The text's own account of what it is and what hearing it does — told through the story of Devarāja and, in the chapters that follow, of Chanchulā and Bind: the frame that opens the Purāṇa. यह भाग बताता है कि यह पुराण क्या है और इसे सुनने से क्या होता है — देवराज, और आगे चंचुला तथा बिन्दुग की कथाओं के माध्यम से।

The Saṃhitā of Vidyeśvara विद्येश्वरसंहिता

The first of the seven Saṃhitās. It opens with the sages' question at Prayāga and Sūta's answer, and turns to the worship of Śiva through the liṅga — the establishing of Śiva as the supreme, the greatness of the liṅga, and the rite of its worship. सात संहिताओं में पहली। प्रयाग में मुनियों के प्रश्न और सूत के उत्तर से आरम्भ होकर यह शिवलिंग के द्वारा शिव की उपासना की ओर मुड़ती है — शिव की परमता की स्थापना, लिंग की महिमा, और उसकी पूजा की विधि।

The first khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Answering the sages' question, Sūta takes up the dialogue of Brahmā and Nārada — how the unqualified Śiva takes on form, and his play through creation, its middle, and its end. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का प्रथम खण्ड। ऋषियों के प्रश्न के उत्तर में सूत ब्रह्मा-नारद संवाद को उठाते हैं — कि कैसे निर्गुण शिव सगुण रूप धारण करते हैं, तथा सृष्टि के आरम्भ, मध्य और अन्त में उनकी लीला।

The second khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Brahmā tells Nārada the account of Satī — told first in brief, then at length: Rudra taking form, Dakṣa's sacrifice and Satī's death there, and her rebirth as Pārvatī. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का द्वितीय खण्ड। ब्रह्मा जी नारद को सती की कथा सुनाते हैं — पहले संक्षेप में, फिर विस्तार से: रुद्र का अवतार, दक्ष का यज्ञ और वहाँ सती का देहत्याग, तथा पार्वती के रूप में उनका पुनर्जन्म।

The third khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Brahmā tells Nārada how Satī, reborn as Pārvatī, again wins Śiva as her husband — opening with the marriage of her parents, Himācala and Menā. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का तृतीय खण्ड। ब्रह्मा जी नारद को बताते हैं कि किस प्रकार सती, पार्वतीके रूपमें पुनर्जन्म लेकर, पुनः शिवको पतिरूपमें प्राप्त करती हैं — आरम्भ उनके माता-पिता हिमाचल और मेनाके विवाहसे होता है।

The Saṃhitā of Rudra · Kumāra Khaṇḍa रुद्रसंहिता — कुमारखण्ड

The fourth khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Brahmā tells Nārada of Śiva's sport with Pārvatī on Kailāsa after their marriage, and of the birth of Kumāra (Skanda) from Śiva's radiance, born to slay the demon Tāraka. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का चतुर्थ खण्ड। ब्रह्मा जी नारद को विवाहके पश्चात् कैलासपर शिव-पार्वतीके विहारकी तथा तारकासुरके वधके लिये शिवके तेजसे कुमार (स्कन्द) के जन्मकी कथा सुनाते हैं।

The Saṃhitā of Rudra · Yuddha Khaṇḍa रुद्रसंहिता — युद्धखण्ड

The fifth khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Nārada, having heard the household story of Śiva through Gaṇeśa and Skanda, asks for the account of Śiva's valour — how the three cities of the Tāraka's sons were burnt with a single arrow, and, in the chapters that follow, the slaying of Jālandhara. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का पंचम खण्ड। गणेश तथा स्कन्दके माध्यमसे शिवजीके गृहस्थ-चरित्रको सुनकर नारदजी शिवजीके पराक्रमकी कथा पूछते हैं — तारकपुत्रोंके तीनों पुरोंको एक ही बाणसे भस्म करनेकी, तथा आगेके अध्यायोंमें जालन्धरके वधकी कथा।

शतरुद्रसंहिता

The Śatarudra Saṃhitā शतरुद्रसंहिता

The third of the seven Saṃhitās. Nandīśvara tells Sanatkumāra of Śiva's many avatāras across the ages, beginning with the five Brahma-forms — Sadyojāta, Vāmadeva, Tatpuruṣa, Aghora and Īśāna — through which Śiva first taught Brahmā the power of creation, and continuing through the god's many further descents for the world's good. सात संहिताओंमें तीसरी। नन्दीश्वर सनत्कुमारको शिवजीके विभिन्न युगोंमें हुए अनेक अवतारोंकी कथा सुनाते हैं, आरम्भ पाँच ब्रह्मरूपों — सद्योजात, वामदेव, तत्पुरुष, अघोर और ईशान — से, जिनके द्वारा शिवने पहले-पहल ब्रह्माको सृष्टिकी शक्ति सिखायी, और आगे भी लोक-कल्याणके लिये भगवान्के अनेक अवतारोंका वर्णन जारी रहता है।

The Koṭirudra Saṃhitā कोटिरुद्रसंहिता

The fourth of the seven Saṃhitās. Sūta tells the sages of the twelve Jyotirliṅgas and the many other liṅgas of Śiva across the land — where each arose, the story of how Śiva came to dwell there, and the merit of seeing and worshipping it. सात संहिताओंमें चौथी। सूतजी ऋषियोंको बारह ज्योतिर्लिङ्गों तथा देशभरमें फैले शिवजीके अन्य अनेक लिङ्गोंकी कथा सुनाते हैं — प्रत्येक कहाँ प्रकट हुआ, शिवजी वहाँ कैसे विराजमान हुए, और उसके दर्शन-पूजनका क्या फल है।

उमासंहिता

The Umā Saṃhitā उमासंहिता

The fifth of the seven Saṃhitās. Sūta retells to the sages what Sanatkumāra told Vyāsa, beginning with Upamanyu's teaching to Kṛṣṇa, on the greatness of Śiva and of the Goddess Umā — of devotion, gifts and their fruits, the fate of souls after death, the shape of the world, and the Goddess's own deeds for the good of the gods. सात संहिताओंमें पाँचवीं। सूतजी ऋषियोंको वह कथा सुनाते हैं जो सनत्कुमारने व्यासजीको कही थी — उपमन्युके श्रीकृष्णको दिये उपदेशसे आरम्भ करके — शिवजी तथा देवी उमाकी महिमा सुनाते हैं — भक्ति, दान और उनके फल, मृत्युके बाद जीवकी गति, लोकोंका स्वरूप, तथा देवताओंके हितके लिये देवीके अपने चरित्र।

कैलाससंहिता

The Kailāsa Saṃhitā कैलाससंहिता

The sixth of the seven Saṃhitās. Sūta tells what Vyāsa taught the sages of Naimiṣa: Śiva explains the praṇava Oṃ to Pārvatī and the way of renunciation; Skanda then teaches Vāmadeva the meaning of the praṇava and the Śaiva doctrine of Śiva, the world and the soul; it closes with the rites after a renunciant's death. सात संहिताओंमें छठी। सूतजी वह उपदेश सुनाते हैं जो व्यासजीने नैमिषारण्यके मुनियोंको दिया — शिवजी पार्वतीको प्रणव ॐ का अर्थ और संन्यासकी विधि बताते हैं; फिर स्कन्द वामदेवको प्रणवका अर्थ तथा शिव, जगत् और जीवके विषयमें शैव सिद्धान्त समझाते हैं; अन्तमें यतिके देहान्तके बादके कृत्योंका वर्णन है।

The first khaṇḍa of the seventh and last Saṃhitā. Sūta tells the sages of Naimiṣa the teaching that Vāyu once gave in the Śveta Kalpa, beginning with the branches of learning and the Purāṇas and ending with the story of Upamanyu. सातवीं और अन्तिम संहिताका पहला खण्ड। सूतजी नैमिषारण्यके मुनियोंको वह उपदेश सुनाते हैं जो वायुदेवने श्वेतकल्पमें दिया था — आरम्भ विद्याओं और पुराणोंके परिचयसे होता है और अन्तमें उपमन्युकी कथा है।

वायवीयसंहिता — उत्तरखण्ड

The Vāyavīya Saṃhitā · Uttara Khaṇḍa वायवीयसंहिता — उत्तरखण्ड

The second khaṇḍa of the seventh and last Saṃhitā, and the close of the Purāṇa. Upamanyu teaches Kṛṣṇa the knowledge of Śiva: his nature and forms, the five-syllable mantra, initiation, daily and occasional worship, the fire rite, rites for this world and the next, the installation of the liṅga, and Śaiva yoga. It ends as the sages of Naimiṣa go to Brahmā and meet Sanatkumāra. सातवीं और अन्तिम संहिताका दूसरा खण्ड, जिसके साथ पुराण पूर्ण होता है। उपमन्यु श्रीकृष्णको शिवज्ञानका उपदेश देते हैं — शिवका स्वरूप, पंचाक्षर मन्त्र, दीक्षा, नित्य-नैमित्तिक पूजा, अग्निकर्म, इस लोक और परलोकके लिये कर्म, लिंग-प्रतिष्ठा और शैव योग। अन्तमें नैमिषारण्यके मुनि ब्रह्माजीके पास जाते हैं और सनत्कुमारसे मिलते हैं।
