The text's own account of what it is and what hearing it does — told through the story of Devarāja and, in the chapters that follow, of Chanchulā and Bind: the frame that opens the Purāṇa. यह भाग बताता है कि यह पुराण क्या है और इसे सुनने से क्या होता है — देवराज, और आगे चंचुला तथा बिन्दुग की कथाओं के माध्यम से।

The first of the seven Saṃhitās. It opens with the sages' question at Prayāga and Sūta's answer, and turns to the worship of Śiva through the liṅga — the establishing of Śiva as the supreme, the greatness of the liṅga, and the rite of its worship. सात संहिताओं में पहली। प्रयाग में मुनियों के प्रश्न और सूत के उत्तर से आरम्भ होकर यह शिवलिंग के द्वारा शिव की उपासना की ओर मुड़ती है — शिव की परमता की स्थापना, लिंग की महिमा, और उसकी पूजा की विधि।

Answering the sages' question, Sūta takes up the dialogue of Brahmā and Nārada — how the unqualified Śiva takes on form, and his play through creation, its middle, and its end. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का प्रथम खण्ड। ऋषियों के प्रश्न के उत्तर में सूत ब्रह्मा-नारद संवाद को उठाते हैं — कि कैसे निर्गुण शिव सगुण रूप धारण करते हैं, तथा सृष्टि के आरम्भ, मध्य और अन्त में उनकी लीला।

The second khaṇḍa of the second Saṃhitā. Brahmā tells Nārada the account of Satī — told first in brief, then at length: Rudra taking form, Dakṣa's sacrifice and Satī's death there, and her rebirth as Pārvatī. सात संहिताओं में दूसरी संहिता का द्वितीय खण्ड। ब्रह्मा जी नारद को सती की कथा सुनाते हैं — पहले संक्षेप में, फिर विस्तार से: रुद्र का अवतार, दक्ष का यज्ञ और वहाँ सती का देहत्याग, तथा पार्वती के रूप में उनका पुनर्जन्म।
