Nārada asks what Bāṇa did after Kṛṣṇa and Aniruddha, with his wife, departed for Dvārakā. Sanatkumāra answers: Bāṇa, recalling his own folly, fell into grief and remorse, his body still smeared with the blood of battle. Śiva's gaṇa Nandī consoles him, urging him not to despair, for Śambhu is compassionate to his devotees and bears the name Bhaktavatsala; whatever has happened has happened by the Lord's will, so Bāṇa should accept it and remember Śiva again and again, fixing his mind on the Primal Lord and holding festival for him daily. Comforted by Nandī's words, Bāṇa, his enmity gone, goes swiftly and with courage to Śiva's abode, bows down, and weeps, overwhelmed with love, his pride vanished. Praising the Lord with many hymns and prostrations, he dances the great tāṇḍava in its manifold stances — the ālīḍha, pratyālīḍha, and others — with thousands of facial gestures, brow-movements, and head-shakings, and drenches the ground with streams of his own blood, until, forgetting himself entirely, the great devotee Bāṇāsura succeeds in propitiating the trident-bearing, moon-crested Rudra. Delighted by this dance, Hara — who loves dance and song and is ever fond of his devotees — speaks to Bāṇa, addressing him as Bali's son, and, pleased with his dancing, bids him choose any boon he desires. Sanatkumāra continues: hearing this, the lord of daityas asks for the healing of his wound, release from the disgrace of the arm-combat, imperishable rank among Śiva's gaṇas, sovereignty for Uṣā's son in the city called Śoṇita, freedom from enmity with the gods and especially with Viṣṇu, an end forever to his wicked demon-nature born of rajas and tamas, unwavering devotion to Śambhu, affection for Śiva's devotees, and compassion for all creatures. Having asked for these boons, Bali's son, his eyes full of tears of love, praises Rudra with folded hands in an extended hymn: he hails him as God of gods, refuge of the humble, ocean of compassion, the Absolute and Supreme Self who pervades everything; whose body is the universe itself — the sky his navel, fire his face, water his seed, the quarters his ears, heaven his head, earth his feet, the moon his mind, the sun his eye, the ocean his belly, Indra his arm, Brahmā his intellect, Prajāpati his generative power, dharma his heart, the herbs his body-hairs, the clouds his hair, the three guṇas his three eyes — the all-Self, the Puruṣa, whose face, arms, thighs, and feet are said to be the origin of the four social orders. He alone is worthy of worship by every being, and one who worships him surely attains supreme liberation, while one who forsakes this beloved Lord for the sake of sense-objects abandons nectar for poison; even Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the gods, and pure-hearted sages have all taken refuge in him. Having spoken thus, Bali's son falls silent and bows down, his limbs blossoming with love. Hearing his devotee's words, the blessed Bhava declares, "You shall obtain everything," and vanishes on the spot. By Śambhu's grace, Bāṇa then attains the rank of Mahākāla, becoming Rudra's own attendant, and rejoices greatly. The chapter closes by noting that this whole account, narrated under the name of Śara (Bāṇa), is in truth the play of Śaṅkara himself, the true guru of all elders, who ever sports in the midst of every world.

Then, by Śambhu's grace, he attained the rank of Mahākāla; Bāṇa, now Rudra's attendant, became greatly rejoiced.

Thus, indeed, has this account of Śaṅkara too, under the name of Śara — the true guru of all elders, the trident-bearer, who ever sports in the midst of every world — been told here, most excellently, in words pleasing to the ear.
