Chapter 57 · The Slaying of Gajāsura · Verses 1–73

Sanatkumāra continues: he tells Vyāsa, with great love, how Śiva slew the dānava lord Gajāsura with his trident. After Mahiṣāsura had been slain in battle by the Goddess for the gods' welfare, his son Gajāsura, remembering that death, went to a Himālayan valley and performed the most terrible austerity, resolved to become unslayable by any man or woman overcome by desire. A fire born of his head scorched the three worlds and shook the earth, until the gods, unable to bear it, fled to Brahmaloka and begged Brahmā to pacify him or the worlds would perish. Brahmā came to the young ascetic, praised his success, and granted the very boon he sought; overjoyed, Gajāsura returned home, then conquered every quarter, subdued the guardians of the worlds, and took up residence in Indra's own heavenly mansion built by Viśvakarmā, ever enjoying pleasures yet, his senses unconquered, never satisfied. In time, drunk on sovereignty and heedless of scripture, he turned to tormenting brāhmaṇas, ascetics, gods, and men, especially the righteous, out of remembered enmity, and at last marched on Śiva's own city, trampling the earth wherever he set his foot, his roar and stride described at length by the frightened gods who fled to Śiva for refuge in his own city and begged him, as its constant protector, to slay the intruder. Śiva came at once, trident in hand; a fierce and wondrous battle broke out, in which Gajāsura wounded Giriśa with sharp arrows before Rudra shredded his arrows in mid-flight and, knowing him unslayable by ordinary means, ran him through with the trident itself. Pierced and dying, Gajāsura, regarding himself as if canopied by the very weapon that killed him, declared himself Śiva's devotee, welcomed death at his hand as the highest good, and begged him to accept his hide, tempered pure by the trident's own fire, unburnt even by the flame of his own long austerity — proof, he said, of its sanctity — asking in return only that Śiva wear it forever and take the name Kṛttivāsa, 'clad in the hide,' from that day. Pleased, Śiva granted both requests: he put on the great hide, and further declared that Gajāsura's own sacred body would become his liṅga on that liberating ground, named Kṛttivāseśvara, destroyer of great sins and foremost among liṅgas, bestowing complete liberation on all who worship there. A great festival broke out among the people and pramathas of Kāśī; Hari, Brahmā, and the other gods, overjoyed, praised the great lord with folded hands; and with the dānava lord slain, the gods returned to their own abodes and the world recovered its peace. Sanatkumāra closes by praising this account of Śiva's tenderness toward his devotees as heaven-bringing, fame-giving, life-lengthening, and wealth-increasing — one who hears or recites it with love and pure observance enjoys great happiness here and attains supreme bliss at the end.
