Sanatkumāra tells Vyāsa the story of how Hara slew the daitya Dundubhinirhrāda, son of Diti. When the mighty Hiraṇyākṣa is killed by Viṣṇu's deceitful allies among the gods, Diti grieves bitterly; her devoted nephew, the daitya Dundubhinirhrāda — Prahlāda's maternal uncle — consoles her, then privately resolves on a scheme to make the gods easy to conquer. Reflecting that the gods live on sacrificial oblations, that sacrifices spring from the Vedas, and that the Vedas rest on brāhmaṇas, he concludes that destroying brāhmaṇas will starve the sacrifices, starve the gods, and leave them weak and easily defeated — after which he alone will rule the three worlds and seize the gods' inexhaustible wealth. Resolving to begin at Vārāṇasī, the great home of learned, austerity-rich brāhmaṇas, before moving on to other holy fords, the deceitful demon slaughters brāhmaṇas gathering fuel and kuśa grass in the forests around Kāśī, devouring them whole without a trace, undetected — by day meditating unseen among the sages as one of their own, by night prowling as a tiger and devouring many more. One Śivarātri night, a lone devotee absorbed in worship and meditation on the God of gods in his hut becomes Dundubhinirhrāda's target; but though the demon in tiger form tries again and again, he cannot approach the devotee, whose mind is fixed firmly on Śiva and fortified by weapon-mantras. Perceiving the demon's intent, all-pervading Hara resolves to slay him: as the tiger moves to seize its prey, the three-eyed guardian of the world appears there in that very form, skilled at protecting devotees. Seeing Rudra approaching in his own form from the worshipped liṅga, the demon swells in his tiger-body to the size of a mountain in defiant contempt of the all-knowing Lord — whereupon Śiva seizes the oncoming beast and crushes it in the vice of his armpit, then, five-faced, strikes the tiger's five-faced head with a fist harder than the thunderbolt, though he loves his devotees still. Under the blow and the crushing grip the tiger roars in extreme agony, filling heaven and earth, and dies; ascetics nearby, their hearts shaken by that great cry, converge in the night toward the sound and, seeing the Lord there with the lion-tiger caught in his armpit, bow and praise Śarva with cries of victory. The brāhmaṇas plead with him to save them from this terrible affliction, to show grace, to remain there as guru of the world, and — under this very form, the name Vyāgheśa — ever to guard that foremost holy place and protect its dwellers from all further calamities, banishing the wicked and granting refuge to devotees. Moon-crested Śiva, hearing his devotees' plea, the one who loves his devotees, agrees and then declares as Maheśvara: whoever beholds him with faith in this very form will have every such affliction destroyed without doubt, and any mortal who, remembering this story and this liṅga in his heart, enters battle will win victory without doubt. Meanwhile the gods, with Indra, arrive amid cries of triumph and great celebration; bowing to Śaṅkara with love, palms folded, heads bent, they praise the one who loves his devotees, hailing him as Śaṅkara, lord of gods, remover of the afflictions of the surrendered, and thanking him for delivering them through Dundubhinirhrāda's death, and asking that he ever protect his devotees and slay the wicked, being lord of all. Hearing the gods' words, the Supreme Lord, pleased, assents and merges into that very liṅga; the astonished gods then return joyfully to their own abodes, and the brāhmaṇas too return, greatly rejoicing, the way they came. Sanatkumāra concludes that whoever hears, causes to be heard, recites, or causes to be recited this supreme story of the origin of Vyāgheśvara obtains all desires of the heart and afterward attains liberation, free of every sorrow; this matchless narrative, nectar-lettered with Śiva's play, brings heaven, fame, long life, and the increase of sons and grandsons — supremely devotion-bestowing, blessed, pleasing to Śiva, auspicious, giver of supreme knowledge, delightful, and supremely destructive of affliction.

Hear, O Vyāsa, I shall tell the deed of the moon-crested one — how Hara slew Dundubhinirhrāda, the son of Diti.

The wicked daitya Dundubhinirhrāda, Prahlāda's maternal uncle — a source of grief to the gods — consoled her with words as she grieved.

Then that deceitful daitya-lord, having comforted Diti, pondered a stratagem: how the gods might be easily conquered.

"What is their strength, what their sustenance, and what indeed the support of these immortals? How might they be easily conquered by me?" — thus he pondered a stratagem.

The daitya, having reflected at length and grasped the truth for certain, [concluded that] the twice-born are inevitably the cause here, upon reflection.

yataḥ kratubhujo devāḥ kratavo vedasambhavāḥ | te vedā brāhmaṇādhārāstato devabalaṃ dvijāḥ ||
Since the gods feed on sacrifices, and sacrifices arise from the Vedas, and those Vedas rest upon the brāhmaṇas — hence the twice-born are the very strength of the gods.
यतः क्रतुभुजो देवाः (yataḥ kratubhujo devāḥ) — since the gods feed on sacrificesक्रतवो वेदसम्भवाः (kratavo vedasambhavāḥ) — and sacrifices arise from the Vedasते वेदा ब्राह्मणाधाराः (te vedā brāhmaṇādhārāḥ) — those Vedas rest upon the brāhmaṇasततो देवबलं द्विजाः (tato devabalaṃ dvijāḥ) — hence the twice-born are the strength of the gods

It is certain: all the Vedas, and Indra with them, rest upon brāhmaṇas — the gods have brāhmaṇas as their strength; no further deliberation is needed here.

If the brāhmaṇas should perish, the Vedas perish of themselves; hence, once they have perished, the gods are forever destroyed.

When the sacrifices come to ruin, the gods, their food cut off, grow weak and easily conquered — and then, once the gods are conquered —

Where are the twice-born found in greatest number, greatly swollen with the splendour of brahman, accomplished in the study of the scriptures, and endowed with the strength of austerity?

The home of the greatest number of brāhmaṇas is indeed Vārāṇasī — having first dealt with that city, I shall then go on to other holy fords.

Wherever, in whatever holy fords, and wherever, in whatever hermitages the twice-born are found — all of them shall be devoured by me, beginning here, on every side.

Thus Dundubhinirhrāda, having formed this resolve fitting his lineage, and having reached Kāśī, the evil-conducted, deceitful one began slaying the twice-born.
