Sanatkumāra continues, at Vyāsa's request, narrating a further deed of Śiva accomplished through Pārvatī. Long ago two mighty daityas, Vidala and Utpala, made proud and unslayable by men through Brahmā's boon, subdued the three worlds and vanquished the gods in battle. The defeated gods sought refuge with Brahmā, who assured them that Pārvatī alone would slay the two, and counselled patience through remembrance of Śiva and Śivā, since the benevolent Lord would soon set things right. Comforted, the gods departed; at Śiva's prompting, Nārada then went to the demons' dwelling and praised Pārvatī's beauty, so that the two, deluded and tormented by desire, longed to carry her off, though uncertain when and where their chance would come. One day, as Śiva sported at ease, Pārvatī played happily at ball with her companions in his presence — her limbs graceful in motion, her garland slipping, her cheeks glistening with sweat, her hands reddened from striking the ball, her brow arching as her eyes followed its flight. The two sky-ranging demons, glimpsing her, were as good as claimed by death already; assuming a demonic illusion and the guise of Śiva's own attendants, they descended and approached the Goddess. But Hara, slayer of the wicked, at once recognized them by the restlessness in their eyes, and by a glance revealed to Durgā that these false attendants were in truth the demons. Understanding her lord's signal, the Goddess struck the two down at once with that very ball; battered and reeling, they fell like a ripe fruit shaken from a palm by the wind, or a mountain peak split by the thunderbolt. Having felled the two great daityas intent on evil, the ball itself was transformed into a liṅga, thereafter known as Kandukeśvara, standing near Jyeṣṭheśvara and warding off every evil. At that moment the gods headed by Viṣṇu and Brahmā, and the sages, learning of Śiva's manifestation, gathered there; having received boons from Śambhu, they and the people of Kāśī departed for their own abodes, first bowing with joined palms and praising Śiva and Ambikā with devoted words. Śiva himself, having sported joyfully with Pārvatī, withdrew with his attendants to his own abode, well pleased. The Kandukeśvara liṅga in Kāśī, Sanatkumāra says, destroys the wicked and ever grants both enjoyment and liberation and every wish of the virtuous; whoever hears, recites, or has this matchless account recited attains no sorrow or fear, but every happiness here and a divine state hereafter, rare even for the gods. Having thus told Vyāsa this wondrous deed showing Śiva and Pārvatī's tenderness toward their devotees, Sanatkumāra — as Brahmā recounts to Nārada — took his leave and returned by the sky-path to Kāśī. Brahmā then declares to Nārada that he has fully related this Yuddha-khaṇḍa within the Raudrī Saṃhitā, granting every desired fruit, and that the whole Raudrī Saṃhitā, most dear to Sadāśiva and bestowing enjoyment and liberation, has now been completely told; whoever recites it constantly wards off the harm of enemies, obtains all desires, and finally attains liberation. Sūta then relates that Nārada, having thus heard from his father Brahmā the supreme glory of Śiva together with his hundred names, became fulfilled and a devoted follower of Śiva; and Sūta, having fully recounted this dialogue between Brahmā and Nārada, observes that Śiva alone is supreme over all, and asks what more remains to be heard.

Hear, O Vyāsa, with great delight, the deed of the Supreme Lord — how, by a sign given to his beloved, he had a demon slain through her.

By those two men, the three worlds were made as light as straw through the strength of their own arms; O Brahman, all the gods were conquered in battle by those two daityas.

Defeated by those two, the gods went for refuge to Brahmā; bowing to him duly, all of them told him their plight with reverence.

Then Brahmā spoke to them thus: "Those two are surely to be slain by the Goddess. Take courage, remembering with reverence Śiva together with Śivā.

Having said this to them, Brahmā then fell silent, remembering Śiva; and those gods too, gladdened, then went each to his own abode.

Then Durgā, destroyer of evil states, was glanced at by the Lord — who is the very self of all — as if to say: "these two disguised as attendants are demons, not true attendants."

Thus having heard from his father the supreme glory of Śiva, and having received Śambhu's hundred names, the son of Brahmā became fulfilled, a follower of Śiva.
NoteThis closing verse names the son of Brahmā without repeating his name; the listener throughout this exchange has consistently been Nārada, so the epithet here refers to him, not to Sanatkumāra, who has been the one narrating within Brahmā's own speech to Nārada.
