This chapter opens the third Saṃhitā, the Śatarudra, with the sages asking Sūta about Śiva's avatāras; Sūta relays what Nandīśvara once told Sanatkumāra. Nandī then recounts, kalpa by kalpa, how Śiva first appeared to Brahmā in five successive forms. In the nineteenth kalpa, Śvetalohita, a white-and-red kumāra — Sadyojāta — arises from Brahmā's meditation, is worshipped, produces four disciple-kumāras (Sunanda and the rest) who fill Brahmaloka, and grants Brahmā both knowledge and the power to create. In the twentieth kalpa, Rakta, a red kumāra — Vāmadeva — appears the same way, fathers four red-clad sons (Viraja and the rest), and again gives Brahmā knowledge and the power to create. In the twenty-first kalpa, Pītavāsā, a yellow-robed kumāra — Tatpuruṣa — appears; Brahmā worships him with the Śiva-Gāyatrī, and many yellow-robed kumāras arise beside him to become the founders of the path of yoga. After a great dissolution and a thousand divine years upon the single cosmic ocean, in the kalpa called Śiva, a dark, blazing kumāra clad entirely in black — Aghora — appears to the grieving Brahmā and is praised; four black sons (Kṛṣṇa and the rest) are then born beside him and teach Brahmā the wondrous Ghora-yoga of creation. Finally, in the kalpa Viśvarūpa, Sarasvatī and then the crystal-bright Lord Īśāna appear; Īśāna instructs Brahmā in the right path and, with his own śakti, brings forth four boys — Jaṭī, Muṇḍī, Śikhaṇḍī and Ardhamuṇḍa — who themselves attain the path of yoga. Nandī then explains that these five — Īśāna, Tatpuruṣa, Aghora, Vāmadeva and Sadyojāta, together called the five 'Brahma' forms of Maheśa — govern the whole universe for the good of the three worlds, each presiding over one sense-faculty and one element of experience: Īśāna over the ear, speech, and ether; Tatpuruṣa over the skin, hand, touch, and air; Aghora over the body, taste, form and fire; Vāmadeva over the tongue, the organ of excretion, the sense of taste, and water; and Sadyojāta over the nose, the generative organ, smell, and earth. The chapter closes by urging every seeker of good to revere these five forms, promising the fulfilment of every desire to whoever reads or hears this account.
