जृम्भिते जृम्भणास्त्रेण (jṛmbhite jṛmbhaṇāstreṇa) — when [Bāṇa] was made to yawn by the Jṛmbhaṇa weaponwhen [Bāṇa] was made to yawn by the Jṛmbhaṇa weapon·हरिणा समरे हरे (hariṇā samare hare) — by Hari in the battle, O remover [of doubt]by Hari in the battle, O remover [of doubt]·हते बाणबले (hate bāṇabale) — when Bāṇa's army was struck downwhen Bāṇa's army was struck down·बाणः किमकार्षीच्च तद्वद (bāṇaḥ kimakārṣīcca tadvada) — what then did Bāṇa do — tell me thatwhat then did Bāṇa do — tell me that

श्रीकृष्णोऽपि महावीरो (śrīkṛṣṇo'pi mahāvīro) — Śrī Kṛṣṇa too, the great heroŚrī Kṛṣṇa too, the great hero·गिरिशाप्तमहाबलः (giriśāptamahābalaḥ) — made mighty by Girīśa's favourmade mighty by Girīśa's favour·उच्चैर्जगर्ज तत्राजौ (uccairjagarja tatrājau) — roared loudly there in the battleroared loudly there in the battle·बाणं मत्वा तृणोपमम् (bāṇaṃ matvā tṛṇopamam) — regarding Bāṇa as a mere blade of grassregarding Bāṇa as a mere blade of grass

चिक्षेप विविधान्बाणान् (cikṣepa vividhānbāṇān) — hurled various arrowshurled various arrows·बाणाय कुपितो हरिः (bāṇāya kupito hariḥ) — at Bāṇa, Hari, enragedat Bāṇa, Hari, enraged·कर्णान्तं तद्विकृष्याथ (karṇāntaṃ tadvikṛṣyātha) — drawing it back to his eardrawing it back to his ear·तीक्ष्णानाशीविषोपमान् (tīkṣṇānāśīviṣopamān) — sharp ones, resembling venomous serpentssharp ones, resembling venomous serpents

स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्भोजं (smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṃ) — remembering Śiva's lotus feetremembering Śiva's lotus feet·चिक्षेप निजसायकान् (cikṣepa nijasāyakān) — hurled his own arrowshurled his own arrows·स कृष्णायातिशूराय (sa kṛṣṇāyātiśūrāya) — at Kṛṣṇa, supremely valiantat Kṛṣṇa, supremely valiant·महागर्वो बलेः सुतः (mahāgarvo baleḥ sutaḥ) — that greatly proud son of Balithat greatly proud son of Bali

कृष्णोऽपि तानसम्प्राप्तान् (kṛṣṇo'pi tānasamprāptān) — Kṛṣṇa too, those [arrows], before they arrivedKṛṣṇa too, those [arrows], before they arrived·अच्छिनत्स्वशरैर्द्रुतम् (acchinatsvaśarairdrutam) — swiftly cut down with his own arrowsswiftly cut down with his own arrows·स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्भोजं (smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṃ) — remembering Śiva's lotus feetremembering Śiva's lotus feet·अमरारिर्महाबलः (amarārirmahābalaḥ) — mighty one, vanquisher of foesmighty one, vanquisher of foes

रामादयो वृष्णयश्च (rāmādayo vṛṣṇayaśca) — Balarāma and the other VṛṣṇisBalarāma and the other Vṛṣṇis·स्वं स्वं योद्धारमाहवे (svaṃ svaṃ yoddhāramāhave) — each his own opponent in the fighteach his own opponent in the fight·निजघ्नुर्बलिनःसर्वे (nijaghnurbalinaḥsarve) — all the mighty ones struck downall the mighty ones struck down·कृत्वा क्रोधं समाकुलाः (kṛtvā krodhaṃ samākulāḥ) — growing furious and agitatedgrowing furious and agitated

इत्थं चिरतरं तत्र (itthaṃ cirataraṃ tatra) — thus, for a very long time therethus, for a very long time there·बलिनोश्च द्वयोरपि (balinośca dvayorapi) — between those two mighty onesbetween those two mighty ones·बभूव तुमुलं युद्धं (babhūva tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ) — a tumultuous battle arosea tumultuous battle arose·श‍ृण्वतां विस्मयावहम् (śa‍ṛṇvatāṃ vismayāvaham) — astonishing to those who heard of itastonishing to those who heard of it

तस्मिन्नवसरे तत्र (tasminnavasare tatra) — at that moment, thereat that moment, there·क्रोधं कृत्वाऽति पक्षिराट् (krodhaṃ kṛtvā'ti pakṣirāṭ) — the king of birds, greatly enragedthe king of birds, greatly enraged·बाणासुरबलं सर्वं (bāṇāsurabalaṃ sarvaṃ) — the entire army of Bāṇāsurathe entire army of Bāṇāsura·पक्षाघातैरमर्दयत् (pakṣāghātairamardayat) — he crushed with blows of his wingshe crushed with blows of his wings

मर्दितं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा (marditaṃ svabalaṃ dṛṣṭvā) — seeing his own army crushedseeing his own army crushed·मर्दयन्तं च तं बली (mardayantaṃ ca taṃ balī) — and that mighty one still crushing itand that mighty one still crushing it·चुकोपाति बलेः पुत्रः (cukopāti baleḥ putraḥ) — the son of Bali grew exceedingly furiousthe son of Bali grew exceedingly furious·शैवराड् दितिजेश्वरः (śaivarāḍ ditijeśvaraḥ) — that lord of daityas, foremost among Śiva's votariesthat lord of daityas, foremost among Śiva's votaries

स्मृत्वा शिवपदाम्भोजं (smṛtvā śivapadāmbhojaṃ) — remembering Śiva's lotus feetremembering Śiva's lotus feet·सहस्रभुजवान्द्रुतम् (sahasrabhujavāndrutam) — he of a thousand arms, swiftlyhe of a thousand arms, swiftly·महत्पराक्रमं चक्रे (mahatparākramaṃ cakre) — displayed great valourdisplayed great valour·वैरिणां दुःसहं स वै (vairiṇāṃ duḥsahaṃ sa vai) — unbearable indeed to his foesunbearable indeed to his foes

चिक्षेप युगपद्बाणान् (cikṣepa yugapadbāṇān) — hurled arrows all at oncehurled arrows all at once·अमितांस्तत्र वीरहा (amitāṃstatra vīrahā) — countless ones there, that slayer of heroescountless ones there, that slayer of heroes·कृष्णादिसर्वयदुषु (kṛṣṇādisarvayaduṣu) — at Kṛṣṇa and all the Yadusat Kṛṣṇa and all the Yadus·गरुडे च पृथक् पृथक् (garuḍe ca pṛthak pṛthak) — and at Garuḍa, each separatelyand at Garuḍa, each separately

जघानैकेन गरुडं (jaghānaikena garuḍaṃ) — with one arrow he struck Garuḍawith one arrow he struck Garuḍa·कृष्णमेकेन पत्त्रिणा (kṛṣṇamekena pattriṇā) — with another feathered shaft, Kṛṣṇawith another feathered shaft, Kṛṣṇa·बलमेकेन च मुने (balamekena ca mune) — and with another, Balarāma, O sageand with another, Balarāma, O sage·परानपि तथा बली (parānapi tathā balī) — and likewise the mighty one struck the others tooand likewise the mighty one struck the others too

ततः कृष्णो महावीर्यो (tataḥ kṛṣṇo mahāvīryo) — then Kṛṣṇa, of great valourthen Kṛṣṇa, of great valour·विष्णुरूपः सुरारिहा (viṣṇurūpaḥ surārihā) — of the form of Viṣṇu, slayer of the gods' foesof the form of Viṣṇu, slayer of the gods' foes·चुकोपातिरणे तस्मिन् (cukopātiraṇe tasmin) — grew exceedingly angry in that battlegrew exceedingly angry in that battle·जगर्ज च महेश्वरः (jagarja ca maheśvaraḥ) — and the great lord roaredand the great lord roared

जघान बाणं तरसा (jaghāna bāṇaṃ tarasā) — swiftly struck Bāṇaswiftly struck Bāṇa·शार्ङ्गनिःसृतसच्छरैः (śārṅganiḥsṛtasaccharaiḥ) — with true arrows loosed from Śārṅgawith true arrows loosed from Śārṅga·अति तद्बलमत्युग्रं (ati tadbalamatyugraṃ) — and that exceedingly fierce army tooand that exceedingly fierce army too·युगपत्स्मृतशङ्करः (yugapatsmṛtaśaṅkaraḥ) — all at once, remembering Śaṅkaraall at once, remembering Śaṅkara

चिच्छेद तद्धनुः शीघ्रं (ciccheda taddhanuḥ śīghraṃ) — swiftly cut that bowswiftly cut that bow·छत्रादिकमनाकुलः (chatrādikamanākulaḥ) — and the parasol and other [insignia], undisturbedand the parasol and other [insignia], undisturbed·हयांश्च पातयामास (hayāṃśca pātayāmāsa) — and felled the horsesand felled the horses·हत्वा तान्स्वशरैर्हरिः (hatvā tānsvaśarairhariḥ) — Hari, having slain them with his own arrowsHari, having slain them with his own arrows

बाणोऽपि च महावीरो (bāṇo'pi ca mahāvīro) — Bāṇa too, the great heroBāṇa too, the great hero·जगर्जाति प्रकुप्य ह (jagarjāti prakupya ha) — roared, greatly enragedroared, greatly enraged·कृष्णं जघान गदया (kṛṣṇaṃ jaghāna gadayā) — struck Kṛṣṇa with a macestruck Kṛṣṇa with a mace·सोऽपतद्धरणीतले (so'pataddharaṇītale) — he fell to the groundhe fell to the ground

उत्थायारं ततः कृष्णो (utthāyāraṃ tataḥ kṛṣṇo) — then Kṛṣṇa, rising up at oncethen Kṛṣṇa, rising up at once·युयुधे तेन शत्रुणा (yuyudhe tena śatruṇā) — fought with that foefought with that foe·शिवभक्तेन देवर्षे (śivabhaktena devarṣe) — who was a devotee of Śiva, O divine sagewho was a devotee of Śiva, O divine sage·लोकलीलाऽनुसारतः (lokalīlā'nusārataḥ) — in accordance with the sport proper to their worldly formsin accordance with the sport proper to their worldly forms

एवं द्वयोश्चिरं कालं (evaṃ dvayościraṃ kālaṃ) — thus, for a long time, between the twothus, for a long time, between the two·बभूव सुमहान् रणः (babhūva sumahān raṇaḥ) — a very great battle went ona very great battle went on·शिवरूपो हरिः कृष्णः (śivarūpo hariḥ kṛṣṇaḥ) — Hari, Kṛṣṇa, of the form of ŚivaHari, Kṛṣṇa, of the form of Śiva·स च शैवोत्तमो बली (sa ca śaivottamo balī) — and that mighty one, foremost among Śiva's devoteesand that mighty one, foremost among Śiva's devotees

कृष्णोऽथ कृत्वा समरं (kṛṣṇo'tha kṛtvā samaraṃ) — then Kṛṣṇa, having fought battlethen Kṛṣṇa, having fought battle·चिरं बाणेन वीर्यवान् (ciraṃ bāṇena vīryavān) — long with Bāṇa, the valorous onelong with Bāṇa, the valorous one·शिवाऽऽज्ञया प्राप्तबलः (śivā''jñayā prāptabalaḥ) — his strength gained by Śiva's commandhis strength gained by Śiva's command·चुकोपाति मुनीश्वर (cukopāti munīśvara) — grew exceedingly enraged, O lord of sagesgrew exceedingly enraged, O lord of sages

ततःसुदर्शनेनाशु (tataḥsudarśanenāśu) — then at once, with the Sudarśanathen at once, with the Sudarśana·कृष्णो बाणभुजान्बहून् (kṛṣṇo bāṇabhujānbahūn) — Kṛṣṇa, Bāṇa's many armsKṛṣṇa, Bāṇa's many arms·चिच्छेद भगवान् शम्भुः (ciccheda bhagavān śambhuḥ) — cut off — the Lord Śambhucut off — the Lord Śambhu·शासनात्परवीरहा (śāsanātparavīrahā) — by whose command, as slayer of the foe's heroesby whose command, as slayer of the foe's heroes

अवशिष्टा भुजास्तस्य (avaśiṣṭā bhujāstasya) — his remaining armshis remaining arms·चत्वारोऽतीव सुन्दराः (catvāro'tīva sundarāḥ) — four, exceedingly beautifulfour, exceedingly beautiful·गतव्यथो बभूवाशु (gatavyatho babhūvāśu) — he at once became free of painhe at once became free of pain·शङ्करस्य प्रसादतः (śaṅkarasya prasādataḥ) — by Śaṅkara's graceby Śaṅkara's grace

गतस्मृतिर्यदा बाणः (gatasmṛtiryadā bāṇaḥ) — when Bāṇa, who had lost consciousnesswhen Bāṇa, who had lost consciousness·शिरश्छेत्तुं समुद्यतः (śiraśchettuṃ samudyataḥ) — [Kṛṣṇa] prepared to sever [his] head[Kṛṣṇa] prepared to sever [his] head·कृष्णो वीरत्वमापन्नः (kṛṣṇo vīratvamāpannaḥ) — Kṛṣṇa, having attained his heroic natureKṛṣṇa, having attained his heroic nature·तदा रुद्रः समुत्थितः (tadā rudraḥ samutthitaḥ) — then Rudra rose upthen Rudra rose up

भगवन्देवकीपुत्र (bhagavandevakīputra) — O lord, son of DevakīO lord, son of Devakī·यदाज्ञप्तं मया पुरा (yadājñaptaṃ mayā purā) — what was formerly commanded by mewhat was formerly commanded by me·तत्कृतं च त्वया विष्णो (tatkṛtaṃ ca tvayā viṣṇo) — that has been done by you, O Viṣṇuthat has been done by you, O Viṣṇu·मदाज्ञाकारिणा सदा (madājñākāriṇā sadā) — you who are ever obedient to my commandyou who are ever obedient to my command

मा बाणस्य शिरश्छिन्धि (mā bāṇasya śiraśchindhi) — do not sever Bāṇa's headdo not sever Bāṇa's head·संहरस्व सुदर्शनम् (saṃharasva sudarśanam) — withdraw the Sudarśanawithdraw the Sudarśana·मदाज्ञया चक्रमिमम् (madājñayā cakramimam) — this discus, by my commandthis discus, by my command·अमोघं मज्जने सदा (amoghaṃ majjane sadā) — unfailing, ever [subject to recall] at its releaseunfailing, ever [subject to recall] at its release

दत्तं मया पुरा तुभ्यम् (dattaṃ mayā purā tubhyam) — given by me formerly to yougiven by me formerly to you·अनिवार्यं रणे तव (anivāryaṃ raṇe tava) — irresistible in battle, yoursirresistible in battle, yours·चक्रं जयं च गोविन्द (cakraṃ jayaṃ ca govinda) — the discus and victory, O Govindathe discus and victory, O Govinda·निवर्तस्व रणात्ततः (nivartasva raṇāttataḥ) — therefore withdraw from the battletherefore withdraw from the battle

दधीचे रावणे वीरे (dadhīce rāvaṇe vīre) — against Dadhīci, against the hero Rāvaṇaagainst Dadhīci, against the hero Rāvaṇa·तारकादिपुरेष्वपि (tārakādipureṣvapi) — and even against Tāraka and the [triple] citiesand even against Tāraka and the [triple] cities·विना मदाज्ञां लक्ष्मीश (vinā madājñāṃ lakṣmīśa) — without my command, O lord of Lakṣmīwithout my command, O lord of Lakṣmī·रथाङ्गं नामुचः पुरा (rathāṅgaṃ nāmucaḥ purā) — the discus was never before releasedthe discus was never before released

त्वं तु योगीश्वरः साक्षात् (tvaṃ tu yogīśvaraḥ sākṣāt) — you indeed are the very lord of yogīsyou indeed are the very lord of yogīs·परमात्मा जनार्दन (paramātmā janārdana) — the Supreme Self, O Janārdanathe Supreme Self, O Janārdana·विचार्यतां स्वमनसा (vicāryatāṃ svamanasā) — let it be considered in your own mindlet it be considered in your own mind·सर्वभूतहिते रतः (sarvabhūtahite rataḥ) — you who are devoted to the welfare of all beingsyou who are devoted to the welfare of all beings

वरमस्य मया दत्तं (varamasya mayā dattaṃ) — a boon has been given by me to hima boon has been given by me to him·न मृत्युर्भयमस्ति वै (na mṛtyurbhayamasti vai) — there is indeed no fear of deaththere is indeed no fear of death·तन्मे वचः सदा सत्यं (tanme vacaḥ sadā satyaṃ) — that word of mine is ever truethat word of mine is ever true·परितुष्टोऽस्म्यहं तव (parituṣṭo'smyahaṃ tava) — I am well pleased with youI am well pleased with you

पुराऽयं गर्वितो मत्तो (purā'yaṃ garvito matto) — formerly this one, proud and intoxicatedformerly this one, proud and intoxicated·युद्धं देहीति मेऽब्रवीत् (yuddhaṃ dehīti me'bravīt) — said to me, give me battlesaid to me, give me battle·भुजान्कण्डूयमानस्तु (bhujānkaṇḍūyamānastu) — scratching his arms [in eagerness]scratching his arms [in eagerness]·विस्मृतात्मगतिर्हरे (vismṛtātmagatirhare) — forgetful of his own true state, O Hariforgetful of his own true state, O Hari

तदाहमशपं तं वै (tadāhamaśapaṃ taṃ vai) — then I indeed cursed himthen I indeed cursed him·भुजच्छेत्ताऽऽगमिष्यति (bhujacchettā''gamiṣyati) — one who will cut off your arms shall comeone who will cut off your arms shall come·अचिरेणातिकालेन (acireṇātikālena) — before very longbefore very long·गतगर्वो भविष्यसि (gatagarvo bhaviṣyasi) — you shall become one whose pride is destroyedyou shall become one whose pride is destroyed

मदाज्ञया हरिः प्राप्तो (madājñayā hariḥ prāpto) — by my command Hari has comeby my command Hari has come·भुजच्छेत्ता तवाऽथ वै (bhujacchettā tavā'tha vai) — indeed the cutter of your armsindeed the cutter of your arms·निवर्तस्व रणाद्गच्छ (nivartasva raṇādgaccha) — withdraw from the battle, gowithdraw from the battle, go·स्वगृहं सवधूवरः (svagṛhaṃ savadhūvaraḥ) — to your own home, with your daughter and her bridegroomto your own home, with your daughter and her bridegroom

इत्युक्तः स तयोर्मैत्रीं (ityuktaḥ sa tayormaitrīṃ) — having spoken thus, [and] friendship between the twohaving spoken thus, [and] friendship between the two·कारयित्वा महेश्वरः (kārayitvā maheśvaraḥ) — the Great Lord having brought aboutthe Great Lord having brought about·तमनुज्ञाप्य सगणः (tamanujñāpya sagaṇaḥ) — having taken leave of him, together with his hostshaving taken leave of him, together with his hosts·सपुत्रः स्वालयं ययौ (saputraḥ svālayaṃ yayau) — together with his son, went to his own abodetogether with his son, went to his own abode
