Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra: when Hari made Bāṇa yawn with the Jṛmbhaṇa weapon in battle and struck down his army, what did Bāṇa do then? Sūta says the son of Brahmā, glad at heart, replied. Sanatkumāra continues: while Rudra lay at play with his son and hosts, Bāṇa, lord of the daityas, went out to fight Kṛṣṇa. With Kumbhāṇḍa managing his horses and bearing many weapons, the mighty son of Bali waged an incomparable battle; seeing his own army destroyed, he fought on in fury. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, made mighty by Śiva's favour, roared and regarded Bāṇa as a mere blade of grass, twanging his wondrous bow Śārṅga until the sound filled the space between heaven and earth. He loosed serpent-like arrows at Bāṇa, who cut them down before they landed; Bāṇa roared again and the Vṛṣṇis trembled. Remembering Śiva's feet, Bāṇa loosed his own arrows at Kṛṣṇa, and Kṛṣṇa, likewise remembering Śiva, cut them down in turn. Balarāma and the other Vṛṣṇis each engaged their own opponents, and a tumultuous battle raged for a long time. Garuḍa then crushed Bāṇa's army with his wings; seeing this, Bāṇa, foremost among Śiva's devotees, grew enraged and, remembering Śiva once more, unleashed a thousand-armed display of valour unbearable to his foes, loosing countless arrows at once against Kṛṣṇa, the Yadus, and Garuḍa, wounding Garuḍa, Kṛṣṇa, and Balarāma each with a single shaft. Kṛṣṇa, in the form of Viṣṇu, slayer of the gods' foes, grew furious and roared like Maheśvara, and, remembering Śaṅkara, struck Bāṇa and his fierce army at once with true arrows from Śārṅga, cutting his bow and parasol and felling his horses. Bāṇa struck Kṛṣṇa down with a mace, but Kṛṣṇa rose at once and fought on with that devotee of Śiva, as their worldly sport required; a very great battle continued a long while between the two. At last, his strength granted by Śiva's own command, Kṛṣṇa grew exceedingly angry and, with the Sudarśana, by the command of Lord Śambhu, cut off Bāṇa's many arms, leaving him four exceedingly beautiful ones and, by Śaṅkara's grace, free from pain. When the now-unconscious Bāṇa's head was about to be severed by Kṛṣṇa in his full heroic fury, Rudra himself rose up and told Viṣṇu that all this had been done at his own bidding; he bade him withdraw the unfailing Sudarśana, recalling that the discus and victory had been given to Kṛṣṇa by him alone, never before loosed without his command even against Dadhīci, Rāvaṇa, or Tāraka and the triple cities. Rudra reminded Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Self and lord of yogīs devoted to all beings' welfare, that he himself had granted Bāṇa the boon of freedom from fear of death, and that he was pleased with Kṛṣṇa; he recalled how Bāṇa, once proud and forgetful of his true nature, had demanded battle, and how he had then cursed him that his arms would be cut and his pride destroyed before long — a curse now fulfilled by Kṛṣṇa at his command. He bade Bāṇa withdraw from battle and go home with his daughter and her bridegroom. Having thus brought about friendship between Kṛṣṇa and Bāṇa and taken leave of him, Maheśvara returned with his hosts and son to his own abode. Hearing Śambhu's words and withdrawing the Sudarśana, the victorious, unharmed Kṛṣṇa entered the inner apartments, comforted Aniruddha now reunited with his wife, and took the abundant jewels Bāṇa had given. Taking with him Uṣā's friend, the yoginī Citralekhā, Kṛṣṇa, his task accomplished by Śiva's command, rejoiced; bowing in his heart to Giriśa and taking leave of Bali's son, Hari set out with his retinue for his own city, overcame Varuṇa's opposition on the way, and reached Dvārakā amid great festivity. There, having dismissed Garuḍa and smiled upon his friends, he moved about at his own free will.

Doubtful readingThis verse is numbered 3 here to keep the sequence begun by the two preceding verses and continued by the reply that follows, numbered 4; its own printed numeral duplicated the one carried by a later verse, evidently a mix-up between two similarly shaped digits.

Hearing these words of Vyāsa, of measureless splendour, the son of Brahmā, lord of sages, glad at heart, replied.

Doubtful readingThe closing line of this verse repeats the closing line of the one before it word for word, as the transmitted text presents it — a deliberate refrain rather than a copying slip.
