Chapter 54·The Battle among Bāṇāsura, Rudra, and Kṛṣṇa·Verses 1–63
Vyāsa asks: O best of sages, when Kṛṣṇa's grandson Aniruddha had been carried off by Kumbhāṇḍa's daughter, what did Kṛṣṇa do? Sanatkumāra continues: hearing the women's weeping after Aniruddha's disappearance, Kṛṣṇa was distressed, and four rainy-season months passed while he and Aniruddha's kinsmen grieved, not seeing him. When Nārada brought word of Aniruddha's captivity, all the Vṛṣṇis, devoted to Kṛṣṇa, grew greatly distressed. Kṛṣṇa, hearing the whole account, summoned Garuḍa and set out at once for Śoṇitapura, accompanied by Pradyumna, Yuyudhāna, Sāmba, Sāraṇa, Nanda, Upananda, Bhadra, and other followers of Rāma and Kṛṣṇa. With twelve akṣauhiṇīs the foremost Yādavas besieged Bāṇa's city on every side; seeing his gardens, ramparts, watchtowers and gates being demolished, Bāṇa marched out in fury with an equal force. Rudra himself, with his son and surrounded by the Pramathas, mounted his bull Nandi and came to Bāṇa's defence, and a tremendous, hair-raising battle broke out between Kṛṣṇa's side and Bāṇa's guardians. Kṛṣṇa fought Śaṅkara, Pradyumna fought Guha, and Bala fought Kūṣmāṇḍa and Kūpakarṇa together; Sāmba fought Bāṇa's son, Sātyaki fought Bāṇa, Garuḍa fought Nandi, and countless others clashed with others, while Brahmā and the other gods, sages, siddhas, cāraṇas, gandharvas and apsarases came in their vehicles to watch. A most terrible battle also raged against the Pramathas of every form, down to Revatī; Kṛṣṇa, joined by Rāma and the wise Pradyumna, fought an unmatched battle against them, while elsewhere combat broke out with Agni, Yama, Varuṇa, Vimukha, Tripāda, Jvara, and Guha. Amid many terrifying apparitions, hollow-eyed hags, and fierce, shameless women harrying at every step, Kṛṣṇa routed Śaṅkara's bhūtas, pramathas, and guhyakas with sharp arrows from his Śārṅga bow, and the war-loving heroes led by Pradyumna destroyed the enemy host. Seeing his own army being shattered, Rudra grew furious and roared terribly; his hosts, hearing it and strengthened by his power, fought on, crushing their opponents. Kṛṣṇa loosed a volley of weapons from his Śārṅga bow at the wielder of the Pināka, but the unshaken Śiva countered each in turn — Brahmāstra with Brahmāstra, Vāyavyāstra with the mountain-weapon, and Nārāyaṇa's own Āgneyāstra with Parjanya's weapon — until Kṛṣṇa's army, overpowered, fled and could not hold before the fullness of Rudra's splendour. As his own troops routed, Kṛṣṇa released his fever named Śītala, born of Varuṇa; burning the ten directions, it advanced on Rudra, who released his own fever in answer, and the Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava fevers fought each other. Overpowered, the Vaiṣṇava fever cried out and, finding refuge nowhere else, praised the bull-bannered Śiva; pleased at this praise, Hara, ever kind to those who take refuge in him, addressed Viṣṇu's Śīta-fever: he was pleased, and declared that whoever remembered this exchange between them would never fear fever. Thus addressed, Nārāyaṇa's fever bowed to Rudra and departed, and Kṛṣṇa, witnessing it, was filled with astonishment and awe. Meanwhile Skanda, harried and enraged by Pradyumna's arrows, struck Pradyumna down with his spear; wounded and bleeding though mighty, Pradyumna withdrew from the field. Struck by many weapons at the hands of Kumbhāṇḍa and Kūpakarṇa, even mighty Balabhadra could not hold his ground and fled. Garuḍa, assuming a thousand bodies and drinking up the ocean's water, destroyed the foe with torrents like cloud and sea, until Śiva's own mighty bull-mount, enraged, gored him fiercely with its horns; his body torn, Garuḍa, astonished, fled the field, abandoning Janārdana. Witnessing all this, Kṛṣṇa, the son of Devakī, utterly astonished at Śiva's splendour, ordered his charioteer Dāruka to drive him swiftly to Mahādeva's presence. There Kṛṣṇa, bowing with joined palms, devotedly addressed Śaṅkara, kind to his devotees, with a hymn of praise: he saluted him as god of gods, of boundless power, the self of all, the supreme lord — the cause of the universe's origin, continuance and dissolution, pure consciousness, the mark of Brahman, tranquil and absolute; as time, fate, action, the living soul, nature, matter, the field, the breath, the self, and their transformation together; declaring that this ceaseless stream of seed and sprout is Śiva's own māyā, in which he takes refuge; praising him as the one who, through his own manifold, playful forms, sustains the gods and by his very nature destroys those who stray; as Brahman itself, the supreme light hidden within the Veda, whom the pure-souled behold alone, like space; as the primeval, undivided Person, the fourth state, seer of the self, appearing at once as lord, as cause, as uncaused, and as subject to change; as the one who, by his own māyā, is at once joined with all things and distinct from all of them; as the sun that, veiling the forms of shadow, still shines by its own light; as the one who, veiled by quality, is untouched by the qualities within it, self-luminous. He described how minds deluded by that māyā, clinging to son, wife, and house, rise and sink in the ocean of sin, and how one who wins this human birth yet fails to honour Śiva's feet is a pitiable self-deceiver. Finally Kṛṣṇa explained his purpose: by Śiva's own command he had come to sever Bāṇa's arms, since Śiva himself, the destroyer of pride, had cursed the now-proud Bāṇa; he asked Śiva to withdraw from the battle, lest the curse go in vain, and to grant leave for the deed. Śambhu, pleased by this praise, replied: what Kṛṣṇa said was true, he had indeed cursed the daitya king and sent Kṛṣṇa by his own command, yet, ever subject to his devotees, he could not bear to witness the cutting of Bāṇa's arms with his own eyes; therefore he asked Kṛṣṇa to make him yawn with the Jṛmbhaṇa weapon, and then to do as he wished and be at peace. Astonished at this, Kṛṣṇa returned to his post rejoicing, and quickly set the Jṛmbhaṇa weapon on his bow and loosed it at the wielder of the Pināka; having thus bewildered Giriśa, made to yawn by that weapon, Śauri fell upon Bāṇa's army and slew it with sword, mace, and spear.
