Chapter 53·Aniruddha and Uṣā's Sport, within Uṣā's Story·Verses 1–54
Sanatkumāra continues: Enraged, Bāṇāsura goes there and sees him — one of divine, captivating form, standing in the first bloom of youth. Astonished and seized by anger, Bāṇa, as if laughing, demands to know who this bold and courageous man is: this ill-fated fool whose hour has come, who has defiled his family's honor and his beloved daughter. He orders his enraged followers to kill him at once with terrible weapons, and to bind the wicked man and guard him in a dreadful prison for a long time. Yet, unable to place him, the highly intelligent Bāṇa grows uncertain. He slowly musters ten thousand troops for the hero's slaying; those soldiers, exceedingly fierce, surround the inner apartments on every side crying "cut, pierce!" Seeing the enemy host, the roaring Yādava seizes an incomparable iron bar at the gate, comes forth like Death himself with a thunderbolt in hand, slays the attackers, and returns within — destroying ten thousand troops, his eyes red with fury, strengthened by Śiva's power. When a hundred thousand warriors have fallen, Bāṇa, taking Kumbhāṇḍa with him, challenges Aniruddha — Pradyumna's son, protected by Śiva's power, his body ablaze — to single combat. Aniruddha destroys ten thousand of the finest horses and chariots with a sword won in battle, then takes up a spear like the fire of doomsday and strikes Bāṇa down; struck firmly on his chariot-seat, Bāṇa vanishes at once with his horses. Aniruddha, unconquered, stands still like a mountain, scanning every quarter — but the now-invisible, treacherous Bāṇa strikes him again and again with thousands of weapons, and by trickery binds him with serpent-nooses. Having caged him, Bāṇa orders the mighty Sūtaputra to cut off the captive's head at once, dismember him for the rākṣasas and flesh-eating demons to devour, and cast the sinner into a grass-choked, bottomless well — he must be killed regardless. But the righteous-minded Kumbhāṇḍa, an excellent counselor, urges reconsideration: to kill this one, he says, would be to kill their own selves, for he is Viṣṇu's equal in valor, nurtured and made bold by Śiva's own favor and companionship in war — by Śiva's grace, Kriṣṇa's grandson, of such strength that he counts them as mere straws even when bitten by serpents. Kumbhāṇḍa then questions Aniruddha, asking his lineage and urging him to beg for release with folded hands and a confession of defeat, or else face continued bondage. Aniruddha answers with scorn, calling him a hireling and unworthy night-wanderer ignorant of an enemy's due conduct: cowardice and flight are worse than a hero's death, and for a kṣatriya facing the enemy in battle is always the better end, not begging on the ground like a wretch. Hearing many such heroic words, Bāṇa grows both astonished and angry — whereupon a voice from the sky speaks, in the hearing of all the warriors and Aniruddha's counselor, to calm him: Bāṇa, son of Bali and devotee of Śiva, should not give way to wrath, for Śiva alone is lord of all, witness of every deed, creator-sustainer-destroyer of the world embodying Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Hara, the indwelling and transcendent ruler of māyā who is yet without attributes; by his will alone the weak become strong and the strong weak, and the Lord who loves his devotees and delights in many forms of play will himself soon humble Bāṇa's pride. Persuaded, Bāṇa does not slay Aniruddha, but withdraws to his own apartments, drinks deeply, and — his judgment now astray — forgets the warning and returns to his pleasures. Aniruddha, still bound by the venomous serpent-coils and pining for his beloved, calls upon Durgā for refuge and protection, addressing her as the fierce, all-protecting goddess, cause of creation, preservation, and dissolution, the sole refuge besides whom he has none. Pleased, Kālī — dark as shattered collyrium — arrives at the deep midnight of the dark fourteenth of Jyeṣṭha, shatters the cage with heavy blows of her fists, reduces the fearsome serpent-bonds to ashes, frees Aniruddha, leads him into the inner apartments, and vanishes. Thus, by the goddess's grace — that is, by Śiva's own power — Aniruddha is freed from distress and made whole. Having won this victory through Śiva's power, Pradyumna's son at last obtains his beloved, Bāṇa's daughter, and rejoices; as before, flushed with wine and glad of heart, he resumes his happy sport with her.
