पुरा बाणासुरो नाम (purā bāṇāsuro nāma) — long ago, a demon named Bāṇalong ago, a demon named Bāṇa·दैवदोषाच्च गर्वितः (daivadoṣācca garvitaḥ) — made arrogant by the working of fatemade arrogant by the working of fate·कृत्वा ताण्डवनृत्यं च (kṛtvā tāṇḍavanṛtyaṃ ca) — having performed the tāṇḍava dancehaving performed the tāṇḍava dance·तोषयामास शङ्करम् (toṣayāmāsa śaṅkaram) — pleased Śaṅkarapleased Śaṅkara

युद्धस्यागमनं ब्रूहि (yuddhasyāgamanaṃ brūhi) — tell me the coming of wartell me the coming of war·यत्रैते बाहवो मम (yatraite bāhavo mama) — whereby these arms of minewhereby these arms of mine·शत्रुहस्तप्रयुक्तैश्च (śatruhastaprayuktaiśca) — by weapons wielded in the enemy's handby weapons wielded in the enemy's hand·शस्त्रास्त्रैर्जर्जरीकृताः (śastrāstrairjarjarīkṛtāḥ) — shall be mangledshall be mangled

निधाय घोरं सङ्ग्रामं (nidhāya ghoraṃ saṅgrāmaṃ) — having set this dreadful battlehaving set this dreadful battle·गच्छेथाः सर्वसैन्यवान् (gacchethāḥ sarvasainyavān) — go, with all your armygo, with all your army·साम्प्रतं गच्छ तद्वेश्म (sāmprataṃ gaccha tadveśma) — go now to that abodego now to that abode·यतस्तद्विद्यते शिवः (yatastadvidyate śivaḥ) — where Śiva dwellswhere Śiva dwells

तथा तान्स्वमहोत्पातान् (tathā tānsvamahotpātān) — your own great calamitiesyour own great calamities·तत्र द्रष्टासि दुर्मते (tatra draṣṭāsi durmate) — you shall witness there, O evil-minded oneyou shall witness there, O evil-minded one·इत्युक्त्वा विररामाथ (ityuktvā virarāmātha) — having said this, he fell silenthaving said this, he fell silent·गर्वहृद्भक्तवत्सलः (garvahṛdbhaktavatsalaḥ) — the devotee-loving one who took his pridethe devotee-loving one who took his pride

कुम्भाण्डाय यथावृत्तं (kumbhāṇḍāya yathāvṛttaṃ) — to Kumbhāṇḍa, all that had happenedto Kumbhāṇḍa, all that had happened·पृष्टः प्रोवाच हर्षितः (pṛṣṭaḥ provāca harṣitaḥ) — questioned, he told it, rejoicingquestioned, he told it, rejoicing·पर्यैक्षिष्टासुरो बाणः (paryaikṣiṣṭāsuro bāṇaḥ) — the demon Bāṇa kept watchingthe demon Bāṇa kept watching·तं योगं ह्युत्सुकः सदा (taṃ yogaṃ hyutsukaḥ sadā) — for that occurrence, ever eagerfor that occurrence, ever eager

ककुभां मङ्गलं सर्वं (kakubhāṃ maṅgalaṃ sarvaṃ) — every auspicious sign of the quartersevery auspicious sign of the quarters·सम्प्रेक्ष्य प्रस्थितोऽभवत् (samprekṣya prasthito'bhavat) — having observed, he set forthhaving observed, he set forth·महोत्साहो महावीरो (mahotsāho mahāvīro) — of great ardour, the great heroof great ardour, the great hero·बलिपुत्रो महारथः (baliputro mahārathaḥ) — the son of Bali, the great charioteerthe son of Bali, the great charioteer

इति हृत्कमले कृत्वा (iti hṛtkamale kṛtvā) — thinking thus in his heart-lotusthinking thus in his heart-lotus·कः कस्मादागमिष्यति (kaḥ kasmādāgamiṣyati) — who will come, and from wherewho will come, and from where·योद्धा रणप्रियो यस्तु (yoddhā raṇapriyo yastu) — a warrior fond of battlea warrior fond of battle·नानाशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः (nānāśastrāstrapāragaḥ) — versed in many weapons and missilesversed in many weapons and missiles

यस्तु बाहुसहस्रं मे (yastu bāhusahasraṃ me) — who indeed my thousand armswho indeed my thousand arms·छिनत्त्वनलकाष्ठवत् (chinattvanalakāṣṭhavat) — will cut, like sticks in firewill cut, like sticks in fire·तथा शस्त्रैर्महातीक्ष्णैः (tathā śastrairmahātīkṣṇaiḥ) — even as, with most-sharp weaponseven as, with most-sharp weapons·च्छिनद्मि शतशस्त्विह (cchinadmi śataśastviha) — I here cut down hundredsI here cut down hundreds

मृदिता सा तदोत्थाय (mṛditā sā tadotthāya) — bruised, she then rose upbruised, she then rose up·रुदन्ती विविधा गिरः (rudantī vividhā giraḥ) — weeping, uttering various criesweeping, uttering various cries·सखीभ्यः कथयित्वा तु (sakhībhyaḥ kathayitvā tu) — having told her companionshaving told her companions·देहत्यागे कृतक्षणा (dehatyāge kṛtakṣaṇā) — resolved on giving up her bodyresolved on giving up her body

सखि यद्येष मे भर्ता (sakhi yadyeṣa me bhartā) — friend, if this is the husbandfriend, if this is the husband·पार्वत्या विहितः पुरा (pārvatyā vihitaḥ purā) — ordained for me by Pārvatī of oldordained for me by Pārvatī of old·केनोपायेन ते गुप्तः (kenopāyena te guptaḥ) — by what means, that hidden oneby what means, that hidden one·प्राप्यते विधिवन्मया (prāpyate vidhivanmayā) — may be duly obtained by memay be duly obtained by me

व्यसनं तेऽपकर्षामि (vyasanaṃ te'pakarṣāmi) — I shall draw away your distressI shall draw away your distress·त्रिलोक्यां यदि भाव्यते (trilokyāṃ yadi bhāvyate) — if it can be brought about in the three worldsif it can be brought about in the three worlds·समानेष्ये नरं यस्ते (samāneṣye naraṃ yaste) — I shall bring near the man who is yoursI shall bring near the man who is yours·मनोहर्ता तमादिश (manohartā tamādiśa) — the heart-stealer — point him outthe heart-stealer — point him out
