Vyāsa tells Sanatkumāra that, through his grace, he has already been made to hear in brief a wondrous, grace-filled account, and now wishes to hear at length how the moon-crested Śiva, out of love, granted the rank of gaṇa-lord to Bāṇāsura, along with the fitting story of Kṛṣṇa's later battle over Bāṇa. Sanatkumāra takes up the tale from the beginning of creation: from Brahmā's mind-born son Marīci came the great sage Kaśyapa, who married the thirteen daughters of Dakṣa; from the eldest, Diti, were born the daityas. Diti's sons were Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa; from Hiraṇyakaśipu came Hrāda, Anuhrāda, Saṃhrāda and the great Viṣṇu-devotee Prahrāda, whom no daitya could destroy; from Prahrāda came the supremely generous Virocana, who gave even his own head to Indra disguised as a beggar-brāhmaṇa; from Virocana came Bali, who gave the earth itself to Viṣṇu in his Vāmana form; and from Bali came Bāṇa, a devoted worshipper of Śiva, mighty and true to his word, who ruled the three worlds from his city of Śoṇitapura, so favoured by Śiva that even the gods served him and only they, out of rivalry, ever felt discontent under his rule. Once, pleasing Maheśvara with a thousand-armed tāṇḍava dance, Bāṇa was offered a boon by the compassionate lord of all; bowing in devotion, he asked only that Śiva remain his protector always, dwelling in his city with his gaṇas and his sons. Śiva, though difficult to propitiate, granted this out of grace and took up residence there with his retinue. One day, sporting on the bank of the river Śoṇita near Bāṇa's city together with gods and asuras, amid dancing gandharvas and apsarases, chanting sages, and the very seasons and breezes yielding to the joy of his presence, Śiva, overcome by unconquered desire, sent Nandin to fetch the adorned Pārvatī from Kailāsa. Pārvatī agreed and began to adorn herself, but as Nandin lingered, an impatient Śiva sent him back again to hasten her. Meanwhile the assembled apsarases, each eager for the honour of being chosen queen by the foe of Kāma should she be found touching him first, resolved that whoever among them dared approach Śiva — apart from Pārvatī herself — should go and beguile him. Citralekhā, daughter of Kumbhāṇḍa, volunteered, recalling how Viṣṇu once took the beguiling Mohinī form; at this, Urvaśī and a whole company of apsarases and Mothers each fashioned themselves into the forms of various goddesses — Kālī, Caṇḍikā, Sāvitrī, Gāyatrī, Jayā, Vijayā, and more — vying to outdo one another. Yet it was Ūṣā, Bāṇāsura's own daughter, deeply versed in divine yoga, who through her power took on a form of Pārvatī herself, so radiant, auspicious and marked with divine signs that it granted the heart's desire to whoever beheld it, outshining all the other apsarases' disguises. Perceiving Ūṣā's desire to unite with him in that borrowed form, the all-knowing Girijā, inner ruler of all beings, addressed her friend: since Ūṣā had taken her own form out of longing, the time appointed for her union would come in the month of Kārttika, under Mādhava's ordinance, on the twelfth of the bright fortnight, in the dread of night — whichever man, having kept his vow, should come upon her sleeping unguarded in the inner apartments, him the gods themselves would make her husband, and with him she would find her joy, her lifelong devotion to Viṣṇu notwithstanding. Ūṣā, blushing, accepted the prophecy. Then Pārvatī herself, having adorned herself, came into Rudra's presence and sported with him; and when their lovemaking ended, the lord Rudra vanished from sight together with his consort, his gaṇas and the attendant deities.
