Chapter 50 · Attainment of the Mṛtasañjīvinī Knowledge · Verses 1–53

Sanatkumāra tells Vyāsa how the supreme death-quelling knowledge called Mṛtyuñjaya was won by the sage Kāvya (Śukra). Long ago, that heir of Bhṛgu went to Vārāṇasī and, meditating on Viśveśvara, performed austerities there for a long time: he established a liṅga of Śambhu and, before it, a beautiful well, bathing the lord of gods with pañcāmṛta a hundred thousand times, anointing him a thousand times with sandal and fragrant pastes, and worshipping him with an immense array of flowers, leaves, and shoots of every kind, with song, dance, and a thousand names, for a thousand and five years. Seeing the god not in the least inclined to grant a boon, Śukra washed the great impurity of fickleness from his mind and senses with the waters of contemplation and, offering that purified mind like a jewel to the wielder of the Pināka, drank the smoke of husks for a thousand years. Pleased at last with such resolute austerity, Maheśvara came forth from the liṅga, blazing brighter than a thousand suns, and told Bhṛgu's son that he was especially pleased and that nothing was beyond giving to him. Overjoyed, Śukra bowed to Śambhu and, with joined palms raised to his head, praised him with eight verses addressed to his eight forms — sun, moon, wind, fire, water, ether, earth, and the sacrificer — as the destroyer of demons' designs, the eye of all worlds, the life and refuge of all beings, the sole purifier, the pervader and sustainer of the universe, the friend of the friendless, and the supreme goal beyond all goals. Raising the bowed brāhmaṇa from the ground, Mahādeva declared him a pure devotee and, through the merit of the liṅga's establishment and worship and of his pure and steadfast austerity in the great field of Avimukta, promised that Śukra would, in this very body, enter his belly and be born again as his son by the path of his generative organ. He then granted him a boon kept hidden even from Hari and Hiraṇyagarbha: the spotless Mṛtasañjīvinī knowledge, self-wrought through his own great austerity, by which whomever Śukra should target with disciplined repetition of the mantra would surely be restored to life. Śiva further decreed that Śukra's splendour would outshine sun and fire and that he would become foremost among the planets as the star Śukra: his baleful glance would ruin any journey undertaken by men or women, yet at his rising all marriages and rites of dharma would bear fruit, all lunar days joined with him would turn auspicious, and his devotees would be blessed with abundant seed and offspring. The liṅga Śukra had established would be known as Śukreśa, and those who kept the nakta-vrata through the year, performed their water-rites at the Śukra-well on his day, and worshipped Śukreśa would gain unfailing seed, sons, virility, good fortune, learning, and happiness. Having granted these boons, the god merged back into the liṅga, and Bhārgava, his mind well satisfied, returned to his own abode. Thus, Sanatkumāra concludes, did Śukra by the power of austerity obtain the knowledge called Mṛtyuñjaya.
