Sanatkumāra relates the mantra of a hundred and eight epithets that Śukra, preceptor of the daityas, recited in salutation to Śiva while lodged within his belly, and tells how, on completing it, Śukra came forth through the channel of the liṅga like potent seed from Śambhu. Gaurī took the newborn Śukra as her own son, and Śiva made him ageless and immortal, glorious as a second Śaṅkara; and when three thousand years had passed on earth, that treasury of the Vedas was born again from Maheśvara. Coming upon Andhaka — withered upon the point of Śiva's trident, resolute and given over to austerity — meditating on the Supreme Lord, Śukra saw him reciting a further hundred and eight names of Śiva: Mahādeva, the odd-eyed, crested with the crescent moon, the immortal and eternal pillar, blue-throated, wielder of the Pināka, bull-eyed, giver of every desire, the foe and burner of Kāma; misshapen, dread lord of the mountain, garlanded and red-robed, the yogī who burns even Time, destroyer of Tripura, skull-bearer; of hidden vow and secret mantra, ground of the eight siddhis, giver of lordship over the three worlds; hero and slayer of heroes, flesh-devourer, Bhairava, Maheśvara; shaker of the three worlds, hunter, destroyer of sacrifice, accompanied by the sons of the Kṛttikās; wrapped in an elephant's hide, adorned with serpents, attended by vetālas and śākinīs; the un-terrible slayer of terrible daityas, ash-smeared and pure, served by hundreds of bheruṇḍas; lord and master of beings, dwelling in the five elements, dear to Caṇḍikā; fierce and winged, forever feasting on wine, the licking flame more terrible than death and beyond death's own reach, the death of death, dweller in cremation-grounds; passion and dispassion, worshipped by the passionless; sattva, rajas, tamas, dharma and adharma, truth and untruth, being and non-being uncaused; the Lord who is half woman, the sun of a hundred million suns, sacrifice and its lord, Rudra, Īśāna, the giver of boons, Śiva. Meditating on these hundred and eight forms of the Supreme Self, the demon Andhaka was freed from his great terror; the pleased god anointed him with a divine shower of nectar and brought him down from the trident's point, and, addressing him with kind words, declared himself satisfied with his self-restraint, valour and fortitude, and bade him choose a boon in recompense for his three thousand years of endurance. Hearing this, Andhaka, trembling, knelt with joined palms before the lord of Umā and begged that his earlier, delirious words on the battlefield, and whatever offence he had committed out of delusion — including against Pārvatī herself — be held against him no longer, pleading that compassion is ever due to the wretched and the devoted; taking refuge, he asked that the goddess, mother of the universe, look upon him without anger, wondering how he, a pitiable daitya bound by desire, anger, old age and death, could compare to her or to Śiva's own boundless generosity, and asking that Vīraka, Śiva's own valiant son, not turn his wrath on so wretched a creature. He asked leave to behold his mother Pārvatī always with due reverence, to live in peace among the gods and Śiva's own gaṇas, tranquil and devoted to yoga, and never again to remember the contrary nature born of his birth as a dānava — and begged this boon of Maheśāna's grace. Having spoken, Andhaka fell silent, meditating on the three-eyed god and gazing on Pārvatī his mother; looked upon by Rudra with a gracious eye, he recalled his own former history and wondrous birth, and, his desire thereby fulfilled, bowed to his divine parents and became one whose purpose was accomplished. Pārvatī and the wise Śaṅkara smelled his head in blessing, and he obtained from the satisfied, crescent-crowned god all that he had wished. Sanatkumāra closes by noting that he has thus related the whole ancient history of Andhaka and his attainment, by Mahādeva's grace, of supreme happiness through lordship among the gaṇas, and has told also the death-destroying Mṛtyuñjaya mantra, which is to be recited with effort, for it grants the fruit of every desire.
