Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra what the daityas, led by Andhaka, did once Rudra had swallowed Śukra. Sanatkumāra recounts how, with their guru gone, the daityas lost every hope of victory — like elephants without trunks, bulls without horns, a headless mass of bodies, twice-borns without learning, strong men without exertion, effort without fortune, a wife without a husband, birds without feathers, a lifetime without merit, or scripture without vows — just as dharma is nothing without truth. Seized with despair when Nandin carried Śukra off and Śiva swallowed him, yet still striving for the joy of battle, the daityas grew disheartened until Andhaka, seeing this, addressed Huṇḍa, Tuhuṇḍa and the rest: Nandin has deceived them, and with the one Bhārgava gone their courage, strength, fame, splendour and valour are all lost at once; shame on them, for they could not protect even their all-capable guru in his hour of need. He urges them to fight on without delay, remembering Śukra's feet: he himself, together with the gods headed by Vāsava, will overpower and slay the pramathas and free Bhārgava as a yogī frees the soul from action — or else Śukra, a lord in his own right, may find his own way out by his own yoga. Resolved to die rather than flee — since death at the 'ford' of battle outweighs every gift, austerity and pilgrimage, while desertion leads only to the abode of blinding darkness and lasting disgrace in both worlds — the daityas sound the war-drum and fall upon the pramathas with every weapon at hand, filling earth and sky with a tumult that leaves both armies bloodied and faint with thirst. Nandin and the pramathas at first prevail; but Andhaka himself, mounting his chariot, charges into the fray and destroys the pramathas as thunderbolts shatter mountains or wind empties rainless clouds, piercing each foe, near or far, with arrows equal to his own hairs in number — until Skanda, Vināyaka, Nandin, Somanandin, Naigameya and the mighty Vaiśākha rally in fury and, in a wondrous battle, blind Andhaka in turn beneath a storm of tridents, spears and arrows. The uproar of this second clash reaches Śukra within Śiva's belly: searching for an opening, wandering there homeless as the wind for a hundred years, he beholds the seven worlds and the netherworlds, the wondrous realms of Brahmā, Nārāyaṇa, Indra, the Ādityas and the Apsarases, and the very war of the pramathas and asuras — yet finds no flaw anywhere in that body, as a wicked man finds none in the pure. At last, by the Śāmbhava yoga and in the form of seed, reciting a supreme mantra, he comes forth by the path of the liṅga, bows to Śiva, and is taken up by Gaurī as her own son and freed from every hindrance. Seeing him emerge, the compassionate Maheśvara smiles and declares that, having issued from his liṅga like seed, Bhārgava shall henceforth be called Śukra and is his own son; so dismissed, the radiant Śukra bows once more and offers a hymn of praise, calling Śiva boundless in feet, form, heads and arms, the ender of all things, eight-fold in manifestation, the granter of every desire to gods and asuras alike, and the destroyer of the evil eye. Having praised and bowed to Śiva again, Śukra, at his command, re-enters the army of the dānavas as the moon enters a bank of clouds. Thus, Sanatkumāra says, has the swallowing of the poet-sage in that battle been told; he now invites Vyāsa to hear the very mantra Śukra recited within Śambhu's belly.

Vyāsa spoke: When Śukra had been swallowed by Rudra, what did the dānavas do? Tell me the truth of it, O great sage — the great heroes headed by Andhaka.

Doubtful readingThe printed numeral on this verse breaks the run from four to six with a digit that does not belong in the sequence, an evident slip in the count; it is presented here as the fifth verse, restoring the unbroken run of numbers.

Śukra spoke: You are of endless feet, of endless form, of endless heads, the ender of all, and Śiva himself; of endless arms — how, indeed, having bowed my head, shall I praise one such as you, worthy of praise?

You are the eight-formed, you are of endless form, you are the granter of desires to all gods and asuras; and you are the destroyer of the evil eye — how shall I praise one such as you, worthy of praise?

iti stutvā śivaṃ śukraḥ punarnatvā śivājñayā | viveśa dānavānīkaṃ meghamālāṃ yathā śaśī ||
Sanatkumāra spoke: Having thus praised Śiva and bowed again, Śukra, by Śiva's command, entered the army of the dānavas, as the moon enters a bank of clouds.

Thus has been told the swallowing of the poet-sage by Śaṅkara in that battle; now hear the mantra that was recited by the poet within Śambhu's belly.

Thus ends the forty-eighth chapter, called "The Swallowing of Śukra," in the Yuddha-khaṇḍa — the fifth section of the second Rudra-saṃhitā, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa.
