Chapter 47 · Śukra Swallowed within the Battle with Andhaka · Verses 1–53

Vyāsa, having heard in brief that the wise Śukra, preceptor of the daityas, was devoured by the enemy of Tripura amid that dreadful battle, asks Sanatkumāra to relate the story at length: why did Śiva's inner fire not consume the blazing Bhārgava, how did he eventually come forth from Śiva's belly, how long and by what means did he propitiate him there, how did he obtain the supreme death-averting knowledge, and how did Andhaka in turn win a place among Śiva's own gaṇas after emerging from his trident? Brahmā recounts how Sanatkumāra, remembering Śiva's feet, took up the tale. He tells Vyāsa: in the great battle between Śaṅkara, lord of the impenetrable thunderbolt-array, and Andhaka, lord of the mountain-array, the daityas at first prevailed, but then, by Śiva's power, the pramathas gained the upper hand. Despondent, Andhaka withdrew alone to his guru Śukra and, bowing before him, described their reversal: how, by Śukra's own favour, the daityas had always counted even Hara and Upendra as mere straws and made the gods themselves fear them as elephants fear lions; how, by that same grace, they had broken through the pramathas' array and entered the vajra-formation; and how they now stood, steadfast as cattle, in Śukra's refuge even amid the heat of battle. He begs Śukra to protect his fallen and afflicted troops — Huṇḍa and the rest, struck down by terrible foes — declaring that the time has now come to use the supreme knowledge Śukra won of old by inhaling the smoke of chaff for a thousand years, so that all may witness its fruit as he revives the slain asuras. Hearing this, Śukra, though troubled at heart over how a knowledge received from Śaṅkara himself could rightly be turned against Śaṅkara's own pramathas, resolves that the duty owed to one who has taken refuge outweighs all else, and, smiling and remembering Śiva's feet, accepts Andhaka's plea, explaining that the knowledge was indeed acquired for the sake of his kin. Invoking its divine source in reverence, he recites the spell over each fallen daitya in turn, and at once, wound-free and whole, as though merely risen from sleep, all of them — Huṇḍa and the other great asuras — stand up again, roaring like rain-laden clouds, ready once more for war. Seeing this, Nandin and the other astonished pramathas resolve that Śiva himself must be told. Indignant at Bhārgava's deed, Nandin goes to Maheśa and reports that the feat accomplished by the gaṇeśvaras — one that even the gods with Indra could scarcely equal — has been undone in a moment by Śukra's revival of Tuhuṇḍa, Huṇḍa, Kumbha, Jambha, Vipāka, Pāka and the rest, who, now returned from Yama's abode, are routing the pramathas; he asks how victory or peace can ever be theirs if the daityas are endlessly raised anew. Śiva, smiling, commands Nandin to go at once and snatch that foremost of brāhmaṇas from the midst of the daityas, as a hawk seizes a quail's chick, and bring him swiftly. Roaring like a lion, Nandin plunges into the demon army, and, scattering the daityas who guard Śukra with nooses, swords, trees and boulders, seizes him — his garments slipping, ornaments falling, hair loosened — as a śarabha seizes an elephant, while the asuras pursue with lion-cries as though to rescue him and rain down thunderbolts, tridents, swords, axes, discuses and stones upon him like storm-clouds. Burning hundreds of their weapons with the fire of his own mouth, the lord of the gaṇas brings Śukra, having distressed the enemy ranks, to Śiva's side amid the still-raging battle of gods and asuras, and announces, "This, O lord, is that very Śukra." The god of gods receives him as one receives a pure offering, and then, without a word, the protector of all beings casts that lord of poets into his mouth like a piece of fruit — at which a great, repeated cry of "hā, hā" bursts forth from all the asuras.
