Andhaka, sensing Śiva's intent, takes up his mace and, together with his army, first fashions a dreadful monster named Gila, unbreakable even by the finest gods. Reaching the mouth of Śiva's cave, the daityas break in with weapons bright as lightning, attacking Vīraka and Pārvatī, smashing the door, destroying the flowers, fruit, water and garden-paths, and tearing at the mountain's sunlit peaks. Enraged, trident-bearing Hara remembers and summons his own army, dreadful bhūtas, and the gods headed by Viṣṇu, who arrive at once with their mounts and hosts of every kind — chariots, elephants, camels, lions, tigers, serpents, pretas, piśācas, divine cars, rivers and mountains — and stand undismayed before Kapardin, with Vīraka alone made their commander. Sent forth to battle by Maheśvara, they wage with Gila and the daitya-lord's army a war like the end of an aeon, until, in fury, the thirty gods themselves are swallowed — Brahmā, Indra, Viṣṇu, the Sun and Moon among them — leaving only Vīraka. Grief-stricken, Vīraka enters the cave, bows to Śarva, and reports that the entire host has been devoured by the daitya Vighasa. He recalls how Viṣṇu was once cursed by Vasiṣṭha and the seven sages, for the seizing of vighasa, to be swallowed in just such a battle and to fight his way out with his own fists, and how, released in the forest of Badarī, he would attain the Supreme free of taint — which is why this daitya-devourer wanders the battlefield daily, famished, ever since. Vīraka further warns that Śukra, like Rāhu to the sun and moon, is the gods' fiercest foe, for he revives with his ambrosial vidyā every daitya the gods slay; better, he says, that they give up their lives than fail to act, and only Śiva can now take charge. Enraged at this report, Śiva reflects long, then, his body radiant as the sun, chants the Sāmaveda and by his own laughter dispels the darkness. In the light thus restored, Vīraka fights on, and Nandī — called here Mahārudra, born when Śilāda ate powdered rock, and once the conqueror of the triple city — joins the battle, only to be swallowed in turn. Śiva himself, mounted on his bull, then advances on Vighasa reciting a mantra of disgorgement, until Vīraka, with the whole army and Viṣṇu, bursts forth from the monster's mouth, and the rejoicing host renews the war. Once this is won, Śukra begins reviving the slain daityas with his vidyā, so the gaṇas bind him like a beast and bring him to Śiva, who swallows the dānavas' teacher in turn. With Śukra gone, the gods crush the daitya host entirely, and hosts of bhūtas, vetālas, birds and wolves feast upon the corpse-strewn field; Andhaka himself, of Hiraṇyakaśipu's line, is at last conquered by Hari, Hara, and Indra, his forces scattering into the netherworld, the mountains, and the sea, and his very pride shattered by Viṣṇu's mace. Yet, boon-protected, he refuses to leave the field: wounded by Indra, he nonetheless routs the gods anew with weapons, trees, mountains and floods, and summons Śiva himself, assailing Pārvatī and Rudra with serpents, thunderbolts and Śambara's hundredfold deceptions. In a last stratagem he provokes the gods' weapons to shatter his own body, so that from each fallen drop of his blood a new Andhaka springs up, deformed and dreadful, until Śiva pierces them with his trident as fast as they arise. When yet another host is born from the hot blood of these slain doubles, Viṣṇu, by yoga, summons Śiva and calls forth a fierce, withered, many-armed goddess from Śambhu's own ear; praised by all the gods, she drinks the daitya-blood pooling on the battlefield before it can spawn further doubles. Alone, his blood spent, Andhaka fights on with fists, knees, claws and head, remembering the ancient kṣatra-dharma of his line, until Śiva pierces his heart with the trident and holds his stump-like body aloft in the sky, scorched by the sun and soaked by wind-driven rain, until it crumbles like shards of frost — yet even so, Andhaka clings to life. Moved at last to compassion, Śambhu, pleased by his unbroken praise, lovingly grants him the rank of a Gaṇapati. At the battle's end, Hari, Brahmā, and all the lords of the worlds duly worship and extol Śiva with manifold hymns, bowing and crying out in joyous victory; and Hara, taking leave of the honoured mountains and gods, retires delighted to the mountain-cave with Pārvatī and his sinless son Vīraka, now freed from the terrible mouth of Vighasa, to sport there at ease.
