Chapter 45·The Description of the Envoy's Dialogue at the Start of the Battle·Verses 1–54
Sanatkumāra continues the account of the war for Pārvatī's cave. The intoxicated Andhaka, moving like a rutting elephant and leading a vast army, comes upon the cave entrance guarded by Vīraka and, drawn to it as a moth to flame, is repeatedly repelled and, after a brief single-handed fight, is defeated and flees in exhaustion. Prahlāda and the chief daityas — Virocana, Bali, Bāṇa, Bhaji, Kujambha, Śambara, Vṛtra, and others — then attack together but are likewise split and routed by Vīraka amid a battlefield thick with gore, where Śiva, consoling Pārvatī, recalls the fierce Mahāpāśupata vow he once performed and declares that his strength has been sapped through his union with her; resolving to perform a still more terrible vow, he departs into the forest for a thousand years while Pārvatī waits on Mount Mandara, guarded only by Vīraka. Andhaka, maddened by his boon and by desire, returns with his army and wages an immense five-hundred-day battle of every kind of weapon against Vīraka, who is at last overwhelmed and swoons at the cave's mouth. In terror, Pārvatī within the cave calls to mind Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Indra, and the hosts of gods, who at once arrive — assuming female form, since only women may enter a queen's inner apartments — and enter the cave as a great company of goddesses, cheering Gaurī with drums and conches. Vīraka revives and resumes the fight; a host of goddesses — Brāhmī, Gaurī, Nārāyaṇī, Aindrī, Vaiśvānarī, Yāmyā, Nairṛtī, Vāruṇī, Vāyavī, the Śakti of Kubera, Yakṣeśvarī, and others — issue forth, at first daunted by the size of the daitya host but then, composing themselves, appointing Vīraka their general and joining Gaurī in an unprecedented battle. Meanwhile Andhaka arrays a great formation and, mindful of Viṣṇu, stations a terrible champion named the Swallower; when Viṣṇu arrives, and after a thousand years Śiva himself appears blazing like the fire of dissolution, the women and Vīraka renew the fight with joy. Gaurī, having honoured Giriśa and displayed her husband's valour, is drawn by Hara into the cave; the thousand goddesses are dismissed with honour, and Vīraka is set to guard the cave's mouth. Finding neither Gaurī nor Giriśa on the field, the shrewd lord of the asuras sends his own envoy, battered from the fighting, to Śiva with a proud and insolent demand that he release the woman, since he is a mere ascetic and no true sage but an enemy, and to fight or be dragged down to Pātāla. Śiva, the skull-garlanded destroyer of the wicked's pride, answers with cold contempt: let the daitya come and fight by strength if he is able, since strength alone determines who has any use for wife, wealth, or even the sustaining of the body — and he, for his part, will do what must be done, without doubt. Hearing this, the envoy departs rejoicing and, roaring, returns to report to his lord.
