Sanatkumāra narrates: once, at play, Andhaka's intoxicated brothers taunted him, the blind son of Hiraṇyākṣa, asking what business a blind man had with kingship, and reminding him that their foolish father had obtained him, deformed and eyeless, by pleasing Girisha through terrible austerity, so that he alone -- not Andhaka -- was fit to share the kingdom. Wounded and despondent, Andhaka went by night to a lonely forest and for ten thousand years performed a fearsome austerity, standing on one foot without food, each day cutting flesh and blood from his own body and offering it, with mantras, into a fire, until he was reduced to a mere frame of sinew and bone and prepared to cast even that into the flames. The gods, astonished and afraid, hastened to propitiate Brahmā, who restrained him and bade him choose a boon. Andhaka asked that those who had seized his kingdom become his servants, that he receive a divine eye, that Indra and the gods become his tributaries, and that he meet death at the hands of none -- not gods, daityas, gandharvas, yakṣas, serpents, men, Nārāyaṇa, or all-pervading Śarva. Alarmed at so sweeping a request, Brahmā asked him to accept some seed of his own mortality, since none escapes death forever; hearing this, Andhaka asked instead that his destruction come about only should he ever desire a woman who was unattainable in body, speech, and mind, and who was to him ever like a mother. Brahmā, greatly astonished, sought Śaṅkara's sanction and granted this; Andhaka then asked to be restored in flesh so that he might fight, and Brahmā touched his ravaged body, healing it completely and restoring his sight, before departing to his own abode honoured by sages and siddhas. Made whole, Andhaka returned to his city, where Prahlāda and the other dānava lords, submissive, relinquished the kingdom to him; he then conquered heaven, made Indra himself a tributary, subdued nāgas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, yakṣas, men, and beasts, and brought the whole triple world under his sway. Given over to countless women of the netherworld, earth, and heaven, and to every divine luxury, Andhaka spent ten thousand years in dissipation, growing ever more arrogant, contemptuous of the Vedas, brāhmaṇas, and even the gods, and leading his own sons astray with sophistry while destroying Vedic dharma. Journeying at last with his army to Mount Mandara, he built a wondrous city upon its ridge and settled there; his ministers Duryodhana, Vaidhasa, and Hasti, wandering the mountain, came upon a great ascetic seated in a cave in meditation -- crowned with the half-moon, wreathed in serpents, ash-smeared, four-armed, armed with trident and bow, guarded by a fierce ape-faced attendant and an aged white bull -- and beside him a woman of incomparable, jewel-like beauty, clad in coral and gold. Certain that so rare a treasure belonged by right to their master, the enjoyer of fine jewels in all three worlds, the ministers hastened back and described all they had seen; consumed with desire, Andhaka at once sent them back to demand the woman. The ministers found the sage, declared themselves Andhaka's envoys, and imperiously demanded to know whose son he was, why he sat there in comfort with so fine a woman, mocking his ashes, skull-garland, weapons, matted hair, twilight rites, and his mismatched austerities and ornaments as unfit for a dignified man, and commanding him to surrender the woman without protest, lay down his weapons, and confine himself to pure austerity, or else be made to give up his body entirely, since Andhaka alone was lord of jewels in the three worlds. Recognizing Andhaka's wicked arrogance yet keeping to a worldly bearing, the ascetic -- who was in truth Śiva himself -- smilingly replied that he remembered no father or mother, practised the Pāśupata vow alone in the cave, and that the woman was inalienably his own wife, the very accomplishment of the all-pervading one, adding only, ironically, that Andhaka might take whatever pleased him; and then he fell silent. The ministers, sensing something profound in this quiet reply, bowed and returned to Andhaka; reporting his words with amusement, they mocked the ascetic's evident frailty and mismatch against Andhaka's might, yet warned, quoting his very words, that the sage -- who spoke of a monkey-faced attendant named Vīraka, and who deemed the three worlds mere straw -- had shown no fear, and that Andhaka would remember this warning later. Hearing their words, Andhaka, dull-witted and enraged like fire fed with clarified butter, found even this true and well-meant counsel crooked and bitter; and, sword in hand, intoxicated by his own boon, pierced by the arrows of desire and mimicking the fury of a storm, he readied himself, doomed by adverse fate, to go there himself.

Sanatkumara spoke: Hearing those words of theirs, and pondering them himself, grown despondent, he pacified them with manifold words, and went by night to a lonely, deserted forest.

Sanatkumara spoke: Hearing this profound utterance, those danavas bowed down to him with their heads, and then went to the son of the foremost daitya, who had vowed the destruction of the three worlds.

‘Such words as these, O gracious lord of the danavas, the ascetic has spoken; it is not fitting that you wage war with him here.’ Thus, O king, he addressed you, only smiling.

Sword in hand, intoxicated by the boon he had received, mimicking the fury of a violent gale, pierced by the arrows of the god of love, he readied himself to set out -- doomed by adverse fate.
