Chapter 43 · The Slaying of Hiraṇyakaśipu and the Birth of Andhaka · Verses 1–43

Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra what Hiraṇyakaśipu, elder brother of the slain Hiraṇyākṣa, did after his brother's death. Sanatkumāra relates: grieving and enraged, Hiraṇyakaśipu sent forth slaughter-loving asuras to persecute the gods and their creatures, driving the gods from heaven to wander unseen on earth; having performed his brother's funeral rites, he resolved to make himself unconquerable, unageing, immortal, and sole sovereign, and undertook a most terrible austerity on Mount Mandara, standing balanced on his toe with arms upraised and eyes fixed on the sky, until a smoking fire born of his tapas blazed from his head and scorched the three worlds, driving the gods, their faces disfigured by its heat, to Brahmaloka to entreat the Creator. Brahmā, accompanied by Bhṛgu, Dakṣa and other sages, went to the daitya lord's hermitage and offered him a boon; with unclouded mind Hiraṇyakaśipu asked never to fear death from weapon, missile, tree, mountain, water, fire, foe, god, daitya, sage, or siddha, by day or night, from above or below. Pleased, and bowing inwardly to Viṣṇu, Brahmā granted the boon for ninety-six thousand years and bade him rise and rule the dānavas. Anointed king, Hiraṇyakaśipu, heedless in his pride, overturned all dharma and conquered the gods, who fled in fear to the Ocean of Milk and laid their sorrows before Viṣṇu; he consoled them, promised to slay the daitya by force, and sent them home content, the gods already counting Hiraṇyakaśipu as good as dead. Viṣṇu then assumed the terrible form of Narasiṃha — matted-haired, fanged, sharp-clawed, half-lion and half-man, blazing like a crore of suns — and that very day entered the city of the asuras, where he fought and crushed the daitya hosts. Seeing that all-pervading lion, Prahlāda, Hiraṇyakaśipu's own son, urged his father to submit and seek refuge, warning that no warrior in the three worlds could match him; but Hiraṇyakaśipu, taunting his son as a coward, ordered his mightiest champions to seize the lion, who consumed them instantly like moths rushing into a flame. Undeterred, Hiraṇyakaśipu himself took up every weapon and fought Narasiṃha for what seemed a whole day of Brahmā, both roaring with rage; when his weapons and his own multiplied arms failed him, he charged with a trident, whereupon Narasiṃha seized him, laid him across his thighs, tore open his heart with his claws, and crushed his lifeless body again and again. His enemy slain, Viṣṇu, well pleased, summoned the ever-reverent Prahlāda, anointed him king of the daityas, and departed by his own inconceivable path; all the gods, led by Brahmā, bowed to him and returned rejoicing to their own abodes. Sanatkumāra closes by noting that he has thus recounted, in due course, Andhaka's birth from Rudra, Hiraṇyanetra's death at Varāha's hands, his brother Hiraṇyakaśipu's destruction by Narasiṃha, and Prahlāda's attainment of the kingdom, and now proposes to relate the power Andhaka gained through Śiva, his subsequent battle with Hari, and his eventual lordship over Śiva's own gaṇas.

Then he was seized by that lord of beasts with his many arms, hard as the essence of mountains; laying him upon his thighs, he tore him with the sprouting claws that pierced the dānava's vital parts.

Having torn out, with the weapon of his claws, the heart's lotus mingled with blood, Hiraṇyakaśipu departed from life in an instant. Cast aside then, he became stiff as wood, his every limb crushed to fragments again and again.

Then, O brahmin, all the lords of the gods, exceedingly delighted, having bowed in that direction to the adorable, blessed lord Viṣṇu — whose own task was accomplished — went, headed by the grandsire, to their own abodes.
