Nārada, having heard the narration of Śaṅkhacūḍa's slaying, tells Brahmā he is as satisfied as one who has drunk nectar, and asks to hear also whatever other deed the great Maheśa performed through his māyā, sporting his auspicious sport and delighting his devotee. Brahmā recounts that Vyāsa, upon hearing of Śaṅkhacūḍa's slaying, had once put this very question to Sanatkumāra, who, having duly praised Maheśa's auspicious deed, told him to hear how Andhaka obtained the lordship of the gaṇas from Śambhu, the supreme soul — how Andhaka, having formerly waged a great battle with Śiva and repeatedly propitiated him through his own inward goodness, came to share in the wondrous greatness of Śambhu, protector of those who take refuge and ever affectionate to his devotees. Hearing this, Vyāsa, bowing with devotion, asked Sanatkumāra who Andhaka truly is — in whose lineage he was born, of what nature, and whose son he is — begging to hear the whole matter with its hidden meaning, since he had learned only a little of it from Skanda. Sanatkumāra then narrates: formerly Śiva, gracious to his devotees, came from Kailāsa with Pārvatī's gaṇas to sport in Kāśī, made it his capital for the people's happiness, appointed Bhairava as its guardian, and later went to Mount Mandara, where he sported joyously with Śivā amid the chief gaṇas. There, on the eastern slope, Pārvatī playfully covered Śiva's eyes with her lotus-hands; as his eyes closed, a great darkness fell over the world, and from the touch of her hands upon his forehead a drop of sweat, heated by that contact, fell to the ground. From it a fearsome, blind, dark, matted-haired being was born, laughing, weeping, dancing, and roaring all at once. Smiling, Śiva asked Gaurī why she feared what her own sport had caused; she opened her eyes, and, seeing this dreadful, eyeless creature born of the darkness, asked Śiva the truth of who he was, by whom created, and whose son he was. Śiva, smiling, told Ambikā that this being of wondrous fierce valour was born from his own sweat when she had closed his eyes, and that he was to be named Andhaka; he asked Gaurī to become his rightful guardian and, out of friendship and compassion, to entrust him to the gaṇas for protection. Gaurī, out of compassion, together with her companions, thereafter guarded him by many means as she would her own son. In time, in the season of winter, the demon Hiraṇyanetra, desiring a son and having observed the many sons of his elder brother, and urged on by his wife, resorted to the forest and, unmoved as a log of wood and having conquered anger, performed austerity to behold Maheśvara. Pleased, Śiva went to grant him a boon and asked the reason for his vow. The golden-eyed demon, overjoyed, praised and bowed to Giriśa and explained that he had no valorous son worthy of his lineage, unlike his brother, whose five sons — Prahlāda foremost among them — left him without an heir and without anyone to inherit his kingdom; he declared that only a son who seizes or inherits a kingdom is truly called a son, that the wise hold the higher worlds to belong only to those with sons, and that all beings, and indeed all people, therefore worship the gods and beg for a single son, since one without an heir has no such worlds. Pleased with this plea, Śiva told the demon-king that though no son had been born of his own seed, he himself would give him a son: his own son Andhaka, equal to Hiraṇyanetra in valour and unconquered, whom he should accept as his own, setting aside all sorrow. Having spoken thus, Hara, together with Gaurī, gladly gave Andhaka to Hiraṇyanetra; the demon, having circumambulated Śiva and worshipped Rudra with many hymns, went home content to his own kingdom. Thereafter, having obtained this son from Giriśa, the fierce-valoured demon, having conquered all the thirty gods, carried the earth away to the netherworld, to his own realm. The gods, sages and siddhas then implored Viṣṇu of boundless valour, the all-souled and sacrifice-embodied one, to take up the boar form as his foremost body. Tearing open the earth with blows of his snout, entering the surface of the netherworld, crushing demons by the hundred with his snout and his unbroken tusks, churning the armies of the night-wanderers with feet radiant as thunderbolts, and wielding the discus Sudarśana blazing like ten million suns, he severed the flaming head of Hiraṇyanetra and burned the wicked demons; the joyful king of the daitya lords thereupon anointed Andhaka in his place. Returning to his own abode and seeing the earth lifted up on the point of his tusk, that great soul joyfully nourished the earth and its portion from the netherworld as before. Praised by all the gods, the joyful sages, and the lotus-born Brahmā, Hari, fierce of body in his boar form, the excellent doer of the gods' work, then returned to his own realm. With the demon-lord Hiraṇyanetra thus slain by the boar-formed god, all the gods, all the sages, and every other being at once became happy.
