Nārada asks Brahmā to continue the story. Brahmā tells how, while Rudra roamed the three worlds with Satī mounted on his bull, they came to Daṇḍakāraṇya, where Śiva showed her its beauty and they saw Rāma, with Lakṣmaṇa, searching in anguish for Sītā, taken by Rāvaṇa. Rāma, unrecognised by Satī as an avatar, was bowed to reverently by Śiva, who then departed without granting him further darśana. Bewildered that her own husband should bow to a seeming mortal, Satī questioned Śiva; he explained that Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are portions of Viṣṇu and Śeṣa, but, unconvinced because of his own māyā, was told by Śiva to test Rāma herself by taking Sītā's form. She did so; Rāma recognised her at once and gently questioned her, and she realised with deep shame that he truly is Viṣṇu. She explained to Rāma why Śiva had bowed to him and why she, confused, had tested him at Śiva's own command. Rāma's eyes brightened with love for his own lord on hearing this, and, lacking Śiva's express command, he did not go to him but instead extolled his greatness to Satī.

O Rāma, now I know that you are Viṣṇu — I have seen your whole lordly power. Yet, though I am free of doubt, hear this too, O you of great mind.

[O Nārada,] hearing her words, Rāma's eyes brightened with joy; he remembered his own lord Śambhu, and love for him welled up all the more in his heart.

Yet without Śambhu's own command, O sage, Rāghava did not go to Śambhu's presence with Satī; instead, extolling his greatness, he spoke on to Satī.
