Content at last with their long years of play, Satī grows dispassionate and, meeting Śiva alone, bows to him and asks to know the supreme truth that frees a soul, easily and at once, from the sorrow of transmigration. Śiva identifies that truth as vijñāna, the pure, unwavering realization 'I am Brahman,' and declares that the mother of this realization is nothing other than his own bhakti, devotion, which he goes on to expound in full: its two great divisions, with qualities and without; their further division by steadfastness; and, at the heart of the teaching, its nine limbs — śravaṇa (hearing), kīrtana (chanting), smaraṇa (remembrance), sevana (service), dāsya (servitude), arcana (worship), vandana (homage), sakhya (companionship), and ātma-samarpaṇa (self-surrender) — each carefully defined. Śiva praises bhakti as the one path to happiness in all three worlds and every age, and above all in the Kali age, where knowledge and dispassion alone have grown weak for want of receptive minds, while bhakti alone still bears fruit directly. He offers as proof several episodes of his own acting purely for a devotee's sake — burning away Kāla in wrath, humbling the Sun with his trident, abandoning Rāvaṇa and his army without favour, and having Vyāsa driven from Kāśī for his fault — declaring himself, in the end, wholly and unashamedly subject to whoever practises devotion to him. Overjoyed at this teaching, Satī bows to Śiva in her heart and asks further about the associated sciences of mantra and yantra and other saving branches of dharma; Śiva, delighted by her question, expounds these fully as well — tantra with its five aṅgas, the greatness of the various gods and their devotees together with their traditional stories, the duties of caste and stage of life, of kings, sons and wives, and the sciences of medicine, astrology and physiognomy — before the chapter closes with Satī and Śiva, both omniscient, both benefactors of the three worlds, resuming their manifold, playful sport together on Kailāsa and in other places.

Each of those two, in turn, is twofold, by the distinction of steadfast and non-steadfast; the steadfast kind should be known as sixfold, while the second is remembered as of a single kind.
