Chapter 22 · Śiva and Satī's Life on the Himālaya · Verses 1–70

As the monsoon breaks over Kailāsa, Satī, growing anxious at their lack of a settled home through the fearsome rains, appeals to Śiva at length, describing the thunderclouds, gusting winds, hail and darkened skies of the season in vivid and personal terms, and begging him to build them a proper dwelling before the storms grow worse. Amused by her earnestness, Śiva laughingly promises to build a home the rain-clouds can never reach, and lays out for her, in loving and extensive detail, several possible mountain abodes: the Himālaya, ever free of cloud above a certain height; his own Kailāsa, resplendent with the Gaṅgā's waters and Kubera's city of Alakā, sung over by Brahmā's daughters; and towering Sumeru, ringed by the cities of Indra, Kubera, Yama, Varuṇa, Agni, and the other guardians of the directions, and crowned by the abode of the gods attended by Rambhā, Śacī, Menakā and other Apsarases. Asked to choose, Satī names the Himālaya itself, and Śiva takes her there to a magnificent peak — crystalline, thronged with Siddha women, wholly inaccessible to birds, ringed with lakes, blooming lotuses and flowering trees, alive with birdsong, and filled with Vidyādharīs, Kinnarīs, Apsarases dancing to vīṇā and mṛdaṅga, and mountain maidens. There, in that heaven-like place, Śiva and Satī sport together for ten thousand years by the reckoning of the gods, sometimes journeying instead to the peak of Meru or roaming among the earth's various continents, gardens and forests before returning again to their mountain home. Absorbed wholly in each other, Śiva gives his mind neither to sacrifice, to contemplation of the Absolute, nor to austerity, holding Satī alone dear; each gazes constantly upon the other's face, and, Brahmā says, in this mutual union the tree of their love only grows, watered continually by the depth of their devotion to one another.

The sweet, lovely cry of the cātaka birds, longing for the clouds, is heard, and travellers upon the road lose the heat and weariness of their journey to the falling shafts of rain.

Seeing that incomparable form of yours and your most lovely face, the women there, with their beautiful, unblinking eyes, shall forever hold their own bodies — bodies whose own splendour is beyond compare — and their own beauty and virtues in disregard.

In that heaven-like place, Śaṅkara, delighted, sported together with Satī for ten thousand years, reckoned by the divine measure.

Sometimes Hara would go from that place to another spot; sometimes to the peak of Meru, ever thronged with gods and goddesses;

Neither by day nor by night did he give his mind to sacrifice, to the Absolute, or to austerity as equal to Satī — for Śambhu's mind held only love for Satī.

Thus Satī gazed always upon Mahādeva's face, and Mahādeva too, everywhere and always, looked upon Satī's face.

Thus, by their mutual union, Kālī and Śiva made the very tree of their love grow, watering it with the water of their own devotion.

NoteThis closing verse departs from the anuṣṭubh metre used throughout the chapter, its two pādas markedly longer than elsewhere.
