Chapter 21·Śiva and Satī's Sweet Play on Kailāsa·Verses 1–47
अथैकविंशोऽध्यायः
Nārada, delighted by what he has already heard of Śiva's wedding, asks Brahmā to tell him once more of Śiva and Satī's own auspicious story. Brahmā takes up the thread from where Śiva, having wed Satī and taken leave of Dakṣa, returns with his hosts to his own abode and dismounts from his beloved bull. Once settled in, and profoundly delighted to be at last alone with Satī, Śiva courteously sends Nandin and the rest of his gaṇas away to their own places, instructing them to return swiftly whenever he calls them to mind. Left alone with Satī in the mountain groves, Śiva indulges in a long sequence of small, tender, playful acts with her — weaving her garlands, secretly watching his own reflection behind her at the mirror, toying with her earrings and jewellery, dyeing her feet with lac, whispering ordinary things in her ear just to look at her face, never straying far from her, hiding by his own illusive power to embrace her and startle her, painting a bee-shaped mark of musk upon her breasts, and playfully touching her under the pretext that a friend resembling her approaches. Delighting so in innumerable groves of Kailāsa for a long while, Śiva then goes to the ridge of the Himālaya and, of his own will, calls Kāma — desire — to mind; Vasanta, the season of spring, immediately follows, spreading its influence through the whole mountain. What follows is an extended, lyrical description of spring's arrival: every tree and creeper bursting into flower, lotuses filling the waters with their attendant bees, the fragrant Malaya breeze blowing, palāśa blossoms glowing like the twilight moon, mango trees humming with bees, camphor-white frost melting in the sun, and moonlit nights growing clear and love-filled. Amid this transformed landscape, Mahādeva and Satī sport freely and for a long time by the rivers and in the groves, each finding no peace apart from the other, Śiva adorning her constantly with flowers he gathers and weaves himself, and being himself, in his devotion to her beauty and her company, as helplessly bound as a great elephant on a rope. Brahmā closes the chapter by remarking that, occupied thus in ceaseless play throughout the groves, ridges and caves of the Himālaya, twenty-five years passed for the divine couple, reckoned in the years of the gods.शिवजी के विवाह की कथा सुनकर प्रसन्न हुए नारदजी ब्रह्माजी से पुनः शिव और सती के कल्याणकारी चरित्र को सुनाने का अनुरोध करते हैं। ब्रह्माजी वहीं से कथा आगे बढ़ाते हैं, जहाँ सती से विवाहकर तथा दक्ष से विदा लेकर शिवजी अपने गणों सहित अपने स्थान पर लौटते हैं और अपने प्रिय वाहन नन्दी से उतरते हैं। अपने स्थान में प्रवेशकर तथा अन्ततः सती के साथ एकान्त पाकर अत्यन्त हर्षित शिवजी नन्दी आदि समस्त गणों को शीघ्र लौट आने का निर्देश देकर विदा कर देते हैं। पर्वतकुंजों में सती के साथ एकान्त पाकर शिवजी अनेक छोटी-छोटी, मधुर क्रीड़ाओं में लीन हो जाते हैं — कभी माला गूँथकर पहनाते हैं, कभी दर्पण में सती के पीछे से स्वयं अपना मुख निहारते हैं, कभी कुण्डल तथा आभूषणों से खेलते हैं, कभी लाक्षारस से चरण रँगते हैं, कभी साधारण बातें कानों में फुसफुसाकर सती का मुख निहारते हैं, कभी माया से छिपकर आलिंगन करके चौंका देते हैं, कभी कस्तूरी से वक्षःस्थल पर भ्रमराकार चित्रकारी करते हैं, तथा कभी किसी सखी के आने का बहाना बनाकर स्पर्श करते हैं। कैलास के अगणित कुंजों में इस प्रकार बहुत काल तक विहार करने के बाद शिवजी हिमालय के शिखर पर जाकर अपनी इच्छा से कामदेव का स्मरण करते हैं, और उनके साथ ही वसन्त ऋतु भी सम्पूर्ण पर्वत पर अपना प्रभाव फैला देती है। इसके बाद वसन्त के आगमन का विस्तृत वर्णन आता है — सभी वृक्ष-लताएँ पुष्पित हो उठती हैं, जल कमलों तथा भ्रमरों से भर जाते हैं, सुगन्धित मलय पवन बहने लगती है, पलाश सन्ध्याकालीन चन्द्रमा-सा चमकने लगता है, आम्रवृक्षों पर भौंरे गुंजार करते हैं, तुषार सूर्य की किरणों से पिघल जाता है, और चाँदनी रातें प्रियजनों-सी मनोहर हो उठती हैं। इस परिवर्तित परिवेश में महादेवजी और सती नदियों तथा कुंजों में स्वच्छन्दतापूर्वक तथा दीर्घकाल तक विहार करते हैं, एक-दूसरे के बिना क्षणमात्र भी चैन न पाते हुए; शिवजी स्वयं गूँथी हुई मालाओं से निरन्तर सती को सुशोभित करते हैं और उनके सौन्दर्य तथा सान्निध्य में महागज के समान बँधे रहते हैं। ब्रह्माजी अन्त में कहते हैं कि हिमालय के कुंजों, शिखरों तथा गुफाओं में इस निरन्तर विहार में लगे रहते हुए देवताओं के वर्ष के अनुसार पचीस वर्ष व्यतीत हो गये।

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा — हे मुने! आपकी इच्छा परम दयावान् शिवजी की लीला सुनने में लगी हुई है। यह तो परम सौभाग्य की बात है, हे सौम्य! जो आपने मुझे शिवजी की लीला का वर्णन करने के लिये बार-बार प्रेरित किया है।

शिवजी कभी वनों से तोड़कर लाये हुए पुष्पों की मनोहर माला बनाकर सती के हार-स्थान अर्थात् हृदय में पहनाते थे।
