Chapter Twenty·Śiva and Satī's Departure for Kailāsa·Verses 1–61
Once Śiva has relented from slaying Brahmā, everyone rejoices, and Śiva has Brahmā touch his own head at his command; the moment Brahmā does, a bull-headed manifestation of Śiva appears there instantly in place of Brahmā's own head, to the astonishment of the watching gods. Mortified, Brahmā begs forgiveness and asks for a penance. Śiva declares that this very humiliation is the penance: Brahmā, wandering the earth in human form on account of his human transgression, shall become famous everywhere as \'Rudra's Head,\' the helper of radiant brahmins in all their undertakings, and the telling and retelling of this very story of his fault shall progressively purify both himself and any who hears it, freeing them from the sin of desire for another's wife. Śiva also declares the four drops of Brahmā's spilled seed unfit to be held by anyone, and transforms them into four great clouds of dissolution — Saṃvartaka, Āvartaka, Puṣkara and Droṇa — whose thunder and light rain darken the sky and calm both Śiva and Satī. Freed from fear, Brahmā completes the remaining wedding rites amid a great festival of flowers, music, Vedic recitation and the dancing of celestial women. Pleased with Brahmā's service as officiating priest, Śiva offers him any fee, however rare; Brahmā asks only that Śiva remain permanently established, in this very bull-headed form, at that same altar, for the purification of men's sins, so that he himself may build a hermitage there and do penance in Śiva's presence — and that anyone who devotedly beholds Śiva there on the appointed day (the thirteenth of bright Caitra, under the Pūrva Phalgunī constellation, on a Sunday) shall have all sins destroyed and merit increased, and that even a woman marked by misfortune shall become blameless by that sight alone. Śiva grants this, and, forming a partial image of himself, remains established there with his wife, while he himself takes leave of Dakṣa and, mounting Satī and himself upon his bull, departs for the Himālaya, the entranced company of gods and sages following joyfully part of the way before being sent back, until Śiva and Satī reach Kailāsa, the best of mountains. Brahmā closes by promising that whoever hears this story at a wedding or at the start of any undertaking shall meet with no obstacle, and that a girl who hears it lovingly shall become blessed with happiness, good fortune, virtue and sons.
