Chapter Nineteen·Brahmā's Delusion at the Wedding·Verses 1–76
After the wedding gifts are given, Viṣṇu, together with Lakṣmī, approaches Śiva and Satī and praises them as father and mother of the universe, comparing his own union with Lakṣmī to Śiva's with Satī. Unaware of what he is about to set in motion, Viṣṇu begs Śiva to protect gods and men through Satī — and to slay anyone who should ever look upon her with desire. Śiva laughingly agrees, and Viṣṇu withdraws. Brahmā, officiating the fire-rite, tells Nārada what happened next: as Satī circled the sacred fire, her feet came briefly into view, and Brahmā — caught, he realizes with bitter irony, in the very māyā of Śiva he once tried to use against Śiva himself — is overcome with desire. Unable to look at her face directly out of shame, he contrives a thick smoke by feeding the fire wet wood, and, under its cover, stares at Satī repeatedly until, overwhelmed, he involuntarily spills his seed. Śiva, seeing everything with his divine eye, confronts Brahmā in fury — nothing in the three worlds is hidden from him — and, remembering Viṣṇu's own request, raises his trident to kill Brahmā on the spot. The sages headed by Marīci cry out in panic; the gods hymn Śiva, pleading for Brahmā's life and marveling at the incomprehensible power of his māyā; Dakṣa himself rushes to physically restrain him. Śiva declares he is only keeping the promise Viṣṇu extracted from him. Viṣṇu steps in, first praising Śiva, then arguing on practical grounds — Brahmā alone can create, and it was Brahmā who arranged for Satī's birth for Śiva's own sake — and finally on philosophical grounds: a vow of retribution against another cannot apply where there is no other, since Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva are not three separate beings but one undivided reality. Śiva presses back: Brahmā sits there, visibly distinct, before his very eyes — how can this be so? Viṣṇu, now addressed as Acyuta, answers with an extended exposition (verses 68-75) of the three gods as inseparable portions — like the head, neck and limbs of a single body — of the one formless, unqualified, eternal Śiva-Brahman, from whom everything else proceeds. Hearing this, Mahādeva becomes fully satisfied, and does not, after all, slay Brahmā.
