Chapter Eighteen · Śiva's Journey to Dakṣa's House · Verses 1–37

Brahmā returns to Kailāsa to find Śiva, out of love for Satī, doubting again and again whether she will really be given to him. Adopting an entirely worldly manner, Śiva presses Brahmā anxiously for Dakṣa's answer, confessing that separation now torments him as it would any ordinary man, since Satī is not different from himself. Brahmā reassures him with Dakṣa's own words: the daughter was fashioned for Śiva alone, this is Dakṣa's own dearest wish, Satī herself worshipped Śiva expressly to this end, and Dakṣa asks only that Śiva come to his house at an auspicious hour to receive her as a bride. Delighted, Śiva agrees to go at once with Brahmā and Nārada, and has Brahmā summon Nārada, the mind-born sages headed by Marīci, and his own gaṇas; Viṣṇu, remembered by Śiva, arrives at once with Lakṣmī on Garuḍa. On the appointed date — the thirteenth of bright Caitra, a Sunday, under the Pūrva Phalgunī constellation — Śiva sets out in procession with the full company of gods and sages, his emblematic attributes serving as ornaments for the occasion, and, mounted on his bull, swiftly reaches Dakṣa's house. Dakṣa comes out with all his household to receive them, honours every god in turn, seats Śiva in the place of highest honour, personally worships him and then Viṣṇu, Brahmā, the brahmins, the gods and the gaṇas, and, after taking counsel with the mind-born sages, asks Brahmā to officiate the marriage rites. Brahmā agrees and conducts the whole ceremony; at the auspicious moment Dakṣa gives Satī to Śambhu, and Śiva takes her hand according to the rite of marriage. All present — Brahmā, Viṣṇu, the sages, the gods, the gaṇas — bow and offer hymns of praise, and a great festival of song and dance follows, filling everyone with supreme joy. Dakṣa, having given away his daughter, feels his life's purpose fulfilled; Śiva and Śivā are both well pleased, and, as Brahmā closes the chapter, everything becomes an abode of pure auspiciousness.
