Chapter Seventeen·Śiva Grants Satī Her Boon·Verses 1–73
With her year of the Nandā vow complete, Satī, absorbed in meditation, beholds Śiva appear before her in his full radiant, five-faced, four-armed form. He offers her any boon, but modesty stops her from voicing what she wants, so — already knowing her heart — he asks anyway to hear it from her own mouth, and, when she still cannot finish her sentence, grants it himself: she shall become his wife. She only asks that he first seek her father's consent, and he agrees. Satī returns to her mother overjoyed; Śiva withdraws to his own hermitage on the Himālaya, but finds himself, to his own surprise, unable to bear the separation — the god whom Kāma's arrows could never pierce now wanders distracted, calling her name before his own attendants. He calls Brahmā to mind; Brahmā arrives with Sarasvatī, hears the whole account, and, at Śiva's request, sets out at once for Dakṣa's home. There he finds Dakṣa privately agonizing over how a father might ever presume to offer his daughter to so detached and unworldly a god — and is overjoyed to learn that Śiva himself desires the very match, and now only awaits Brahmā's word. Dakṣa readily consents. Brahmā returns to Kailāsa with the news, and the chapter closes with Dakṣa's household — and Śiva himself, still lovesick on the mountain — alike filled with satisfied longing.

Thus, having been told, and the supreme hymn to Śambhu having been offered by all the gods — hear now, O sage, with reverence, how Śivā obtained her boon.
