Chapter Sixteen·The Prayer for Śiva's Marriage·Verses 1–58
Delighted by the gods' hymn, Rudra asks Brahmā and Viṣṇu, present with their wives, why they have come. Brahmā, prompted by Viṣṇu, explains that some future demons are destined to be slain only by a son born of Śiva's own seed, or by his māyā — yet Śiva, ever compassionate, detached and free of desire, might spare even the fiercest of them, threatening the stability of creation itself. Since Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Rudra are ultimately one differentiated only by function and māyā — Brahmā born of Śiva's right side, Viṣṇu of his left, Rudra directly of his heart — and since Brahmā and Viṣṇu have themselves taken wives, Sāvitrī and Lakṣmī, for the sake of their own cosmic duties, Brahmā urges Śiva to do the same, recalling Śiva's own earlier promise to marry once manifest as Rudra. Śiva, addressed now as Īśvara, protests that marriage ill befits a renunciate yogi devoted to his own self, but agrees, out of devotion to his devotees, to fulfil his word — on his own strict terms: his wife must be capable of receiving a portion of his power, a yoginī when he is absorbed in yoga and a kāminī when he is not, must never hinder his contemplation of the eternal light, and must never distrust his word, on pain of being cast off. Brahmā and Viṣṇu then joyfully name the very woman: Umā, who has already appeared in two forms — Sarasvatī, Brahmā's wife, and Lakṣmī, Viṣṇu's — and has now taken a third form as Satī, Dakṣa's daughter, who is at that moment performing severe austerity expressly to win Śiva as her husband. They beg him to go, grant her the boon, and marry her, for the sake of all three worlds. Before Brahmā has quite finished, Viṣṇu confirms the request as his own; Śiva, laughing, says only, 'So be it,' and Brahmā and Nārada then depart, with their wives, greatly rejoicing.

And then, even before our word had quite ended, Madhusūdana, the imperishable one, addressed Īśāna, of a form assumed in sport, ever affectionate to his devotees.

O great lord, do this, showing grace upon me: marry her well, and with your gracious glance give the three worlds a protector.

Brahmā spoke: O sage, having said this, the wise and blessed Viṣṇu fell silent; then that lord, ever affectionate to his devotees, laughing, said, 'So be it.'

Then you and I, having received his leave, together with the sages and gods, went, each with our own wife, greatly rejoicing, to our own desired abodes.
