Brahmā tells Nārada how he once told the young Satī, at her father's side, to seek as husband only the one who desires her alone and whom she alone desires — one who has never taken, and never will take, another wife. Grown to youth and made exceptionally lovely by her own past austerity, Satī learns of her father Dakṣa's private wish to give her to Śiva, and, going to her mother Vīriṇī, obtains leave to undertake austerity for his sake at home. She performs the full Nandā vow across an entire year: specific tithis in each month, each with its own fast, vigil, food offering and form of worship to Śiva, culminating in disciplined eating and unbroken meditation upon him alone. Viṣṇu, Brahmā and the assembled gods and sages come to witness her austerity and find her already absorbed in meditation, arrived at a state of perfected accomplishment; astonished, they bow to her and praise her tapas, then travel on to Kailāsa to see Śiva himself. There, together with their consorts — Brahmā with Sāvitrī, Viṣṇu with Lakṣmī — they bow before Śiva and offer an extended hymn (verses 36-66), praising him as the supreme puruṣa beyond all category and description, the single, changeless seed of the universe, unknowable even to gods, sages and perfected beings, beyond gender and beyond being and non-being, the sole cause of creation, preservation and dissolution, attainable only through yoga, and, though himself free of every affliction, taking on the appearance of qualified action solely out of grace. Brahmā closes by noting that after this hymn, all the gods fell silent before Śiva, their heads bowed in devotion.

Just as the sparks of fire, and the rays of the sun, the giver of light, go forth and return again, so too is this stream of creation called a secondary, derivative thing.
