Brahmā tells Nārada how, having consoled Dakṣa a second time, he helped him father sixty daughters upon his wife, married off to Dharma, the sage Kaśyapa, the Moon, Aṅgiras, Kṛśāśva and Tārkṣya — the ancestors, Brahmā notes, of the three worlds. Afterward Dakṣa and his wife meditate on Jagadambikā with great devotion; pleased, the goddess resolves to take incarnation through Vīriṇī to fulfil the pledge she once made to Dakṣa. She comes to dwell in Dakṣa's mind, then in his wife's, and every sign of pregnancy duly appears; the household performs the puṃsavana and other rites amid great celebration, and the gods, learning she is on the way, come to praise her. In the tenth month, amid rains of flowers, calmed directions and celestial music, she is born. Dakṣa, struck by her blazing radiance, believes her to be the goddess herself and offers an extended hymn identifying her as the very power behind Brahmā's creation, Viṣṇu's preservation and Rudra's destruction, the mother of the three gods, worshipped under many names. Then, speaking so that her own mother cannot hear, the goddess confirms to Dakṣa that his wish is fulfilled and that he should continue his devotion; she then assumes, through her own māyā, the ordinary cries and manner of an infant, so that the household take her for a natural child. The gods arrive with throngs of sages to celebrate, praising Dakṣa and Vīriṇī above all, and at their bidding Dakṣa names her Umā. The chapter closes on her childhood: nursed and reared with great love, growing daily like the waxing moon, already endowed with every virtue, drawing Śiva's image among her playmates and humming songs that call Sthāṇu and Rudra to mind, and pleasing her parents constantly through her devotion to them.
