Śrī Rāma, still speaking to Satī, tells how Śambhu once had Viśvakarmā build a hall in his own cow-pen, installed Hari there with full royal rites, gave him the whole of his own sovereignty, boons, threefold power and his own māyā, and made his realm famed as Goloka, promising to watch over whatever avatars Hari should take — four of which are now Rāma, Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna. Rāma explains why he has come to the forest and departs; Brahmā's narration then resumes: Satī, walking back to Śiva, is stricken with remorse for having disobeyed him and tested Rāma; questioned by Śiva, she denies it, though he reads the truth regardless. He recalls an old vow, made under Hari's pressure, that he would break if he loved Satī as before; grieving, he renounces her in his mind alone, without breaking the vow, and sets off for Kailāsa. A voice from the sky praises his vow; Satī, questioning him, is not told its content, but perceives by meditating on him that he has renounced her, and grieves. Śiva keeps the vow secret and, after a long interval, restores her joy through many pleasant tales and a further play, still without breaking his word — which Brahmā says should occasion no wonder, since sages hold that Satī and Śiva, joined like word and meaning, cannot truly be parted except by their own will in play.

O great sage, thus a great span of time passed for those two lords, who, following the play of the world, had each taken up a body of their own choosing.

Who can truly know, in ultimate terms, the conduct of Śivā and Śiva? Those two, sporting always at their own will, ever act as they choose.

Satī and Śiva are ever surely joined together, indeed, like word and its own meaning; separation between them is impossible, save when it comes about by their own will alone.
