Chapter 26 · Dakṣa's Opposition to Śiva · Verses 1–54

Brahmā tells Nārada of a great sacrifice at Prayāga, attended by sages, gods, and Dakṣa. When Rudra arrived with Satī and was honoured by all but did not rise to bow to Dakṣa — who had shown him no honour either — Dakṣa flew into a rage and publicly cursed Rudra as unfit for sacrifice, barred from the four social orders. Nandīśvara rebuked Dakṣa for it and was cursed in turn, along with all of Rudra's attendants, condemned to heretical, degraded lives outside the Veda; Nandī cursed Dakṣa's brahmins back, and Dakṣa himself to bear a goat's face. Sadāśiva himself then calmed Nandīśvara, explaining that no true curse can touch one who is himself the Veda, the sacrifice, the sacrificer, and everyone at once, and that Nandī's anger should give way to right knowledge. Nandī grew peaceful and Śiva departed for his own abode, but Dakṣa went home nursing his rage, and from that day turned against Śiva's worshippers — the seed of the deeper enmity Brahmā goes on to tell.

"Long ago, O Nārada, there took place, by proper rite, a great sacrifice of all the sages and great souls gathered together at Prayāga.

Who is this? Who are you? Who are these others? — in truth, I alone am all of it. Consider this with your own understanding: you have cursed these twice-born ones in vain.

Śiva too, having quickly instructed that attendant of his, dearer to him than life, then went from there to his own abode with his attendants, filled with joy.

Dakṣa too, still possessed by rage, surrounded by those brahmins, went to his own abode, his mind wholly given over to enmity toward Śiva.

Recalling, again and again, how Rudra had been cursed on that occasion, Dakṣa, filled with the greatest rage, that dull-witted one, wholly abandoning his faith, became one given to reviling Śiva's worshippers.

Dear one, having thus been addressed by Śambhu, the supreme Self, Dakṣa's wicked mind remained as it was; now hear from me, and I shall tell of his further, deeper malice.
