Brahmā tells Nārada of a great sacrifice at Prayāga, attended by sages, gods, and Dakṣa. When Rudra arrived with Satī and was honoured by all but did not rise to bow to Dakṣa — who had shown him no honour either — Dakṣa flew into a rage and publicly cursed Rudra as unfit for sacrifice, barred from the four social orders. Nandīśvara rebuked Dakṣa for it and was cursed in turn, along with all of Rudra's attendants, condemned to heretical, degraded lives outside the Veda; Nandī cursed Dakṣa's brahmins back, and Dakṣa himself to bear a goat's face. Sadāśiva himself then calmed Nandīśvara, explaining that no true curse can touch one who is himself the Veda, the sacrifice, the sacrificer, and everyone at once, and that Nandī's anger should give way to right knowledge. Nandī grew peaceful and Śiva departed for his own abode, but Dakṣa went home nursing his rage, and from that day turned against Śiva's worshippers — the seed of the deeper enmity Brahmā goes on to tell.
