Brahmā tells Nārada of the great sacrifice Dakṣa began at Kanakhala, attended in splendour by sages, gods, Brahmā, and Viṣṇu himself. Deluded by Śiva's māyā, Dakṣa honoured every guest but, deeming Śiva unfit as a skull-bearer, invited neither him nor his own daughter Satī. When Dadhīci noticed Śiva's absence, he urged Dakṣa to fetch him at once, praising his power to make even the inauspicious auspicious; Dakṣa answered with scorn, dismissing Rudra as ill-born, uncouth, and unnecessary now that Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and the rest had come. Dadhīci warned that without Śiva the sacrifice was no sacrifice, and would bring Dakṣa's ruin, then left at once with the other Śiva-devotees, cursing him as they went. Dakṣa, unmoved and pleased at their departure, urged the remaining priests to press on regardless — and, still deluded, they did.
