Śiva continues, giving Viṣṇu his charge to protect creation, destroy its enemies, and take manifold avatāras, declaring the non-difference of Viṣṇu, Rudra and himself, and the ruin awaiting whoever, devoted to one, reviles the other; a long excursus follows on the relative days and lifespans of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Rudra, reckoned against Sadāśiva's own breath, itself beyond counting. Śiva then commits Viṣṇu to Brahmā's care, and Viṣṇu, in reply, pledges obedience and unbroken meditation, begging pardon for any excess in their quarrel; Śiva forgives him, blesses both with a touch, teaches them various dharmas, and vanishes before their eyes — after which, the chapter closes, the worship of the liṅga becomes established in the world, the liṅga itself being Śiva, its vedi the Goddess, and to serve near it or recite this very account bringing great and inexpressible merit.

Whoever recites daily this account of the liṅga, in the presence of the liṅga, becomes, in six months, of the very form of Śiva — of this no doubt is to be entertained.

And whoever performs any service at all near the liṅga — of the merit-fruit of that I am not able to speak, great sage.
