Chapter 32 · The Envoy's Journey to Śaṅkhacūḍa · Verses 1–35

Mahārudra Śiva resolves, by the gods' wish, to slay Śaṅkhacūḍa, and sends Citraratha (Puṣpadanta), lord of the gandharvas, as his envoy to Śaṅkhacūḍa's magnificent city, more splendid than Indra's own. Puṣpadanta passes the twelve gates of Śaṅkhacūḍa's palace and finds him enthroned amid an assembly of heroes, attended by countless dānavas. Delivering Śiva's message, he demands that Śaṅkhacūḍa restore the gods' kingdom and offices at once, or else meet Rudra in battle; Śiva declares himself the refuge of the gods who have taken shelter with him and vows to slay Śaṅkhacūḍa without hesitation, while affirming that his own word is never false. Śaṅkhacūḍa, laughing, refuses to surrender the kingdom, declaring that the earth belongs to the brave and that he will fight; and, reasoning that the hero attacked first is accounted the lowest, he resolves to march against Rudra himself at dawn, bidding the envoy carry back this defiant answer. Puṣpadanta then warns him that he cannot stand even before Śaṅkara's lesser attendants, still less before Śaṅkara himself, who is the Supreme Soul, Lord of all lords, obeyed by Indra and all the gods, Prajāpatis, siddhas, sages and nāga-lords, master even of Hari and Brahmā, at once without qualities and with qualities, the full form of Śiva who dissolves the worlds by a mere frown, refuge of the good and destroyer of the wicked, changeless and beyond the beyond — and he urges Śaṅkhacūḍa, for his own good, to return the gods' kingdom rather than risk disaster. Deluded by what is destined, Śaṅkhacūḍa nonetheless insists he will not yield the kingdom without battle, declares that the whole moving and unmoving universe is subject to Time, and sends the envoy back to tell Rudra to do as he sees fit. Puṣpadanta then returns to his own lord and faithfully reports the entire exchange.
