अथ त्रयस्त्रिंशोऽध्यायः
Having heard Śaṅkhacūḍa's defiant reply relayed by the messenger, Giriśa commanded Vīrabhadra, Nandin, Kṣetrapāla, the eight Bhairavas, and all his gaṇas to arm themselves and set out with the two Kumāras, while Bhadrakālī too was to march to battle with her own army, and Śiva himself declared he would set out at once to slay Śaṅkhacūḍa. Thus commanded, Maheśāna set out with his army, and all the heroic gaṇas followed him in great joy; Skanda and Gaṇeśa, lords of the whole host, came armed to Śiva's side. Sanatkumāra then names a great array of gaṇa-lords — Vīrabhadra, Nandī, Mahākāla, and a host of others — and recounts, name by name, the vast numbers of troops, reckoned in crores and thousands of crores, that each commanded, until an innumerable host of gaṇas, thousand-armed, matted-locked, crescent-crowned, blue-throated and three-eyed, adorned with rudrākṣa and ash, resembling Brahmā, Indra, and Viṣṇu in splendor and skilled in war, ranging over earth, netherworld, sky, and the seven heavens, set out for the encounter with the dānavas. The eight Bhairavas, the eleven Rudras, the eight Vasus, Indra, the twelve Ādityas, Agni, the Moon, Viśvakarmā, the Aśvins, Kubera, Yama, Nirṛti, Nalakūbara, Vāyu, Varuṇa, Budha, Maṅgala, the other planets, and Kāmadeva, along with Ugradaṃṣṭra, Ugradaṇḍa, Koraṭa, and Koṭabha, all joined the host. The hundred-armed goddess Bhadrakālī Maheśvarī herself appeared, seated on a jewelled chariot, clad and adorned in red, dancing, laughing, and singing with joy, granting fearlessness to her own and terror to the foe, bearing a monstrous tongue a yojana long, a vast skull-bowl, a sky-touching trident, a yojana-long spear, and a whole armory of maces, discuses, swords, and celestial weapons — the Vaiṣṇava, Vāruṇa, Vāyavya, Nārāyaṇa, Gāndharva, Brahma, Gāruḍa, Pārjanya, Pāśupata, Jṛmbhaṇa, Pārvata, Mahāvīra, Saura, Kālakāla, Mahānala, Māheśvara, Yāmya, and Sammohana weapons among a hundred others — attended by three crore yoginīs and three crore fearsome ḍākinīs, and surrounded by bhūtas, pretas, piśācas, kūṣmāṇḍas, brahmarākṣasas, vetālas, rākṣasas, yakṣas, and kinnaras. Skanda, amid this throng, bowed to Candraśekhara and took his place at his father's side by his command. Then Śambhu, having gathered his whole army, set out fearlessly, as Rudra, for battle against Śaṅkhacūḍa, and halted at the foot of a lovely banyan tree on the bank of the river Candrabhāgā, there to bring about the deliverance of the gods.दूतके द्वारा लाया गया शङ्खचूडका उद्दंड उत्तर सुनकर गिरीश क्रोधित हुए और वीरभद्र, नन्दिन्, क्षेत्रपाल, अष्ट भैरव तथा समस्त गणोंको शस्त्रसज्जित होकर दोनों कुमारोंके साथ निकलनेकी आज्ञा दी; भद्रकालीको भी अपनी सेनाके साथ युद्धके लिये जानेको कहा, और स्वयं शङ्खचूडके वधके लिये तुरन्त निकल पड़नेकी घोषणा की। ऐसी आज्ञा देकर महेशान अपनी सेनाके साथ निकल पड़े और समस्त वीरगण हर्षित होकर उनके पीछे चले; सम्पूर्ण सेनाके स्वामी स्कन्द और गणेश भी शस्त्रसज्जित होकर शिवके समीप पहुँचे। सनत्कुमार तब वीरभद्र, नन्दी, महाकाल आदि अनेक गणेश्वरोंके नाम तथा उनकी करोड़ों एवं सहस्र करोड़ोंमें गिनी जानेवाली विशाल सेनाओंकी संख्या एक-एक करके गिनाते हैं, यावत् सहस्र भुजाओं, जटामुकुट, चन्द्ररेखा, नीलकण्ठ तथा त्रिनेत्रसे युक्त, रुद्राक्ष एवं भस्मसे विभूषित, ब्रह्मा-इन्द्र-विष्णुके सदृश तेजस्वी तथा युद्धमें प्रवीण असंख्य गण, पृथ्वी, पाताल, आकाश तथा सातों स्वर्गोंमें विचरण करते हुए, दानवोंसे युद्धके लिये निकल पड़े। आठों भैरव, ग्यारह रुद्र, आठों वसु, इन्द्र, बारह आदित्य, अग्नि, चन्द्रमा, विश्वकर्मा, दोनों अश्विनीकुमार, कुबेर, यम, निर्ऋति, नलकूबर, वायु, वरुण, बुध, मङ्गल, अन्य ग्रह तथा कामदेवके साथ ही उग्रदंष्ट्र, उग्रदण्ड, कोरट तथा कोटभ भी इस सेनामें सम्मिलित हुए। स्वयं सौ भुजाओंवाली देवी भद्रकाली महेश्वरी रत्नमय विमानपर आरूढ़, लाल वस्त्र एवं आभूषणोंसे सुसज्जित, नृत्य-गायन करती तथा अपने भक्तोंको अभय और शत्रुओंको भय देती हुई प्रकट हुईं; वे एक योजन लम्बी विकराल जिह्वा, विशाल खर्पर, आकाशस्पर्शी त्रिशूल, योजन-लम्बी शक्ति तथा वैष्णवास्त्र, वारुणास्त्र, वायव्यास्त्र, नारायणास्त्र, गान्धर्वास्त्र, ब्रह्मास्त्र, गारुडास्त्र, पार्जन्यास्त्र, पाशुपतास्त्र, जृम्भणास्त्र, पार्वतास्त्र, महावीरास्त्र, सौरास्त्र, कालकालास्त्र, महानलास्त्र, माहेश्वरास्त्र, याम्यास्त्र तथा सम्मोहनास्त्र सहित सैकड़ों दिव्यास्त्र धारण किये हुए, तीन करोड़ योगिनियों तथा तीन करोड़ भयंकर डाकिनियोंके साथ, तथा भूत-प्रेत-पिशाच-कूष्माण्ड-ब्रह्मराक्षस-वेताल-राक्षस-यक्ष-किन्नरोंसे घिरी हुई वहाँ उपस्थित हुईं। स्कन्द भी इन सबसे घिरे हुए चन्द्रशेखरको प्रणामकर उनकी आज्ञासे पिताके समीप सहायकके रूपमें स्थित हो गये। तदनन्तर शम्भुने अपनी सम्पूर्ण सेना एकत्रकर निर्भय होकर शङ्खचूडसे युद्धके लिये प्रस्थान किया और चन्द्रभागा नदीके तटपर एक मनोहर वटवृक्षके नीचे देवताओंके उद्धारके लिये ठहर गये।
