Vyāsa blesses Sanatkumāra and asks what the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa did after Śiva's messenger departed. Sanatkumāra relates that Śaṅkhacūḍa went within to his wife Tulasī and told her that, summoned by Śambhu's messenger, he was resolved to go to war, and asked her leave; disregarding the warning, he then spent the night in joyful love-play with her. Rising before dawn, performing his morning rites, and giving lavish gifts, he made his son king over all the dānavas and entrusted to that son his queen and his entire kingdom with its wealth. He consoled his weeping wife, who tried to dissuade him from going, and then, armed for war, summoned and instructed his commander-in-chief, ordering the daityas and dānavas, the Kaṅkas, fifty clans of mighty asuras, a hundred clans of the Dhaumras, and the Kālakeyas, Mauryas, Daurhṛdas and Kālakas to march out at once against Śambhu and Rudra. Having so commanded, the powerful lord of the dānavas set out with his vast army; his own commander, a great chariot-warrior skilled in the science of war, arrayed a circular battle-formation of countless akṣauhiṇīs and came forth from the camp, fearsome to warriors. Mounting a jewelled aerial car with his elders placed before him, Śaṅkhacūḍa journeyed toward the bank of the river Puṣpabhadrā, where stands the auspicious imperishable banyan and the hermitage that grants perfection to the siddhas — near the abode of Kapila in the sacred land of Bhārata, between the western ocean and the Malaya mountain, north of Śrīśaila and south of Gandhamādana. That crystal-bright river, a beloved bride of the salt ocean and companion of Sarasvatī, flows down from the Himālaya and, passing Mount Gomanta on her left, enters the western ocean. Arriving there, Śaṅkhacūḍa beheld the army of Śiva arrayed before him.
