Sanatkumāra relates that when Śambhu heard the dejected words of Hari and Brahmā, he smiled and told them to cast off all fear: he knew the whole account of Śaṅkhacūḍa in truth, for it began with Sudāmā, a cowherd devoted to Kṛṣṇa. By Śiva's own command, Viṣṇu, having taken Kṛṣṇa's form, once dwelt in the cow-pasture of Goloka; there Sudāmā, growing proud, thought himself independent and sported freely, until Śiva's māyā deepened his delusion and, withdrawing his companions' right understanding, caused a curse to fall upon them. When Śiva then lifted that māyā, Sudāmā and the others, restored to clear judgment, came before him in shame, begging protection; Śiva, pleased with them, told Kṛṣṇa to return to his own realm with Rādhā and the attendant, promising that the curse would in time be lifted, though the attendant would indeed become a dānava on earth. Believing all things — himself included — dependent on Śiva and never truly free, Sudāmā, through a curse of Rādhā's, became lord of the dānavas: he is the very Śaṅkhacūḍa who, deluded by Śiva's māyā and aided by wicked counselors, now afflicts the gods, though the danger is not to be feared, since Śiva himself remains his ruler. As Śiva finished telling this to Hari and Brahmā, Kṛṣṇa himself, together with Rādhā, his attendants and the gopas, arrived to conciliate him; bowing and praising Śiva with full knowledge of his true nature, Kṛṣṇa confessed his offence, praised Śiva as the source and sustainer of all things, and admitted that he and his beloved companion had incurred the fruit of delusion — the curse that had turned his dearest attendant Sudāmā into the god-hating dānava Śaṅkhacūḍa, who had driven the gods with Indra from their offices and scattered them to the ten quarters; Kṛṣṇa and Brahmā had therefore come to Śiva for refuge, begging him to lift the curse. Pleased, Śiva told Kṛṣṇa to be free of fear, for all this had been his own doing in grace; he bade Kṛṣṇa return to his post, assuring him that in the Varāha-kalpa, with youthful Rādhā, Sudāmā would complete the term of the curse and be restored, but that meanwhile, as Śaṅkhacūḍa, he was tormenting the world and its defeat lay only with Rudra of Kailāsa — Śiva's own perfect form, one with him in every way, so that whoever set the two apart would go to hell and suffer even in this life, bereft of offspring. Bowing repeatedly, Kṛṣṇa and Brahmā then departed for Vaikuṇṭha and Satyaloka, reported the whole matter to the gods, and, taking them along, went to Kailāsa, where all praised Maheśa, the beloved of Pārvatī, with devotion and folded hands, and the gods begged him to slay Śaṅkhacūḍa, the destroyer of the gods who had stripped them of their offices and made even heaven unreachable to them, and to free Indra from fear. Śambhu, ever affectionate to his devotees, smiled and told Hari, Brahmā, and the gods to return, without any doubt, to their own abodes, for he himself would slay Śaṅkhacūḍa together with his host; hearing this nectar-like assurance, all rejoiced as though the dānava were already destroyed, and Hari went to Vaikuṇṭha, Brahmā to Satyaloka, and the gods, having bowed to Maheśa, returned each to his own place.

Then, having heard the words of the greatly dejected Hari and Vidhi, Śambhu spoke, smiling, in a voice as deep as the roar of clouds.
