Chapter 30 · The Gods' Hymn of Praise to the God of Gods · Verses 1–40

Sanatkumāra relates to Vyāsa how Viṣṇu, together with Brahmā, went at once to the supremely divine and immaterial Śivaloka. Joyful, they entered that gem-studded, resplendent world and came to its first gate, wondrous and attended by gaṇas, where heroic doorkeepers — five-faced, three-eyed, fair of form, bearing tridents, adorned with ash and rudrākṣa — sat upon jeweled thrones; bowing humbly, Brahmā told them their purpose, to behold the Lord. Given leave, they passed through gate after gate — each more delightful and radiant than the last — announcing their errand afresh to each gatekeeper, until, having passed through fifteen gates in all, Brahmā reached the great gate and beheld Nandin; duly honoured and praised, they were given leave by him and entered within with joy. There they beheld on high the resplendent assembly hall of Śambhu, thronged with gleaming, richly adorned attendants bearing forms like Maheśvara's own — ten-armed, five-faced, three-eyed, blue-throated. The hall itself is described at length: shaped like the orb of the full moon, four-cornered and lovely, resplendent with garlands of the finest gems and diamonds, fashioned of priceless jewels and adorned with lotus petals, variegated with pictures wrought in ruby, fashioned of padmarāga gems by Śaṅkara's own will, furnished with hundreds of steps of Syamantaka gem, hung with sandalwood sprays bound in golden thread, encircled by sapphire pillars, perfumed by fragrant breezes, a thousand yojanas in extent and thronged with servants. There Viṣṇu, lord of the gods, beheld Śaṅkara together with Ambā, seated in the midst as the moon amid the stars, upon a throne of priceless gems — crowned, adorned with jeweled garlands, his whole body smeared with ash, holding a lotus for play, watching with a smile the song and dance performed before him, tranquil and greatly rejoicing, the beloved of Umā, having partaken of the fragrant betel she had given him, attended by gaṇas with white chowries and praised by siddhas with bowed necks. Having beheld him thus — transcending the guṇas, the supreme lord, begetter of the three gods, all-pervading, undifferentiated and formless yet possessed of form by his own will, free of māyā, unborn, the primeval lord of māyā, higher than the highest, beyond Prakṛti and Puruṣa, utterly complete and impartial — Viṣṇu and Brahmā, with hands folded in reverence, extolled him. Addressing him as the God of gods, the Great God, the Supreme Brahman, Lord of all, transcending the three guṇas, undisturbed, begetter of the three gods, they declared themselves come for refuge, sorrowful and tormented by Śaṅkhacūḍa; they revealed that the ruler of Goloka, Kṛṣṇa, is established there by Śiva's own will, and that his foremost attendant, Sudāmā, bound by fate and cursed by Rādhā, had become the demon Śaṅkhacūḍa, by whom they had been driven out and stripped of their offices, now wandering the earth. Only Śiva, they said, could slay him; let him do so and restore happiness to the worlds. They praised him as at once qualityless and possessed of qualities, higher than Prakṛti and Puruṣa; as Brahmā the creator through rajas, Viṣṇu the preserver through sattva, Rudra the destroyer through tamas, and, beyond the three guṇas, the fourth — Śiva, whose very nature is light; as the one who by his own dispensation dwells in Goloka as protector of cows, in whose pasture Kṛṣṇa sports day and night; as the cause and master of all — Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Īśvara himself — unchanging, ever witness, the Supreme Soul, the highest Lord, helper of the destitute, protector of the wretched, friend of the poor, lord of the three worlds, ever affectionate to those who take refuge in him. They begged him to be gracious and deliver them, declaring themselves wholly dependent on his will. Having said this, Hari and Brahmā then bowed to Śiva and, with hands joined in humility, fell silent.

gatvā tadaiva savidhistadā vyāsa rameśvaraḥ | śivalokaṃ mahādivyaṃ nirādhāramabhautikam ||

Doubtful readingThis line's second word functions here as a compound naming Brahmā (Vidhi) as Viṣṇu's companion on the journey, not as the ordinary adverb meaning 'duly, with due rite' — the two readings look identical on the page, and the surrounding narrative (Brahmā and Viṣṇu travelling together throughout the chapter) settles it in favour of the former.
