Chapter 29 · The Kingship of Śaṅkhacūḍa and His Former Birth · Verses 1–59

When Śaṅkhacūḍa returned home married, the demons and dānavas rejoiced; all the asuras, together with their preceptor Śukra, gathered around him in reverence, and the son of Dambha bowed to Śukra with great devotion. Śukra related to him the whole ancient account of the gods and demons — their innate enmity, the asuras' defeats, the gods' victories, and how Bṛhaspati (Jīva) had aided the gods — and then, with the consent of all the asuras, held a festival and made Śaṅkhacūḍa their overlord; the joyful asuras offered him gifts. Thus crowned, the heroic and mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa set out with a vast army of daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas to conquer Indra's city, shining among his followers like the king of planets. Hearing of his approach, Indra made ready with all the gods to resist him, and a tumultuous battle broke out that thrilled the brave and terrified the cowardly, filled with the roars of warriors and the sound of martial music. The gods at first fought fiercely and the asuras were routed and fled in fear, but Śaṅkhacūḍa himself then entered the battle with a lion's roar and swiftly wrought havoc among the gods, who, unable to bear his splendor, fled and took refuge, wretched and dependent, in mountain caves, like oceans stripped of their radiance. That valiant son of Dambha then seized the offices and sacrificial shares of the gods, conquered all the worlds, and himself became Indra, ruler of the whole universe; he took over the offices of Kubera, the Moon, the Sun, Agni, Yama, and Vāyu, and became overlord of gods, asuras, dānavas, rākṣasas, gandharvas, nāgas, kinnaras, the dwellers of the nether realms, the three worlds, and all besides. Thus, as the great overlord of kings, Śaṅkhacūḍa ruled all the worlds for a long span of years: in his kingdom there was no famine, no plague, no evil planetary influence, no anguish and no disease, and the subjects were ever happy; the earth yielded crops though unploughed, herbs and trees were ever fruitful, the oceans abounded in gems, and the rivers ran with fair water. Except for the gods, all beings, steadfast each in their own duty across the four varṇas and āśramas, lived happily under his rule; only the gods remained unhappy, on account of their ancient fraternal rivalry. Sanatkumāra then reveals that this mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa was in truth Kṛṣṇa's own supreme friend, a virtuous soul devoted to Kṛṣṇa-bhakti and an eternal dweller of Goloka, who, though he had taken a dānava's birth through an earlier curse, never had the mind of a demon. The defeated gods, stripped of their kingdom, took counsel with the sages and went to Brahmā's assembly; recounting their distress to him, they were consoled by Brahmā, who led them all to Vaikuṇṭha. There they beheld Viṣṇu — four-armed, crowned, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus, clad in yellow, garlanded, and attended by Sanandana and the other siddhas — and, bowing with joined palms, praised him with devotion and wept before him. Viṣṇu asked Brahmā why he had come to that world so hard for yogis to reach, and Brahmā, humbly bowing again and again, related the whole account of Śaṅkhacūḍa's deeds and the gods' distress. Hari, the all-knowing one, smiled on hearing this and revealed the secret to Brahmā: above all worlds lies the supreme Śivaloka, where Śambhu, the Supreme Brahman and highest Lord, reigns as governor even of Prakṛti and Puruṣa, bearer of the three powers, at once without qualities and with qualities, the supreme light in his own form; from him were born the three agents of creation, Viṣṇu, Brahmā, and Hara, endowed with the guṇas beginning with sattva. That Supreme Soul sports there with Umā, free from māyā, ordaining both the eternal and the transient; and near his realm lies Goloka, Śiva's own cow-pasture, where by Śiva's will Kṛṣṇa — Viṣṇu's own form — dwells to protect the cows, ever happy in that appointed task, together with his consort Rādhā, the supreme, fifth form of Prakṛti, and with the many gopas and gopīs, their own offspring, devoted always to play, who follow Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. Viṣṇu explains that Śaṅkhacūḍa is in truth that very cowherd, now deluded through Śambhu's own play and, needlessly, through a curse, fallen into a demon's birth that brings him suffering; but his death by Rudra's trident was ordained by Kṛṣṇa long ago, after which, giving up his body, he will become an attendant of Śiva. Knowing this, Viṣṇu tells Brahmā there is no cause for fear: let him go for refuge to Śaṅkara, who will at once grant well-being, and let Viṣṇu himself, Brahmā, and all the immortals remain undisturbed. Having said this, Viṣṇu, together with Brahmā, set out for Śivaloka, his heart fixed on Śambhu, the lord of all, ever affectionate to his devotees.
