Chapter 28 · Śaṅkhacūḍa's Austerity and His Marriage to Tulasī · Verses 1–41

Sanatkumāra continues: by Jaigīṣavya's teaching, Śaṅkhacūḍa performs long austerity at Puṣkara, reciting with controlled senses the brahma-knowledge given by his guru. Brahmā, preceptor of the worlds, comes to grant him a boon; Śaṅkhacūḍa bows and praises him, and begs invincibility over the gods, which Brahmā grants with a glad heart. Brahmā further gives him the divine Śrī-Kṛṣṇa armor, the most auspicious of auspicious things and a granter of victory everywhere, and instructs him to go to Badarī and marry, there by that very place, Tulasī, the daughter of Dharmadhvaja, who is performing austerity out of desire for such a union; having said this, Brahmā vanishes on the instant. Śaṅkhacūḍa binds the armor about his neck and journeys, joyful and his desire fulfilled through austerity, to Badarikāśrama, where he comes upon Tulasī by chance, engaged in her penance. Struck by her beauty, grace, and adornment, he sits near her and questions her identity; she tells him she is Dharmadhvaja's daughter, an ascetic dwelling in that penance-grove, and bids him go on his way, adding that womankind is a bewildering, poison-like, reprehensible illusion even to Brahmā and the like, and a chain for those who succumb to it. Falling silent, she smiles, and Śaṅkhacūḍa replies that her words are not wholly true; he calls her foremost among chaste women, denies any impure motive on either side, and declares that he has come by Brahmā's own command to marry her by the gāndharva rite. He reveals himself as Śaṅkhacūḍa, terror of the gods, of Danu's lineage and son of Dambha, but once, long ago, the gopa Sudāmā and a companion of Hari; now, through Rādhikā's curse, he is lord of the dānavas, yet remembers his past births by Kṛṣṇa's power. Hearing this truthful account, Tulasī, pleased and smiling, declares herself won over in this trial of character, praising as blessed the man not overcome by a woman, and condemning as ever impure — never purified by the ordinary periods that cleanse a brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, or śūdra after a birth or death, and unaccepted in his offerings by ancestors or gods — the man conquered by a woman; of what worth, she says, is any knowledge, austerity, or charity in one whose mind is stolen by women? She explains that she tested Śaṅkhacūḍa only to learn his true power and understanding, since a woman should choose her husband only after testing her suitor. As she speaks, Brahmā himself arrives and bids Śaṅkhacūḍa stop merely conversing and take her at once in gāndharva marriage, calling the two of them a jewel among men and a jewel among women whose union will be virtuous; he asks who would forsake such rare, unopposed happiness, calling it bestial to do so, and asks why Tulasī should still test so virtuous a subduer of gods, asuras, and dānavas. He bids the two of them sport together always, wandering through all the worlds as they wish, and blesses them with a destined future — Śaṅkhacūḍa will attain Śrī Kṛṣṇa again in Goloka and the four-armed form in Vaikuṇṭha, and Tulasī will join him there after his death. Having given this blessing, Brahmā returns to his own abode; Śaṅkhacūḍa takes Tulasī in gāndharva marriage, and, having thus wed her, goes to his father's dwelling, where he lives happily with his bride in a delightful chamber.

A śūdra becomes pure in a month — such indeed is the Veda's ordinance; but a man conquered by a woman is never pure, except through the burning of the funeral pyre.
