Sanatkumāra tells Vyāsa another sacred exploit of Śambhu: how the heroic dānava Śaṅkhacūḍa, a thorn to the gods, was slain by Śiva in battle with his trident. He traces the lineage: the sage Kaśyapa, son of Marīci who was son of the Creator, received thirteen daughters from Dakṣa, from whom the whole moving and unmoving world arose. Among Kaśyapa's wife Danu's many powerful sons was Viprachitti, whose son was the righteous, Viṣṇu-devoted Dambha. Having no heroic son, and taking Śukrācārya as his preceptor, Dambha obtained the Kṛṣṇa-mantra and performed supreme austerity at Puṣkara for a hundred thousand years, so intense that a blazing, unbearable radiance issued from his head and spread everywhere, scorching all the gods, sages, and Manus, who went for refuge to Brahmā. Brahmā, hearing their plight, took them to Vaikuṇṭha to inform Viṣṇu, and all bowed and praised him, telling of their torment and begging protection. Viṣṇu reassured them with a smile that there was no cause for fear or coming dissolution, explaining that the source was his own devotee Dambha performing austerity in desire of a son, whom he would pacify with a boon; reassured, the gods returned to their abodes. Viṣṇu then went to Puṣkara, consoled Dambha as he muttered his mantra, and bade him ask for a boon. Dambha, seeing Viṣṇu before him, bowed and praised him repeatedly, then begged for a son devoted to him, of great strength and valor, a hero unconquerable even by the gods, who would conquer the three worlds. Viṣṇu granted the boon, turned him back from his fierce austerity, and vanished. Dambha, his purpose fulfilled, returned home, and in a short time his wife conceived and shone with great radiance. Into her womb entered the gopa Sudāmā, foremost of Kṛṣṇa's companions, who had been cursed by Rādhā. In due course she gave birth to a radiant son; his father performed the birth-rites with many sages present amid great celebration, and named him Śaṅkhacūḍa on an auspicious day. The boy grew in his father's house like the waxing moon, became learned and resplendent even in childhood, and through his play continually delighted his parents, becoming dear to all, especially to those of his family.
