Chapter 26 · The Goddess's Hymn and the Dispelling of Viṣṇu's Delusion · Verses 1–61

Vyāsa, having heard the great and auspicious Śaiva tale, asks Sanatkumāra to now relate, out of affection, what Viṣṇu did after deluding Vṛndā and where he went. Sanatkumāra tells how, while Brahmā and the other gods remained silent, Maheśvara, ever gracious to those who take refuge in him, spoke: Jālandhara, though his own portion, was slain for the gods' sake, and this is ever his sport, though he himself is unchanging. Brahmā and the gods then joyfully reported to Rudra what had happened to Viṣṇu: though protected from Jālandhara's fear, a new trouble has arisen — Vṛndā, deluded by Viṣṇu, has burned to ashes and attained the supreme state, and Viṣṇu himself now sits bewildered by her beauty, smeared with the ashes of her pyre, deluded by Śiva's own māyā, and unmoved even by the efforts of assembled siddhas and sages to rouse him; the gods beg Śiva to show mercy and awaken Viṣṇu, since the whole moving and unmoving world is under his control. Sanatkumāra relates that the playful, self-governing Maheśa then explained that his māyā, which deludes every world, is exceedingly hard to overcome, and that it was this power — the great goddess Umā, mother of the three gods, proclaimed as Mūlaprakṛti, of the form of Girijā — by which Viṣṇu himself was deluded and made subject to desire; he tells the gods to seek refuge in this refuge-granting, all-desire-granting māyā called Śivā, and to praise her, for if she is pleased she will accomplish everything. Having said this, Śambhu vanished with his hosts, and the gods, by his command, mentally praised the Mūlaprakṛti who is affectionate to her devotees, hymning her as the source of the three guṇas and of creation, preservation, and dissolution, the ruler of the twenty-three tattvas whose form and deeds even the three worlds cannot know, and the protector of those devoted to her from poverty, delusion, and calamity. Continuing their praise before her — recounting that Jālandhara was slain, that Vṛndā was made to forsake her own virtue and, entering the fire, attained the supreme state, and that they have all now come for refuge to her and to Śambhu, both devoted to the deliverance of their devotees, while Viṣṇu remains bewildered and fallen from knowledge — the gods beheld in the sky a great sphere of splendor pervading every direction with flame, from which they heard a wish-granting voice: it declared itself to be one goddess existing threefold, as Gaurī, Lakṣmī, and Surā, embodying the guṇas rajas, sattva, and tamas, and it instructed them to go with reverence into the presence of those three, who, pleased by its own command, would grant what the gods desired. As they listened, the voice and its splendor vanished, and the wondering gods bowed to Gaurī, Lakṣmī, and Surā and praised them with great devotion in many forms of speech; the three goddesses then appeared before them in their own wondrous radiance, and, moved by the gods' devotion and their stated purpose, gave them seeds, instructing them to scatter these wherever Viṣṇu was, so that the gods' task would be accomplished — for the powers of Rudra, Viṣṇu, and the Creator are themselves of the nature of the three guṇas. The gods gathered the seeds and went to Viṣṇu, scattering them on the ground of Vṛndā's funeral pyre, where portions of Śiva's own power came to dwell in remembrance of the goddesses; from the seeds sprang three plants — Dhātrī, Mālatī, and Tulasī — each traced to one of the goddess's threefold forms and guṇas. Viṣṇu, seeing these plants in the form of women, was overcome with passion and pleaded with them, and Tulasī and Dhātrī looked upon him with equal passion; the woman born from the seed that Lakṣmī herself had earlier offered through her māyā grew jealous of the other and came to bear the disparaged name Barbarī, while Dhātrī and Tulasī, through that same passion, remained ever dear to Viṣṇu. His sorrow now forgotten, Viṣṇu went joyfully with the two of them to Vaikuṇṭha, honored by all the gods; it is said that in the month of Kārtika, Dhātrī and Tulasī are especially dear to all the gods and above all to Viṣṇu, Tulasī being the most blessed of all and pleasing to every god except Gaṇeśa. Seeing Hari established once more in Vaikuṇṭha, the gods bowed, praised him, and returned each to his own abode, and Viṣṇu himself, freed from delusion and restored to clear understanding, became happy again, remembering Śiva as before. The chapter closes with the fruits of this narrative: it destroys sins, grants every desire, dispels every affliction born of desire, and increases understanding; whoever reads, recites, or hears it attains the supreme state, the reader who enters battle after reciting it is assured of victory, and it grants Brahminical knowledge to Brahmins, victory to Kṣatriyas, wealth to Vaiśyas, and happiness to Śūdras — bestowing devotion to Śambhu and a good end both in this world and the next.
