Chapter 25 · The Gods' Hymn of Praise to Śiva after Jālandhara's Slaying · Verses 1–37

Sanatkumāra relates that after Jālandhara's death, Brahmā and all the gods and sages, bowing low, praised the Lord of Lords with words dear to him. The gods declared him ever kind to those who seek refuge, a giver of happiness to the good and a remover of his devotees' sorrow — of wondrous sport, attainable only by devotion, hard to reach and hard for the wicked to propitiate, yet ever gracious to his own. Even the Veda, they said, does not truly know his greatness; great souls sing his glory each according to his own understanding, and even the thousand-mouthed serpent-lord and others forever sing his deeply hidden majesty, purifying their own speech thereby. By his grace the dull-witted become knowers of Brahman, and the Veda itself declares that he is ever attainable through devotion alone; compassionate to the humble and always all-pervading, he manifests himself through true devotion, changeless, the refuge of the good. The gods then recounted a long roll of devotees who, through devotion to him alone, had reached perfection: the Yadu king and devotee Dāśārha and his wife Kalāvatī; King Mitrasaha and his beloved Madayantī, who won the supreme, undivided state; Saumini, daughter of the lord of the Kaikeyas, who gained a happiness rare even for great yogis; King Vimarṣaṇa, who enjoyed many kinds of pleasure across seven lifetimes before reaching the true goal; King Candrasena, freed from sorrow and enjoying every pleasure here and hereafter; Śrīkara, a cowherd woman's son and disciple of Mahāvīra, who won supreme happiness in this world and liberation beyond; King Satyaratha, whose sorrow he removed, and Prince Dharmagupta, whom he made happy and carried across; the brahmin Śucivrata, made wealthy and wise by his grace at his mother's urging; King Citravarmā, who enjoyed pleasures rare even for the immortals before reaching liberation; Prince Candrāṅgada, who together with his wife Sīmantinī cast off all sorrow and attained the great goal; the brahmin named Mandara — a frequenter of a courtesan and the lowest of the wicked — who nonetheless worshipped Śiva with devotion and went to that same goal together with her; Prince Bhadrāyu, freed from affliction, who together with his mother reached the supreme state; a wicked man addicted to every woman's pleasure and to forbidden food, freed by mere service to the Lord; Śambara, ever wearing the ash of the cremation-ground, a great devotee of Śaṅkara, who by the rule of bearing that ash went to the Lord's own city with his wife; the son of Bhadrasena and a minister's son, both of righteous and auspicious conduct, always wearing rudrākṣa, freed by his grace after enjoying happiness here — the two of whom, in a former birth, had been a monkey and a cock likewise adorned with rudrākṣa; the two courtesans Piṅgalā and Mahānandā, who by devotion reached the true goal, O Lord who is ever intent on delivering his devotees; the brahmin's daughter Śāradā, widowed as a child, who by the power of devotion to him became blessed with a son and good fortune; and Binduga, a brahmin in name only and a frequenter of a courtesan, and his mistress, who upon merely hearing his glory attained the supreme goal. Thus, the gods said, many souls have reached perfection through devotion to him, O Lord of Lords, friend of the humble, abode of compassion — for he is the Brahman beyond Prakṛti and beyond Puruṣa, the supreme Lord, without qualities yet the support of the three guṇas, himself of the nature of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Hara, ever performing manifold actions though changeless and lord of all; and they, Brahmā and the rest, declared themselves his servants and his subjects, forever taking refuge in him, praying that he remain gracious and ever protect them. Having praised him thus, the gods and great sages fell silent, their minds fixed on Śiva's two feet. Then Śambhu, the great Lord, hearing their auspicious hymn, at once granted them excellent boons and vanished from that very place. All the gods, their enemy slain, rejoiced and returned to their own abodes, singing Śiva's true glory. This supreme account of Jālandhara's destruction, this sacred deed of the great Lord, destroys the mass of great sins; and this sacred hymn of the gods destroys all sin, ever grants every happiness, and delights the great Lord. Whoever reads or causes to be read these two accounts together shall enjoy the highest happiness here and thereafter attain the state of a lord of Gaṇas.
