Chapter 24 · The Slaying of Jālandhara · Verses 1–58

Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra to continue the wondrous tale and describe what happened next in the battle and how the demon was slain. Sanatkumāra relates that when Girijā had vanished from the battlefield and Jālandhara returned to fight, and the illusory vision had dissolved, the bull-bannered Śiva regained full awareness; seeing the māyā disappear, Śaṅkara grew exceedingly wrathful and, resorting to worldly behavior, went again to fight Jālandhara, who met him with a shower of arrows. Hara swiftly cut through that terrible arrow-net with his own arrows — unsurprising, since he is the destroyer of the three worlds. Then Jālandhara, seeing Rudra's astonishing valor, conjured by his māyā an illusion of Gaurī bound and weeping on a chariot, being struck by the demons Śumbha and Niśumbha; seeing this, even Śiva, showing a human response, became agitated, standing silent, his limbs slack and his mind dejected, forgetting his own might. Jālandhara then pierced Rudra with three arrows in the head, chest, and belly; but Rudra, the lord of great sport, instantly recognized the illusion for what it was and assumed his fierce form, blazing with garlands of flame, so terrible that the great demons — even the renowned heroes Śumbha and Niśumbha — could not stand before him and fled in all directions. At that moment Jālandhara's illusion vanished and a great cry arose across the battlefield; seeing the two demons flee, Rudra, enraged, cursed them: since they had turned their backs on his own battle, he would not slay them himself, but they would become fit to be slain by Gaurī. Jālandhara, hearing this, blazed with fury like fire and rained sharp arrows upon Rudra, darkening the earth; while Rudra cut through the arrows, Jālandhara struck the bull Nandī with an iron club, driving him from the field, and though restrained by Rudra the bull would not remain in the battle. Mahārudra then revealed to all his own unbearable radiance; growing supremely enraged and assuming his terrible form, he became like the fire of universal dissolution. Seeing the demon standing before him like the peak of Meru, and though he had heard of his invulnerability, Rudra — upholding Brahmā's word, the protector of the worlds, his heart still extending grace even as he resolved to slay him — grew wrathful and, with the toe of his foot, sportively fashioned in the great ocean waters a wondrous and terrible discus. Remembering that with it the three worlds could be destroyed, the enemy of the triple city, destroyer of Dakṣa's sacrifice and ender of Andhaka, laughingly told Jālandhara that the discus he had fashioned lay in the great waters, and that if he were strong enough to lift it out, he should stand and fight, and not otherwise. Hearing this, Jālandhara, his eyes blazing as though to burn all things, glared at Śaṅkara and, in a boastful speech, declared that he would cross every limit and slay Śiva together with his hosts and the gods, taking his own share as Garuḍa takes his; that he was able to destroy all moving and unmoving creation together with Indra, and that no being in the three worlds was safe from his arrows. He boasted that even in his boyhood he had conquered the mighty Lord through austerity alone, with sages and the foremost gods in attendance; that by his own power the three worlds, moving and unmoving, had been burnt in an instant; that Indra, Agni, Yama, Kubera, Vāyu, and Varuṇa could not endure him, as serpents cannot endure the scent of the lord of birds; that no mount could be found for him in heaven or on earth, so he subdued the lords of all the mountains he reached, striking even Mandara, Nīla, and Meru with the staff of his arm as though merely to scratch an itch; that for sport he had dammed the Gaṅgā with his two arms upon the Himālaya, and that his own servants had won victory over the gods, his enemies; that he had seized and bound shut the mouth of the submarine fire Vaḍavā, turning the whole ocean instantly into a single expanse of water; that Airāvata and the other elephants had been cast into the sea and Indra himself, with his chariot, hurled a hundred yojanas away; that he had bound even Garuḍa and Viṣṇu with a serpent-noose, and had carried off Urvaśī and other women into captivity; and that Rudra did not know him — Jālandhara, the great demon, son of the ocean, conqueror of the three worlds, of immense strength. Having spoken thus to Mahādeva, the ocean's son neither flinched nor recalled the many demons already slain in that war; arrogant and unrestrained, he clapped his mighty arms together and insulted Mahādeva with bitter words. Hearing this inauspicious speech, Mahādeva laughed aloud, yet grew supremely wrathful; he took up in his hand the discus named Sudarśana, fashioned by the toe of his foot, resolved to slay him, and hurled it — radiant as ten million suns, like the fire of universal dissolution. Blazing across heaven and earth, it reached Jālandhara and swiftly severed his great, wide-eyed head; his body fell from the chariot to the ground, making the earth resound, and at the fall of the ocean's son's head a great cry of lamentation arose. His body split in two like a mountain of collyrium cleft by the thunderbolt in the ocean; the world became filled with his terrible blood, and the whole earth was disfigured. By Rudra's command, all his blood and flesh, reaching the great Raurava, became a pool of blood there; and his radiance, issuing from his body, merged into dissolution in Rudra — just as the radiance born from Vṛndā's body had merged into Gaurī. Seeing Jālandhara slain, the gods, gandharvas, and serpents rejoiced greatly and cried out in praise; all the gods, siddhas, and great sages, showering flowers, sang his glory aloud; the celestial women, overcome with joy and love, danced and sang melodious songs together with the kinnaras. All the directions grew calm and clear at the slaying of Vṛndā's husband, and the threefold winds blew pure and pleasant; the moon grew cool, the sun blazed with fine radiance, the fires burned tranquilly, and the sky became unclouded. Thus, when that son of the ocean was slain by Hari of infinite form, the whole of the three worlds attained the utmost well-being.
