Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra, all-knowing and foremost among speakers, what Hari did in Jālandhara's city and how Vṛndā came to abandon her chastity. Sanatkumāra relates that Viṣṇu went to Puṭabhedana, Jālandhara's city, resolved on breaking Vṛndā's fidelity; the foremost of illusion-wielders showed Vṛndā a dream while he himself, in a wondrous form, took up residence in the city's garden. That night, by the power of Hari's māyā, the devoted Vṛndā saw a terrible dream: her husband mounted on a buffalo, smeared with oil, naked, adorned with dark flowers, attended by flesh-eating spirits, his head shaven, going toward the south, wrapped in darkness; she saw her own city sink into the ocean along with herself. Waking and brooding over the dream, she saw the rising sun again and again as though riddled with holes and without brilliance. Knowing this to be inauspicious, weeping and overwhelmed with fear, she found peace nowhere — not on the gate-towers, not in the pleasure-garden she went to with two companions. Despondent and agitated, Jālandhara's wife wandered from forest to forest, scarcely aware of herself, until she saw two hideous, lion-faced rākṣasas with gleaming teeth; fleeing from them in terror, she came upon a tranquil ascetic seated in silence with his disciple, threw her arm about his neck, and begged his protection. The sage, seeing her pursued, drove the two rākṣasas off at once with a mere roar; astonished, Vṛndā prostrated herself before him and asked after her husband, who had gone to fight Rudra. Hearing this, the sage — Viṣṇu in disguise, skilled in method and bent on his own purpose — feigned silence and looked compassionately skyward; at once two monkey-lords appeared, were dispatched by a glance of his brow, and returned within moments bearing Jālandhara's severed head, trunk, and arms. Seeing these, Vṛndā fell to the ground unconscious with grief, then lamented that the conqueror of the three worlds, who had once subdued the gods and Viṣṇu himself, should now be slain by a mere ascetic; she recalled how she had once told Jālandhara that Śiva alone is the supreme Brahman, a truth he, grown proud and swayed by bad company, had refused to accept. Composing herself, she begged the sage to restore her husband to life. The sage replied that one slain by Rudra in battle can never be revived, but that, honoring the eternal law that a refugee must be protected, he would revive him nonetheless. Having said this, Viṣṇu, disguised as the sage, restored Jālandhara to life and vanished; the revived demon rose, embraced Vṛndā, and kissed her, and she, her grief dissolved like a dream, dwelt happily with him in the forest for many days. Once, at the close of their love-making, Vṛndā recognized him as Viṣṇu himself, and, filled with fury, rebuked him for the conduct of one who violates another's wife, declaring that she now knew him fully for the deceiver he was beneath his ascetic disguise. In her wrath she cursed Keśava: that the two beings he had shown her in illusion would themselves become rākṣasas and carry off his own wife, and that he himself, grieving for his wife, aided by monkeys, would wander the forest together with the lord of serpents who had become his disciple. Having pronounced this curse, Vṛndā entered the sacrificial fire, her mind fixed on her husband even as Viṣṇu tried to restrain her. At that moment Brahmā and all the gods, with their wives, gathered in the sky to witness her passage to the highest state; her great radiance, watched by all the gods, swiftly vanished from sight and merged into the body of Śivā (Pārvatī), while the ranks of the immortals raised cries of victory. Thus Vṛndā, great queen and most excellent daughter of Kālanemi, attained supreme liberation through the power of her chastity. Thereafter Hari, remembering her again and again, smeared himself with the ash of her funeral pyre and remained fixed there; though the hosts of gods and siddhas sought to comfort him, he found no peace.

जलन्धरो हि मद्भर्त्ता (jalandharo hi madbharttā) — "Jālandhara, my husband,रुद्रं योद्धुं गतः प्रभो (rudraṃ yoddhuṃ gataḥ prabho) — O lord, has gone to fight Rudra;स तत्रास्ते कथं युद्धे (sa tatrāste kathaṃ yuddhe) — how does he fare there in that battle —तन्मे कथय सुव्रत (tanme kathaya suvrata) — tell me this, O virtuous one"

Having gone, and returning within half a moment, they again stood before him, O lord of sages, bearing that very Jālandhara's head, headless trunk, and two hands.

Seeing that head, headless trunk, and those two hands of the ocean's son [Jālandhara], she, stricken with grief at her husband's calamity, fell to the ground unconscious.

O lord, you who used to delight me before with pleasant words — why do you not speak today to me, your innocent beloved?
यः पुरा सुखसंवादैः (yaḥ purā sukhasaṃvādaiḥ) — "you who, before, with pleasant words,विनोदयसि मां प्रभो (vinodayasi māṃ prabho) — O lord, used to delight me —स कथं न वदस्यद्य (sa kathaṃ na vadasyadya) — why do you not speak todayवल्लभां मामनागसम् (vallabhāṃ māmanāgasam) — to me, your innocent beloved?"

He by whom the gods, together with the gandharvas and with Viṣṇu, were once conquered — how has that conqueror of the three worlds today been slain by a mere ascetic?
येन देवाः सगन्धर्वा (yena devāḥ sagandharvā) — "he by whom the gods, with the gandharvas,निर्जिता विष्णुना सह (nirjitā viṣṇunā saha) — and together with Viṣṇu, were conquered —कथं स तापसेनाद्य (kathaṃ sa tāpasenādya) — how has he today, by a mere ascetic,त्रैलोक्यविजयी हतः (trailokyavijayī hataḥ) — the conqueror of the three worlds, been slain?"

O best of demons, my words — that Śiva alone is the supreme Brahman — were not accepted by you, who did not know Rudra's true nature, even as I spoke them.
नाङ्गीकृतं हि मे वाक्यं (nāṅgīkṛtaṃ hi me vākyaṃ) — "O best of demons, my words were not acceptedरुद्रतत्त्वमजानता (rudratattvamajānatā) — by you, who did not know Rudra's true nature,परं ब्रह्म शिवश्चेति (paraṃ brahma śivaśceti) — even as I spoke that Śiva is the supreme Brahman,वदन्त्या दैत्यसत्तम (vadantyā daityasattama) — O foremost of demons"

By the power of your devoted service I had truly known you — yet, overcome by pride and given over to the sway of bad company, you never heeded me.
ततस्त्वं हि मया ज्ञातः (tatastvaṃ hi mayā jñātaḥ) — "then I had truly known you,तव सेवाप्रभावतः (tava sevāprabhāvataḥ) — through the power of your devoted service;गर्वितेन त्वया नैव (garvitena tvayā naiva) — yet, grown proud, you never [heeded me],कुसङ्गवशगेन हि (kusaṅgavaśagena hi) — given over to the sway of bad company"

Having spoken thus at length, that beloved wife, steadfast in her own dharma, lamented piteously, her heart consumed with anguish.
इत्थं प्रभाष्य बहुधा (itthaṃ prabhāṣya bahudhā) — "having spoken thus at length,स्वधर्मस्था च तत्प्रिया (svadharmasthā ca tatpriyā) — that beloved wife, steadfast in her own dharma,विललाप विचित्रं सा (vilalāpa vicitraṃ sā) — lamented piteously,हृदयेन विदूयता (hṛdayena vidūyatā) — her heart consumed with anguish"

Doubtful readingThe verse number "45" is glued directly onto the final word here with no space or daṇḍa before it — reproduced in the sanskrit field exactly as printed, with the expected daṇḍa understood. "सर्पेश्वर" ("lord of serpents") is left untranslated as a description rather than resolved to a specific name, since he is not named explicitly here.

Having said this, Vṛndā then entered the fire, her mind fixed and devoted to her husband there, even though restrained by Viṣṇu.
इत्युक्त्वा सा तदा वृन्दा (ityuktvā sā tadā vṛndā) — "having said this, Vṛndā thenप्रविशद्धव्यवाहनम् (praviśaddhavyavāhanam) — entered the fire,विष्णुना वार्यमाणापि (viṣṇunā vāryamāṇāpi) — even though restrained by Viṣṇu,तत्स्थितासक्तचेतसा (tatsthitāsaktacetasā) — her mind fixed and devoted there [to her husband]"
tasminnavasare devā brahmādyā nikhilā mune | āgatāḥ khe samaṃ dāraiḥ sadgatiṃ vai didṛkṣavaḥ 47 ||
At that moment, O sage, all the gods, headed by Brahmā, came into the sky together with their wives, wishing to behold her attainment of the supreme destiny.
तस्मिन्नवसरे देवा (tasminnavasare devā) — "at that moment the gods,ब्रह्माद्या निखिला मुने (brahmādyā nikhilā mune) — headed by Brahmā, all of them, O sage,आगताः खे समं दारैः (āgatāḥ khe samaṃ dāraiḥ) — came into the sky together with their wives,सद्गतिं वै दिदृक्षवः (sadgatiṃ vai didṛkṣavaḥ) — wishing to behold her supreme destiny"
atha daityendrapatnyāstu tajjyotiḥ paramaṃ mahat | paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāmalokamagamaddrutam 48 ||
Then that supreme and mighty radiance of the demon-lord's wife, while all the gods looked on, swiftly passed beyond sight.
अथ दैत्येन्द्रपत्न्यास्तु (atha daityendrapatnyāstu) — "then that radiance of the demon-lord's wife,तज्ज्योतिः परमं महत् (tajjyotiḥ paramaṃ mahat) — supreme and mighty,पश्यतां सर्वदेवानाम् (paśyatāṃ sarvadevānām) — while all the gods looked on,अलोकमगमद्द्रुतम् (alokamagamaddrutam) — swiftly passed beyond sight"

śivātanau vilīnaṃ tadvṛndātejo babhūva ha | āsījjayajayārāvaḥ khasthitāmarapaṅktiṣu 49 ||
That radiance of Vṛndā became merged into the body of Śivā [Pārvatī]; and among the ranks of immortals stationed in the sky there arose cries of "Victory, victory!"

evaṃ vṛndā mahārājñī kālanemisutottamā | pātivratyaprabhāvācca muktiṃ prāpa parāṃ mune 50 ||
Thus Vṛndā, the great queen, most excellent daughter of Kālanemi, attained, by the power of her chastity, O sage, the supreme liberation.
एवं वृन्दा महाराज्ञी (evaṃ vṛndā mahārājñī) — "thus Vṛndā, the great queen,कालनेमिसुतोत्तमा (kālanemisutottamā) — most excellent daughter of Kālanemi,पातिव्रत्यप्रभावाच्च (pātivratyaprabhāvācca) — by the power of her chastity,मुक्तिं प्राप परां मुने (muktiṃ prāpa parāṃ mune) — attained supreme liberation, O sage"

Thereafter Hari, remembering her again and again, covered himself with the ash-dust of Vṛndā's funeral pyre and remained there itself; though the hosts of gods and siddhas sought to console him, he found no peace.
