Chapter 22 · The Battle with Jālandhara · Verses 1–52

Sanatkumāra continues: Rudra, in his terrible form and mounted on his bull, advances into battle as though laughing, and his gaṇas who had earlier fled return with lion-roars to strike down the demons with arrows; all the daityas flee in terror at the sight of him, as sins flee before a devotee of Śiva. Jālandhara alone charges at Caṇḍīśa with thousands of arrows, and is followed by Śumbha, Niśumbha, Kālanemi, Khaḍgaromā, Balāhaka, Ghasmara, Pracaṇḍa, and countless other demon-lords, who cover Rudra's gaṇas in a darkness of arrows and hack their limbs. Hara cuts through that net of arrows, blankets the sky with his own, fells the demons in floods, beheads Khaḍgaromā with his axe, splits Balāhaka's skull with his khaṭvāṅga, binds and fells Ghasmara with his noose, and cleaves Pracaṇḍa with his trident, until the demons cannot stand, like elephants harried by a lion. Enraged at this, Jālandhara reproaches his fleeing warriors — mocking the shame of being struck from behind, extolling death faced in battle as the giver of every desire, of fame, and even of liberation, comparable to the passing of the highest renunciate through the sun's orb, and urging them to cast off the fear of death, which is in any case unavoidable and inborn with the body, and to fight on with joy for the bliss it secures in this world and the next. His warriors, though repeatedly exhorted, cannot master their fear and flee regardless; enraged at his own army's rout, Jālandhara himself challenges Rudra to single combat with a voice like a thunderclap, taunting him to show whatever strength he has instead of destroying lesser gaṇas. He looses seventy arrows at the bull-bannered Śambhu, who cuts them down still short of him and, laughing, severs Jālandhara's horses, banner, parasol, and bow with seven more; undaunted though his chariot is destroyed, the demon rushes at Śiva with an upraised mace, which the Lord splits in two, and then attacks bare-fisted, only to be driven back a full krośa by a flood of Śiva's arrows. Realizing Rudra's superior strength, Jālandhara conjures a wondrous gāndharva illusion: hosts of gandharvas and apsarases appear, singing, dancing, and playing cymbals, flute, and drum, and Rudra and his gaṇas are utterly enchanted, so absorbed that they do not even notice their weapons slipping from their hands. Seeing Rudra thus distracted, Jālandhara hurries, driven by lust, to where Gaurī stands; assuming Rudra's own ten-armed, five-faced, three-eyed, matted-locked, bull-mounted form through his demonic māyā, he leaves Śumbha and Niśumbha to hold the battle and presents himself before her. Pārvatī comes forward from among her companions to meet the approaching figure, but the instant the lustful demon beholds her loveliness, he loses his seed and his limbs go numb; recognizing him for what he is, Gaurī vanishes in terror to the lake Uttaramānasa, and the demon, no longer seeing her, rushes back to resume the fight with the real Śiva. Pārvatī, meanwhile, calls Mahāviṣṇu to mind and finds him seated beside her; she tells him of Jālandhara's astonishing outrage and asks whether it is not known to him, and Viṣṇu, bowing to her with joined palms, replies that by her grace he already knows, and that he stands ready to act on whatever she commands. Pārvatī, instructing him in the true way of righteousness, bids him follow the very path Jālandhara has shown — to go, by her command, and break the chastity of Jālandhara's wife Vṛndā, since the demon cannot otherwise be slain, there being no dharma on earth equal to a wife's fidelity to her husband. Hearing and accepting this charge, Hari sets off at once, once more, to the city of Jālandhara, intent on working his deception.
