Chapter 21 · The Special Battle · Verses 1–56

Sanatkumāra continues: seeing the gaṇa-lords Nandin, Gaṇeśa (elephant-faced) and Kārtikeya (six-faced) arrayed before them, the demons rush forward in fury for single combat — Kālanemi against Nandin, Śumbha against Gaṇeśa, and the wary Niśumbha against Kārtikeya. Niśumbha wounds Kārtikeya's peacock-mount; Kārtikeya retaliates by wrecking Niśumbha's chariot, and the two roar and grapple until Niśumbha's spear fells Kārtikeya. Nandin and Kālanemi likewise trade blows — bows cut, chariots smashed — until Kālanemi, his heart pierced by Nandin's trident, uproots a mountain peak and strikes him down. Gaṇeśa and Śumbha duel on their mouse- and chariot-mounts; Gaṇeśa slays Śumbha but is himself wounded and dismounted, fighting briefly on foot before remounting, only for Kālanemi and Niśumbha to overwhelm him together. Seeing Gaṇeśa hard-pressed, the mighty Vīrabhadra charges to his aid with a host of bhūtas, Kūṣmāṇḍas, Bhairavas, Vetālas, Yoginīs, Piśācas and Ḍākinīs, whose war-cries and ḍamaru-beats shake the earth as the bhūtas devour and trample the demons. Nandin and Kārtikeya, reviving, rejoin the fray and cut down demons without pause, scattering Jālandhara's dispirited army — its generals Śumbha, Niśumbha and the great Kālanemi all defeated. Seeing his forces routed, Jālandhara himself advances on a high-bannered chariot; his defeated demons, heartened by his approach, rally and roar again, matched by the triumphant gaṇas. Amid the tumult of elephants, horses, chariots, conches and lion-roars, Jālandhara's arrow-storms blot out the sky like mist; he wounds Nandin, Gaṇeśa and Vīrabhadra, until Kārtikeya strikes him down with his spear — Jālandhara falls but rises at once and clubs Kārtikeya to the ground with his mace, a blow Kārtikeya, by Brahmā's boon, lets fell him harmlessly; Nandin too is felled by the mace, until Gaṇeśa, remembering Śiva's feet, rushes in and severs the demon's mace with his axe. Vīrabhadra cuts down Jālandhara's horses, banner, bow and parasol; enraged, Jālandhara fells Gaṇeśa with his spear and mounts a fresh chariot to attack Vīrabhadra directly. The two, radiant as suns, duel long with many weapons; Vīrabhadra destroys Jālandhara's chariot-team, until the demon-king, seizing his iron mace (parigha), leaps down and strikes Vīrabhadra's head, splitting it open and felling him in a pool of blood. Seeing Vīrabhadra fallen, Rudra's gaṇas flee the field in terror, crying out to Maheśvara. Hearing their commotion, Candraśekhara asks his attendant heroes its cause, vowing to restore peace; even as he questions them, the routed gaṇas arrive before him in distress, and Rudra, the great worker of wonders, hears their full account and grants them fearlessness, reviving their courage.

samarāyodyataścābhūtpunargajamukho vibhuḥ | prahasya jaghnatuḥ krodhāttotreṇaiva mahādvipam 18 ||

Doubtful readingThe text preserves the plural/dual verb "jaghnatuḥ" against a singular subject "gajamukho vibhuḥ" — likely a metrical/scribal irregularity common in this text (compare the similar looseness noted in adjacent chapters). Rendered as Gaṇeśa alone striking Śumbha, with "toteṇaiva mahādvipam" as a simile ("as with a goad upon a great elephant") rather than a second literal blow.

The elephant-faced lord [Gaṇeśa] again stood ready for battle, and laughing in fury, struck him — as a goad strikes a great elephant.
