Chapter Twenty · The General Battle Between the Gaṇas and the Asuras · Verses 1–62

Vyāsa asks Sanatkumāra where Rāhu went after being released by Kīrtimukha. Sanatkumāra recounts that Rāhu was released at a place thenceforth known as Varvara, and that Rāhu, humbled, went to Jālandhara's city and reported everything Śiva had done. Enraged, Jālandhara orders his entire army — led by Kālanemi, Śumbha, Niśumbha, and hosts of demon clans such as the Kambus, Daurhṛdas, Kālakas, Kālakeyas, Mauryas and Dhaumras — to march forth, and sets out himself at their head amid ill omens: Śukra and the ever severed-headed Rāhu go before him, his crown suddenly falls, and the sky darkens as with monsoon clouds. Seeing this, the gods flee unseen to Kailāsa and, prostrating before Śiva, lament that they have been driven from their abodes and that Viṣṇu — whom Śiva once appointed their protector — now lives subject to Jālandhara in his own house together with Lakṣmī; they beg Śiva to slay Jālandhara without delay. Śiva summons Viṣṇu and questions him; Viṣṇu explains that, since Jālandhara sprang from a portion of Śiva himself and is Lakṣmī's brother, he could not bring himself to kill him despite prolonged warfare, and that, pleased with Jālandhara's valor, he had granted him the boon of dwelling in his house — hence his own departure there. Śiva laughingly reassures Viṣṇu that he himself will slay Jālandhara without doubt, and sends Viṣṇu and the gods back to their own realms, certain of the demon's death. Meanwhile Jālandhara besieges Kailāsa with his vast army, roaring like Death itself; hearing the tumult, Śiva grows furious and commands his gaṇas, led by Nandin, the elephant-faced Gaṇeśa, and Kārtikeya, to descend for battle. A fierce battle breaks out in the foothills of Kailāsa: drums and conches resound, the sky fills with a storm of weapons, and the earth grows impassable with the flesh, blood and fat of the slain on both sides. Whenever the Pramathas (gaṇas) kill demons, Śukrācārya revives them again and again with the Mṛtasañjīvanī spell, until the distressed gaṇas report this to Śiva. Enraged, Rudra produces from his own face a terrifying kṛtyā — palm-thighed, cave-mouthed, tree-crushing — who rampages through the battlefield devouring demons, then seizes Śukra, hides him within herself, and vanishes into the sky. Deprived of Śukra's power to revive the dead, the demon army's morale collapses and it breaks and flees like windblown straw; enraged at this, the generals Śumbha, Niśumbha and Kālanemi rally and check the gaṇas' onslaught with storms of arrows, wounding many gaṇas grievously — until Nandin, Lambodara (Gaṇeśa) and Kārtikeya, seeing their own forces routed, press forward in haste and anger to hold back the foremost demons.
