इदानीं ब्रूहि सुप्रीत्या (idānīṃ brūhi suprītyā) — "now tell me gladly,"now tell me gladly,·कृपां कृत्वा ममोपरि (kṛpāṃ kṛtvā mamopari) — showing compassion upon me,showing compassion upon me,·राहुर्मुक्तः कुत्र गतः (rāhurmuktaḥ kutra gataḥ) — where did the freed Rāhu go,where did the freed Rāhu go,·पुरुषेण महामुने (puruṣeṇa mahāmune) — O great sage — [freed] by that being"O great sage — [freed] by that being"

इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्य (ityākarṇya vacastasya) — "hearing these words of his,"hearing these words of his,·व्यासस्यामितमेधसः (vyāsasyāmitamedhasaḥ) — of Vyāsa, of boundless intellect,of Vyāsa, of boundless intellect,·प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नात्मा (pratyuvāca prasannātmā) — glad at heart, repliedglad at heart, replied·ब्रह्मपुत्रो महामुनिः (brahmaputro mahāmuniḥ) — the great sage, son of Brahmā"the great sage, son of Brahmā"

राहुर्विमुक्तो यस्तेन (rāhurvimukto yastena) — "Rāhu, released by him,"Rāhu, released by him,·सोऽपि तद्वर्वरस्थले (so'pi tadvarvarasthale) — was set free at that place called Varvara;was set free at that place called Varvara;·अतः स वर्वरो भूत (ataḥ sa varvaro bhūta) — therefore it became [known as] Varvara,therefore it became [known as] Varvara,·इति भूमौ प्रथां गतः (iti bhūmau prathāṃ gataḥ) — and so gained renown on earth"and so gained renown on earth"

कोटिर्वीरकुलोत्पन्नाः (koṭirvīrakulotpannāḥ) — "a crore born of heroic lineages,"a crore born of heroic lineages,·कम्बुवंश्याश्च दौर्हृदाः (kambuvaṃśyāśca daurhṛdāḥ) — of the Kambu clan, and the Daurhṛdas,of the Kambu clan, and the Daurhṛdas,·कालकाः कालकेयाश्च (kālakāḥ kālakeyāśca) — the Kālakas and the Kālakeyas,the Kālakas and the Kālakeyas,·मौर्या धौम्रास्तथैव च (mauryā dhaumrāstathaiva ca) — the Mauryas, and likewise the Dhaumras"the Mauryas, and likewise the Dhaumras"

इत्याज्ञाप्यासुरपतिः (ityājñāpyāsurapatiḥ) — "having thus commanded, the lord of demons,"having thus commanded, the lord of demons,·सिन्धुपुत्रः प्रतापवान् (sindhuputraḥ pratāpavān) — the glorious son of the Ocean,the glorious son of the Ocean,·निर्जगामाशु दैत्यानां (nirjagāmāśu daityānāṃ) — went forth at once, of the demonswent forth at once, of the demons·कोटिभिः परिवारितः (koṭibhiḥ parivāritaḥ) — surrounded by crores"surrounded by crores"

न जानासि कथं स्वामिन् (na jānāsi kathaṃ svāmin) — "how do you not know, O Master,"how do you not know, O Master,·देवापत्तिमिमां प्रभो (devāpattimimāṃ prabho) — of this calamity of the gods, O Lord?of this calamity of the gods, O Lord?·तस्मान्नो रक्षणार्थाय (tasmānno rakṣaṇārthāya) — therefore, for our protection,therefore, for our protection,·जहि सागरनन्दनम् (jahi sāgaranandanam) — slay the son of the Ocean"slay the son of the Ocean"

अस्माकं रक्षणार्थाय (asmākaṃ rakṣaṇārthāya) — "for our protection,"for our protection,·यत्पूर्वं गरुडध्वजः (yatpūrvaṃ garuḍadhvajaḥ) — he whom formerly the Garuḍa-bannered one,he whom formerly the Garuḍa-bannered one,·नियोजितस्त्वया नाथ (niyojitastvayā nātha) — was appointed by you, O Lord —was appointed by you, O Lord —·न क्षमः सोऽद्य रक्षितुम् (na kṣamaḥ so'dya rakṣitum) — he today is unable to protect us"he today is unable to protect us"

तदधीनो गृहे तस्य (tadadhīno gṛhe tasya) — "subject to him, in his house,"subject to him, in his house,·रमया सह तिष्ठति (ramayā saha tiṣṭhati) — he dwells together with Ramā;he dwells together with Ramā;·वयं च तत्र तिष्ठामः (vayaṃ ca tatra tiṣṭhāmaḥ) — and we too dwell there,and we too dwell there,·तदाज्ञावशगाः सुराः (tadājñāvaśagāḥ surāḥ) — we gods, subject to his command"we gods, subject to his command"

अलक्षिता वयं चात्रागताः (alakṣitā vayaṃ cātrāgatāḥ) — "unseen, we have come here"unseen, we have come here·शम्भो त्वदन्तिकम् (śambho tvadantikam) — into your presence, O Śambhu;into your presence, O Śambhu;·स आयाति त्वया कर्त्तुं (sa āyāti tvayā karttuṃ) — he is coming, with you to wagehe is coming, with you to wage·रणं सिन्धुसुतो बली (raṇaṃ sindhusuto balī) — battle — that mighty son of the Ocean"battle — that mighty son of the Ocean"

अतः स्वामिन् रणे त्वं (ataḥ svāmin raṇe tvaṃ) — "therefore, O Master, in battle you"therefore, O Master, in battle you·तमविलम्बं जलन्धरम् (tamavilambaṃ jalandharam) — ought to slay that Jālandharaought to slay that Jālandhara·हन्तुमर्हसि सर्वज्ञ (hantumarhasi sarvajña) — without delay, O all-knowing one;without delay, O all-knowing one;·पाहि नः शरणागतान् (pāhi naḥ śaraṇāgatān) — protect us who have taken refuge"protect us who have taken refuge"

हृषीकेश महाविष्णो (hṛṣīkeśa mahāviṣṇo) — "O Hṛṣīkeśa, great Viṣṇu,"O Hṛṣīkeśa, great Viṣṇu,·देवाश्चात्र समागताः (devāścātra samāgatāḥ) — the gods have gathered here,the gods have gathered here,·जलन्धरकृतापीडाः (jalandharakṛtāpīḍāḥ) — afflicted by what Jālandhara has done,afflicted by what Jālandhara has done,·शरणं मेऽतिविह्वलाः (śaraṇaṃ me'tivihvalāḥ) — utterly overwhelmed, seeking refuge in me"utterly overwhelmed, seeking refuge in me"

जलन्धरः कथं विष्णो (jalandharaḥ kathaṃ viṣṇo) — "why, O Viṣṇu, was Jālandhara"why, O Viṣṇu, was Jālandhara·सङ्गरे न हतस्त्वया (saṅgare na hatastvayā) — not slain by you in battle?not slain by you in battle?·तद् गृहं चापि यातोऽसि (tad gṛhaṃ cāpi yāto'si) — and why have you gone to his house,and why have you gone to his house,·त्यक्त्वा वैकुण्ठमात्मनः (tyaktvā vaikuṇṭhamātmanaḥ) — forsaking your own Vaikuṇṭha?"forsaking your own Vaikuṇṭha?"

मया नियोजितस्त्वं हि (mayā niyojitastvaṃ hi) — "it was I who appointed you,"it was I who appointed you,·साधुसंरक्षणाय च (sādhusaṃrakṣaṇāya ca) — for the protection of the virtuousfor the protection of the virtuous·निग्रहाय खलानां च (nigrahāya khalānāṃ ca) — and for the restraint of the wicked,and for the restraint of the wicked,·स्वतन्त्रेण विहारिणा (svatantreṇa vihāriṇā) — I who move freely and independently"I who move freely and independently"

तवांशसम्भवत्वाच्च (tavāṃśasambhavatvācca) — "because he arose from a portion of you,"because he arose from a portion of you,·भ्रातृत्वाच्च तथा श्रियः (bhrātṛtvācca tathā śriyaḥ) — and because he is the brother of Śrī,and because he is the brother of Śrī,·मया न निहतः सङ्ख्ये (mayā na nihataḥ saṅkhye) — he was not slain in battle by me;he was not slain in battle by me;·त्वमेनं जहि दानवम् (tvamenaṃ jahi dānavam) — slay this demon yourself"slay this demon yourself"

महाबलो महावीरो (mahābalo mahāvīro) — "of great strength, a great hero,"of great strength, a great hero,·ऽजेयस्सर्वदिवौकसाम् ('jeyassarvadivaukasām) — unconquerable by all the dwellers of heaven,unconquerable by all the dwellers of heaven,·अन्येषां चापि देवेश (anyeṣāṃ cāpi deveśa) — and by others too, O lord of gods —and by others too, O lord of gods —·सत्यमेतद् ब्रवीम्यहम् (satyametad bravīmyaham) — this I speak truly"this I speak truly"

मद्भगिन्या मया सार्द्धं (madbhaginyā mayā sārddhaṃ) — "together with my sister and me,"together with my sister and me,·मद्गेहे ससुरो वस (madgehe sasuro vasa) — dwell in my house with the gods,dwell in my house with the gods,·मदधीनो महाविष्णो (madadhīno mahāviṣṇo) — O great Viṣṇu, subject to me —O great Viṣṇu, subject to me —·इत्यहं तद्गृहं गतः (ityahaṃ tadgṛhaṃ gataḥ) — thus [he said], and I went to his house"thus [he said], and I went to his house"

स्वस्थानं गच्छ निर्भीतो (svasthānaṃ gaccha nirbhīto) — "go fearlessly to your own abode;"go fearlessly to your own abode;·देवा गच्छन्त्वपि ध्रुवम् (devā gacchantvapi dhruvam) — let the gods too surely go,let the gods too surely go,·निर्भया वीतसन्देहा (nirbhayā vītasandehā) — fearless and free of doubt,fearless and free of doubt,·हतं मत्वाऽसुराधिपम् (hataṃ matvā'surādhipam) — considering the lord of demons slain"considering the lord of demons slain"

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे व्यास (etasminnantare vyāsa) — "meanwhile, O Vyāsa,"meanwhile, O Vyāsa,·स दैत्येन्द्रोऽतिविक्रमः (sa daityendro'tivikramaḥ) — that lord of demons, of boundless prowess,that lord of demons, of boundless prowess,·सन्नद्धैरसुरैस्सार्द्धं (sannaddhairasuraissārddhaṃ) — together with his armed demons,together with his armed demons,·शैलप्रान्तं ययौ बली (śailaprāntaṃ yayau balī) — that mighty one went to the edge of the mountain"that mighty one went to the edge of the mountain"

कैलासमवरुध्याथ (kailāsamavarudhyātha) — "then, having besieged Kailāsa,"then, having besieged Kailāsa,·महत्या सेनया युतः (mahatyā senayā yutaḥ) — accompanied by a vast army,accompanied by a vast army,·सन्तस्थौ कालसङ्काशः (santasthau kālasaṅkāśaḥ) — he stood there, resembling Time itself,he stood there, resembling Time itself,·कुर्वन्सिंहरवं महान् (kurvansiṃharavaṃ mahān) — making a great lion-roar"making a great lion-roar"

नन्दीभमुखसेनानी- (nandībhamukhasenānī-) — "[the gaṇas] with their commanders"[the gaṇas] with their commanders·मुखास्सर्वे शिवाज्ञया (mukhāssarve śivājñayā) — headed by Nandin and the elephant-faced one, by Śiva's command,headed by Nandin and the elephant-faced one, by Śiva's command,·गणाश्च समनह्यन्त (gaṇāśca samanahyanta) — and all the gaṇas armed themselves,and all the gaṇas armed themselves,·युद्धायातित्वरान्विताः (yuddhāyātitvarānvitāḥ) — filled with great haste for battle"filled with great haste for battle"

अवतेरुर्गणाः सर्वे (avaterurgaṇāḥ sarve) — "all the gaṇas descended,"all the gaṇas descended,·कैलासात्क्रोधदुर्मदाः (kailāsātkrodhadurmadāḥ) — from Kailāsa, maddened with rage,from Kailāsa, maddened with rage,·वल्गन्तो रणशब्दांश्च (valganto raṇaśabdāṃśca) — bounding, and roaring war-cries,bounding, and roaring war-cries,·महावीरा रणाय हि (mahāvīrā raṇāya hi) — those great heroes, for battle indeed"those great heroes, for battle indeed"

भेरीमृदङ्गशङ्खौघैर् (bherīmṛdaṅgaśaṅkhaughair) — "with multitudes of kettle-drums, mṛdaṅgas and conches,"with multitudes of kettle-drums, mṛdaṅgas and conches,·निःस्वानैर्वीरहर्षणैः (niḥsvānairvīraharṣaṇaiḥ) — with sounds that gladdened the heroes,with sounds that gladdened the heroes,·गजाश्वरथशब्दैश्च (gajāśvarathaśabdaiśca) — and with the noise of elephants, horses and chariots,and with the noise of elephants, horses and chariots,·नादिता भूर्व्यकम्पत (nāditā bhūrvyakampata) — the resounding earth trembled"the resounding earth trembled"
